India Summons Swiss Envoy over 'Anti-India Posters' in Geneva

  • India summoned the Swiss ambassador and lodged a protest over the issue of malicious anti-India posters in front of the UN building in Geneva.
  • The Swiss ambassador conveyed to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) that he would convey India's concerns to Berne with all the seriousness it deserves.
  • Several posters alleging harassment of minorities and women were put up at a square outside the UN building in Geneva coinciding with a session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
  • The envoy said that the posters in Geneva are part of the space provided to all, but in no way endorse the claims, nor reflect the position of the Swiss government.
  • It is learnt that similar posters were put up in the past as well during sessions of the UNHRC.

India Scores 74.4 in World Bank Index on Life Cycle of Working Women

  • The laws affecting the Indian working woman's pay and pension do not provide for equality with Indian men, dragging India's score in a World Bank index on the life cycle of a working woman down to 74.4 out of a possible 100.
  • A score of 100 on the Index means that women are on an equal standing with men on all the eight indicators being measured, according to the World Bank's Women, Business and the Law 2023 report. India scored higher than the 63.7 average for the South Asian region, though lower than Nepal which had the region's highest score of 80.6. Out of the 190 economies covered in the Index, only 14 scored a perfect 100: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Luxemburg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
  • For India, the Index used data on the laws and regulations applicable in Mumbai, viewed as the country's main business city.

Iran Claims to Have Unearthed Massive Lithium Deposit

  • As per a senior official in the Iranian Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade (MIMT), a deposit located in the western province of Hamedan, Iran contains some 8.5 million metric tons of lithium ore.
  • According to Ebrahimali Molabeigi, who leads MIMT's exploration department, the discovery was made in western province of Hamedan and more such lithium ore deposits are expected to be discovered soon.
  • If true, this discovery would be a major boost for Iran, whose economy has suffered under US sanctions and embargoes for decades.
  • According to the US Geological Survey, the world's largest identified lithium resources (not counting Iran) are as follows: Bolivia, 21 million tons; Argentina, 20 million tons; Chile, 11 million tons; Australia, 7.9 million tons; China, 6.8 million tons. India 5.9 million tons in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Tata Steel Mining Signs MoU with GAIL to Get Clean Fuel

  • In order to reduce carbon footprint in its operations, Tata Steel Mining Limited signed a memorandum of understanding with GAIL (India) Limited for supply of natural gas to its ferro alloys plant at Athgarh in Odisha's Cuttack district. According to the MoU, GAIL will supply the agreed quantity of natural gas through its pipeline from Gujarat to Athgarh.
  • The project will lower green house gas emission by 968 tons.

PNB Makes Positive Pay System Must for Cheques Worth more than Rs. 5 lakh

  • In a move to safeguard customers from fraudulent payment of cheques, state-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) made the Positive Pay System (PPS) compulsory for cheque payments worth Rs. 5 lakh and above.
  • This will come into effect from April 5, 2023.
  • Earlier, the mandatory submission of cheque details in PPS was set at Rs. 10 lakh and above.
  • The PPS is a system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which requires customers to reconfirm essential details (account number, cheque number, cheque alpha code, issue date, amount, and beneficiary name) when issuing cheques of a certain amount.

Hyderabad Hosts Meeting on Theme of Knowledge and Experience Exchange Program for Emerging Economies of Global South

  • Hyderabad hosted a meeting on the theme of Knowledge and experience exchange Programme for the emerging economies of the Global South from March 4 to 6. It provided a platform to discuss ways to accelerate development in the Global South. The inaugural session of the event 'India & The Global South: A Vision for a Shared Future' was addressed by G20 India Chief Coordinator Harsh Vardhan Shringla in Hyderabad.
  • The second session was focussed on Digital Public Infrastructure: a digital revolution on global financial Inclusion. The third session was on financial inclusion through digital innovations Knowledge and experience exchange. A side event on the topic of Role and Significance of G20 and GPFI also took place.

  • Mumbai Indians crushed Gujarat Giants by 143 runs to stamp their authority with an all-round show as the Women's Premier League got underway.
  • After posting a mammoth 207/5, powered by captain Harmanpreet Kaur's sensational 30-ball 65 laced with 14 boundaries, Mumbai Indians' bowlers led by Saika Ishaque (4/11) produced a superb show to restrict Gujarat Giants to just 64/9 in 15.1 overs and made a dream start to the competition.

Karnataka Beats Meghalaya to Clinch Santosh Trophy National Football Championship

  • Karnataka ended their 54-year wait to win the Santosh Trophy National Football Championship, beating Meghalaya 3-2 in the final at the King Fahd International Stadium in the Saudi Arabia capital, Riyadh.
  • Robin Yadav's stunning first-half free-kick was the highlight of the win for Karnataka, who won their first title after 1968-69 and fifth overall, counting their four earlier triumphs as Mysore, their previous name before 1973. They had last finished runners-up in 1975-76. For Meghalaya, it was their maiden entry in the final.

President Murmu Launches 'Catch the Rain-2023' Campaign

  • President Droupadi Murmu launched the 'Catch the Rain-2023' as part of efforts to turn conservation of water into a mass campaign in the run-up to the monsoon season.
  • The theme of the 2023 campaign was 'Source Sustainability for Drinking Water'.
  • During Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain-2023, the significant role that water plays in the empowerment of women was acknowledged with the theme 'Jal Shakti se Nari Shakti'.
  • The President also confered 18 awards under Swachh Bharat Mission – Grameen, Jal Jeevan Mission and National Water Mission under various categories and released a compendium of case stories titled 'Swachh Sujal Shakti Ki Abhivyakti'.

National Youth Parliament Festival Fourth Edition

  • The 4th edition of the National Youth Parliament Festival (NYPF) was held in the Central Hall of Parliament, New Delhi. The Youth Parliament has been organised since 2019, with the objective of strengthening democracy and enabling the student community to understand the working of Parliament.
  • Youth Parliament is a powerful dialogue on democracy with the vision to engage and enlighten the youth of the country to understand politics and the functioning of Parliament. It provides a platform to the youth to understand and serve society.
  • The National Youth Parliament Festival's (NYPF) goal is to give young people a platform to express themselves as they choose careers in public service and other fields. On the concept presented by the Prime Minister in his Mann Ki Baat Speech on December 31, 2017, NYPF was founded. The first edition of NYPF 2019 was held with the topic "Be the Voice of New India and Discover Solutions and Contribute to Policy" with the involvement of 88,000 youth in physical mode, drawing inspiration from the concept.

Amit Shah Launches Bengaluru Safe City Project

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off the Bengaluru Safe City project, Hoysala ERSS 112 Fleet and Mobile Command and Control Centre of Bengaluru city police. At the event, Shah said that the project was launched for the safety of women.
  • The government spent Rs. 2,500 crore to implement it in eight cities, and Rs. 670 crore for phase 1 in Bengaluru. In all, 4,100 cameras and eight drone cameras are being set up, while 96 command and control centres are also coming up, of which one is in Bengaluru. Also, 111 Mahila helpdesks are being set up and the moment people press the panic button, police teams will reach the spot. Besides, six mobile forensic units too have been launched.
  • The Safe City project will help policemen deal with tech-savvy criminals better.

Naval Commanders' Conference Begins Aboard INS Vikrant

  • The first edition of the Naval Commanders' Conference of 2023 commenced. The Conference serves as a platform to discuss important security issues at the military-strategic level as well as to interact with senior government functionaries through an institutionalised forum.
  • The first phase of the Commanders' Conference is being held at sea, and for the first-time, onboard India's first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the Naval Commanders onboard INS Vikrant on the opening day. Chief of Defence Staff and Chiefs of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force also interacted with the Naval Commanders during the conference.

Annual IIT Delhi Science and Technology Festival 'Tryst 2023'

  • IIT Delhi students' annual 'Tryst' festival for science, technology, and management was held. It was organised by the Co-Curricular and Academic Interaction Council (CAIC), which is made up completely of IIT Delhi students, and is widely regarded as North India's greatest technology festival.
  • Since it began 30 years ago, the event has become incredibly well-known. The festival concept for this year (2023) centred on a mascot from the year 1804, who travelled through time to the year 2023 to study cutting-edge technology.
  • A showcase by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), an auto show with manufacturers like Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Ducati, and Mercedes, the Startup Expo, the India 2047 Ideation Challenge, robotics competitions, a drone workshop, etc. were some of the main elements of the Tryst 2023.
  • This year's festival (2023), which featured more than 75 events, anticipated the attendance of close to 60,000 people and participation from close to 20,000 students from more than 700 colleges around the country.

NAAC Chairperson Resigns to Safeguard Sanctity of Post

  • National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) chairperson Bhushan Patwardhan tendered his resignation, days after alleging in a letter to the University Grants Commission (UGC) that universities were obtaining questionable grades through unfair means.
  • Patwardhan had first raised questions over accreditation processes and expressed a desire to resign in February, following which UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar appointed former AICTE chairperson Anil Sahasrabudhe to the post in March 2023.
  • NAAC is an autonomous body under the UGC that assesses and certifies higher educational institutions with gradings as part of accreditation.

Odisha CM Announces Establishment of Health University

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced the establishment of a health university in the state on the occasion of the 107th birth anniversary of politician Biju Patnaik. The university will be set up at Bhubaneshwar.
  • As per a notification issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department, all the medical and allied health science colleges and institutions will stand affiliated to the Odisha University of Health Sciences from the 2023-24 academic session.

Assam's 'Maidams' Clear Technical Requirements for UNESCO Tag

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam's pyramid-like structures known as moidams or maidams met all the technical requirements of UNESCO's World Heritage Centre.
  • Charaideo in eastern Assam has more than 90 moidams, the mound-burial system of the Ahoms who ruled large swathes of the present-day State and beyond for some 600 years until the advent of the British in the 1820s.

Indian Railways to Launch Bharat Gaurav Train to North East

  • The Indian Railways (IRCTC) has introduced the Bharat Gaurav Deluxe Tourist Train, which is set to depart from the New Delhi Safrdurjung Railway Station on March 21. The train will complete a North East Circuit, covering Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura and Meghalaya, in 15 days.
  • The theme for the North East circuit is "North East Discovery: Beyond Guwahati".
  • The Indian Railways launched the Bharat Gaurav scheme in 2021 to provide a fillip to Indian tourism and attract tourists from all over the world. The Bharat Gaurav Tourist Train launch is in line with the Government of India initiatives "Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat" and "Dekho Apna Desh" to promote domestic tourism.

  • In the resolution passed by the Supreme Court Collegium it was noted that the Delhi High Court Collegium had unanimously recommended on January 9 that Justice Sharma be made a permanent judge.

  • Rajya Sabha leader Kapil Sibal announced a new platform to fight "injustice" prevailing in the country under the BJP-led government, calling on everyone, including opposition chief ministers and leaders, to support him in his endeavour.
  • Sibal launched the platform "Insaaf" and a website "Insaaf ke sipahi" to help people rise in the fight against injustice with lawyers at the forefront of the initiative.
