Lok Sabha Passes Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill Allowing 4 Account Nominees
The Lok Sabha passed the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which allows bank account holders to have up to four nominees in their accounts.
Another proposed change relates to redefining 'substantial interest' for directorships, which could increase to Rs. 2 crore instead of the current limit of Rs. 5 lakh, which was fixed almost six decades ago.
The Bill piloted by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was approved by a voice vote.
Rajya Sabha Passes Bill to Streamline Oil and Gas Exploration
The Rajya Sabha passed through voice vote the Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Amendment Bill, 2024, to streamline oil and gas exploration business in India and delinked petroleum operations from mining operations. It also broadens the scope of mineral oils expanding it to include naturally occurring hydrocarbon, coal bed methane and shale gas/oil.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Puri moved the motion for the Bill and it was debated before its passage in the Upper House.
According to Puri, this Bill seeks to eliminate punishments in the form of imprisonment and enhances penalties for compliance and expeditious mechanism for levying penalties and handling appeals.
Opposition parties questioned the motive of the Bill and sought that it should be sent to a standing committee for scrutiny.

Delhi Govt Launches Portal for Old-Age Pension Scheme
Delhi government expanded its old-age pension scheme to include an additional 80,000 senior citizens, raising the total number of beneficiaries to 5.3 lakh. AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal highlighted the government's commitment to social welfare and announced the launch of an online portal to make the application process more accessible. The new initiative aims to streamline the pension distribution process and ensure more senior citizens benefit from the scheme.
The government also introduced new pension amounts, depending on the age of the applicants. Senior citizens between the ages of 60-69 will receive Rs. 2,000 monthly, while those aged 70 and above will receive Rs. 2,500 per month. Additionally, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced plans to provide a monthly pension of Rs 5,000 for differently-abled individuals.

Centre Clears 'One Nation One Subscription' for Access to Research Articles, Journals
Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central cabinet granted its approval to a new scheme named 'One Nation One Subscription' (ONOS) for providing country-wide access to scholarly research articles and journal publications.
As a central sector initiative, ONOS will enable nationwide access to a vast repository of high-impact research articles and journal publications.
The scheme aims to democratise academic and scientific knowledge, creating a fertile ground for research and innovation throughout the country.
A total of about Rs. 6,000 crore has been allocated for One Nation One Subscription for three calendar years, 2025, 2026 and 2027 as a new Central Sector Scheme (CSS).
The benefits of 'One Nation One Subscription' scheme will be provided to all higher educational institutions under the management of the Central or state government and research & development institutions of the Central government through a national subscription coordinated by the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET), an autonomous inter-university centre of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
