DU Colleges Plan to Offer Diplomas, Certification Courses in East Asian Languages
Three Delhi University, DU colleges, are likely to introduce advanced diploma and certification programmes in East Asian languages. Ramjas College, Hansraj College, and Ram Lal Anand College have submitted proposals to the university's Academic Council to launch these new courses.
The Academic Council is set to meet on October 10 to review various policy proposals and report approvals from the Vice Chancellor.
As per the proposal, Ramjas College will offer an Advanced Diploma in Korean (KP-3), while Hansraj College aims to introduce a Certificate Course in Chinese (CP-1) along with Diploma courses in Korean (KP-2) and Japanese (JP-2).
Ram Lal Anand College will introduce Advanced Diplomas in Chinese (CP-3) and Japanese (JP-3). These programmes will be offered by the colleges under the Department of East Asian Studies.
The decision to launch these diploma and certificate courses was based on recommendations from the Faculty of Social Sciences during its August meeting.

IISc Bangalore Position Slips in Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2025
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, slipped to the 251-300 band in the latest Times Higher Education's World University Rankings 2025, which were released. While it retained its position as the top Indian university, IISc failed to enter the global top 250.
The rankings of Anna University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences improved with all four entering the 401-500 band.
The University of Oxford retained the number one position in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for the ninth year in a row followed by MIT. Moreover, US and UK universities dominate the top 10 position.
The UK-based Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 feature 2092 universities from over 100 countries and regions.
Jharkhand Doubles Students' Quota for Overseas Scholarships
The Jharkhand government doubled the quota of students eligible for the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship scheme from 25 to 50.
This was approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
NCERT Partners with Amazon for K-12 Books; to Triple-fold Publication of Textbooks
The National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will triple-fold the publication of textbooks and print 15 crore books this year, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced. The announcement was made at an event for the signing of a Letter of Engagement between NCERT and Amazon.
This partnership, formalised through a Letter of Engagement (LoE), guarantees that NCERT books will be available at Maximum Retail Price (MRP) across all serviceable pin codes in India, while ensuring that students have access to genuine learning material and resources.

India Has Eliminated Trachoma: WHO
The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared that the Government of India has eliminated trachoma as a public health problem becoming the third country in South-East Asia to achieve the milestone.
Trachoma is a bacterial infection that affects the eyes. It is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Trachoma is contagious, spreading through contact with the eyes, eyelids, nose or throat secretions of infected people. If left untreated it causes irreversible blindness.

Bihar Government Launches Transfer Policy Focusing on Teachers with Health Issues
The Bihar government unveiled a new policy for the transfer and posting of government school teachers, prioritising individuals with serious illnesses and disabilities. Education Minister Sunil Kumar announced that all transfer applications will now be submitted exclusively online.
"The new transfer policy brings uniformity to transfers and postings of teachers of government schools in the state. It will not only provide relief to teachers but will also improve the quality of education.
The policy prioritises teachers facing health challenges, with preference given to those who are seriously ill, disabled, widowed, divorced, living alone, or part of a husband-wife teaching pair.
IIT Madras launches CyStar to Boost Cybersecurity Research and Innovation
In a bid to strengthen India's cybersecurity landscape, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) launched the Centre for Cybersecurity, Trust and Reliability (CyStar). The centre aims to foster both fundamental and applied research, focusing on safeguarding critical infrastructure and addressing the growing cybersecurity needs of industries such as finance, healthcare, automotive, and electronics.
CyStar will spearhead research in several cutting-edge fields, including blockchain technology, security for AI models, cryptography, quantum security, and IoT security. This research will not only enhance India's cybersecurity infrastructure but also stimulate innovations that can be applied globally.
The centre was inaugurated in a ceremony led by Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, along with CyStar coordinators Professor Shweta Agrawal, Professor Chester Rebeiro, and Professor John Augustine, all from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras.

IIT Madras Pravartak to Train Engineering Students in Manufacturing, Production
IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation has partnered with SWAYAM Plus to launch a new initiative to train engineering students with mechanical, manufacturing, and production backgrounds with industry-ready technical skills.
The last date to apply is October 10. The training programme will be from October 14 to 26. Those interested can register through the following link – iitmpravartak.org.in/digital_mfg_practice.
This programme will provide hands-on training with a fee of Rs. 6,000 + GST. Accommodation will be offered at the IIT Madras campus at a cost of Rs 650 per day per student, which includes food and stay. Students can make accommodation requests can be made on/before October 10.
This course offers a practical approach to bridge the gap between theoretical engineering concepts and real-world manufacturing processes. Skills such as simple quantification, back-of-the-envelope calculations, quick engineering drawings, use of the right tools, classification/taxonomy fundamentals and systems approach to planning and execution will be introduced and strengthened.

WHO Approves First mpox Diagnostic Test for Emergency Use
The World Health Organization (WHO) approved the first diagnostic test for mpox where the results can be immediately known, saying it could prove pivotal in helping to stop the rising global cases of the deadly virus.
The approval for emergency use was given to Abbott Molecular Inc. PCR test, Alinity m MPXV assay. The WHO said that the test would be pivotal in expanding diagnostic capacity in countries facing mpox outbreaks, where the need for quick and accurate testing has risen sharply.
According to WHO, limited testing capacity and delays in confirming mpox cases persist in Africa, contributing to the continued spread of the virus.
Outside Africa, one case each of mpox clade 1b was reported from Sweden and Thailand. India is the third country to report this fast-spreading mpox strain.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo, which accounts for more than 90% of the reported cases.
Delhi University Introduces Dual Degree Option with Regular and ODL Programmes
The University of Delhi (DU) announced that students can now pursue two degree programmes simultaneously within the university. According to a new notification, students can enroll in one degree through the regular mode at any DU college or department, while the second degree can be pursued via Open and Distance Learning (ODL) through the School of Open Learning.
This new policy allows both current and prospective DU students to opt for dual degrees. However, students are not allowed to pursue two similar degrees, such as BCom (Hons) and BCom (Pass), even if one is in ODL mode.
Students pursuing dual degrees are required to meet the academic requirements for each programme separately. This includes attending classes, completing assignments, giving presentations, passing assessments, and meeting promotion criteria for each programme.
Delhi Schools to Teach New Criminal Laws in Special NCERT Modules
The Delhi government introduced special modules on three new criminal laws for senior secondary students to enhance legal awareness.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in Delhi developed these modules, covering the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam for students in Classes 11 and 12.
The main goal of this initiative is to instil a sense of responsibility amongst students and educators, particularly concerning issues related to emotional and physical violence, ensuring they can effectively address such matters.
All government, government-aided, and unaided private schools under the Directorate of Education (DoE) have been directed to share these modules with teachers, students, and parents.
