Indian Navy hands over command of Combined Task Force 154 in Bahrain

The Indian Navy handed over command of Combined Task Force 154 (CTF 154) in Manama, Bahrain, on 14 October 2026, marking its first leadership of a CMF task force. CTF 154 is the CMF’s multinational maritime training force, with 47 partner nations. India joined CMF as an associate partner in 2022 and became a full member in 2023. During its tenure, the Indian Navy led 20 Staff Enhancement Training engagements, Operation Compass Rose 26-1, Operation Southern Readiness 26-2, and SPAR 2026. Training hours exceeded 7,800 with participants from 39 countries. The handover underscores India’s growing role as a security and training partner in the region.

India–UK KONKAN-26 Maritime Exercise Ongoing

India and the United Kingdom are conducting the bilateral maritime exercise KONKAN-26 from 8 to 15 October 2026 near Plymouth, United Kingdom. Indian Navy stealth frigate INS Trishul is participating, along with Royal Navy ships. The exercise includes Harbour and Sea phases, focusing on naval coordination, operational readiness, maritime security and strengthening defence cooperation between the two nations. This cooperation aims to enhance interoperability and cross-training, with joint exercises on anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and information sharing protocols. Indian officials emphasised routine sovereignty checks and the importance of safe navigation in coastal waters near Plymouth. The exercise demonstrates growing defence cooperation between India and the United Kingdom.

SIDM Champion Awards 2026 Recognise Indigenous Defence Advances

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presented the SIDM Champion Awards 2026 at the 8th Annual Session of the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers in New Delhi on 9 October 2026. A total of 15 awards recognised excellence in indigenous defence technology, innovation, manufacturing, import substitution and defence exports. Adani Defence & Aerospace was among the recipients. The awards underscore India’s push for self‑reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the Make in India framework. Winners highlighted advances in design, development and production of domestic defence equipment and systems, with collaboration from public and private partners to strengthen the national security ecosystem.

GRSE Launches INS Shreyas for Indian Navy

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Limited launched INS Shreyas (Yard 3040), a Next‑Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), at its shipyard in Kolkata, West Bengal, in October 2026. It is the third of four NGOPVs being constructed for the Indian Navy. The vessel was launched by Reyman Kochhar, in the presence of Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. The project supports Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, strengthening indigenous naval shipbuilding capabilities. INS Shreyas is designed for extended coastal patrols, surveillance and maritime security missions, contributing to a modern and domestically built naval fleet.

INDRA 2026 Naval Exercise to Bilateralize Maritime Cooperation

India and Russia are set to conduct Exercise INDRA 2026 from 13 to 18 October 2026 in Vladivostok, Russia. Indian Naval Ship INS Sahyadri has arrived to participate alongside Russian Federation Navy assets. The exercise focuses on enhancing maritime interoperability, joint anti-submarine and surface warfare, and coordinated security operations in shared areas of interest. Both sides aim to strengthen operational coordination, tactical signaling, and information exchange, while building mutual trust and professional exchanges between officers and crew. INDRA 2026 reflects longstanding defence cooperation and strategic alignment between India and Russia amid evolving regional security dynamics.

SAREX-2026 conducted by Indian Coast Guard off Paradip

The Indian Coast Guard organised the 12th National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise, SAREX-2026, off the Paradip coast in Odisha during October 2026. The exercise was inaugurated by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth and involved ships, aircraft and helicopters, with international observers. It focused on strengthening maritime emergency response, search and rescue coordination and international cooperation. SAREX-2026 provided a platform to test response times, inter-agency coordination, and logistics for mass rescue operations at sea, reflecting India’s emphasis on maritime safety and disaster readiness.

India observes 94th Indian Air Force Day on 8 October 2026

India celebrated the 94th Indian Air Force Day on 8 October 2026. The year’s theme is ‘Indian Air Force – Infallible, Impervious and Precise.’ The day marks the IAF’s establishment in 1932 and honours its role in national security. The IAF’s motto, Nabhah Sprisham Deeptam, translates to 'Touch the Sky with Glory.' Celebrations included parades, flypasts and tributes at multiple bases, highlighting air power, readiness and capability to respond to emergencies. Veterans, serving personnel and families participated in events across the country, reinforcing the IAF’s public profile and strategic importance.
