Switzerland Glaciers' Overall Volume Shrinks by 10% in Last Two Years
As per a report, the glaciers in Switzerland, this year (2023), suffered their second worst melt rate after record depletion in 2022, lessening their comprehensive volume by 10% in the last two years.
In 2022, Switzerland's glaciers shed six per cent of their overall volume and this year (in 2023), they lost another four per cent, representing the second largest decline since measurements began, the Cryospheric Commission of the Swiss Academy of Sciences found in a new study.
The result of two consecutive extreme years had been collapsing glacier tongues and some smaller glaciers disappearing altogether.

Tamil Nadu, Kerala May Join Hands to Count Endangered Nilgiri tahr
India, known for its diverse wildlife, is also home to Nilgiri Tahr, a precious creature found in the highest mountain ranges of the southern India. A species of the wild goat, the Nilgiri Tahr is native to the Nilgiri Hills and the Western Ghats mountain ranges in India. It is also the state animal of Tamil Nadu.
In a quest to conserve the animal, the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala decided to join hands to conserve the animal species. Tamil Nadu is now working on a standardised protocol to count the endangered population of southern India's only mountain ungulate. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department is also set to propose the Kerala government to conduct a synchronised census, as the animal is only found in select habitats in the two states.
Antarctica Witnessed Most Intense Heatwave Ever Recorded on Earth in 2022
A new study found that the most intense heat wave ever recorded on Earth was in Antarctica in March 2022, when the temperatures near the eastern coast reached 39 degrees Celsius above average.
Generally, the temperatures in March on the east coast of Antarctica near Dome C are around minus 54 degrees Celsius, marking a transition into autumn on the continent. However, on March 18, 2022, temperatures reached minus 10 degrees Celsius, warmer than the hottest temperature recorded during the summer months in that region.
Madhya Pradesh, which is home to the most tigers in the country, has got a new protected area for the big cats named 'Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve', the seventh in the state and 54th in the country.

Oil Minister Launches India's First Green Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus
Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri flagged off India's first green hydrogen fuel cell bus in Delhi.
The project for green hydrogen fuel cell bus has been undertaken by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) in collaboration with Tata Motors. Indian Oil has initiated a scientifically designed program to undertake operational trials of 15 fuel cell buses powered by green hydrogen on the identified routes in Delhi, Haryana and U.P.

Windergy India 2023 to Begin from October 4
The Windergy India 2023 summit, a three-day event, will commence on October 4 at the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam, Tamil Nadu. The event will host a significant delegation from Denmark, highlighting the Indo-Danish energy partnership and the strong relationship between the two countries.
Denmark's renewable energy capacity of 2.3 gigawatts positions it as a renewable energy exporter, and the summit will focus on the wind energy sector's evolution, including advanced generation technology and local manufacturing of key components such as gearboxes and generator blades.
The event also aims to explore opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the wind energy sector through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation (TIIC).
