Narendra Modi among Most Admired Global Personalities

A global survey was carried out by YouGov. The men's list is dominated by politicians, sportspersons and businesspeople while that of women has more actresses, singers and TV personalities.
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi was listed as 8th most admired man in the world as per an international survey carried out by YouGov. Former US President Barack Obama retained his position at the top.
For this survey, 42,000 people from 38 countries were asked who they admired most.
Barack Obama continued to maintain his position at number 1. He had dethroned Bill Gates last year. Among women, Michelle Obama bagged the top spot. Microsoft founder and one of the richest persons in the world Bill Gates is in second spot among men while Chinese President Xi Jinping is on third place.
Men's list has many sportspersons in top 20. Football stars Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are in 4th and 7th spots respectively. Messi has been the biggest gainer among men as he rose from 11th spot to 7th. Other sportspersons in top 20 include Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan. Sachin Tendulkar leads this pack at number 12.
Among women, Angelina Jolie and UK's Queen Elizabeth have followed Michelle Obama in rankings. Women's list has been dominated by actresses and singers. After Jolie, Scarlett Johansson is at number 5, followed by Emma Watson and Taylor Swift. Germany's former chancellor Angela Merkel is in 8th spot among the women category. Priyanka Chopra is at number 10. Chopra and Afghan activist Malala Yousafzai have climbed the farthest in the list.
List of most admired men has been dominated by those in political, business and sporting backgrounds. Women's list has more actresses, TV presenters and singers.

Bell hooks: Author and Feminist Dies

Acclaimed feminist author and activist bell hooks died at the age of 69.
hooks was considered a trailblazer within the intersectional feminism movement, and published some 40 books during her life.
Her real name was Gloria Jean Watkins but she adopted her great-grandmother's name Bell Blair Hooks for her writing.
However, hooks deliberately styled her own name with lower case letters to focus attention on her message rather than herself.
Her first book, Ain't I a Woman? Black Women and Feminism, was published in 1981.
hooks went on to release more than 40 books, ranging from essays and poetry to children's books.

Financial Times also Names Elon Musk its 'Person of the Year'

The Financial Times newspaper followed the Time magazine in naming Elon Musk, the chief of Tesla Inc as its "person of the year", commending him for the work done in transforming the electric vehicle industry. Tesla, the global EV leader, has pushed many young consumers and legacy automakers to shift focus to electric vehicles.

Ex-CEO of PSG Institutions C.R. Swaminathan Passes Away

Former Chief Executive Officer of PSG Institutions and former chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Southern Region, C. R. Swaminathan passed away. He was 74.
Swaminathan, a B.Sc Agriculture graduate from Bapla Agricultural College and MBA at PSG Institutions, joined PSG Industrial Institute as Assistant Sales Manager - Marketing in 1971 and was appointed CEO of the Institutions in 1985, a post he held till 2005.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is a non-governmental trade association and advocacy group headquartered in New Delhi, India, founded in 1895.

Writer Rajeshwari Tejaswi Passes Away

Rajeshwari Tejasw writer and wife of late writer K. P. Poornachandra Tejaswi, passed away in Bengaluru.
Rajeshwari began writing only after the death of Tejaswi in 2007. She wrote her first book 'Nanna Tejaswi' shortly after Tejaswi's demise, and was an account of their life together. The book went on to have over six reprints. She later wrote a personal memoir titled 'Namma Menegoo Bandaru Gandhiji'.
She had been actively involved in the activities of K.P. Poornachandra Tejaswi Trust at Kottigehara in Mudigere taluk.

Mahakavi Subramania Bharati's Birth Anniversary

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu paid tribute to the great freedom fighter and poet extraordinaire Mahakavi Subramania Bharati on his birth anniversary.
In a tweet, he said, Subramania Bharati was a literary genius, journalist and social reformer who cared deeply for the downtrodden. He said, Bharati's writings infused the spirit of nationalism in people and continue to enjoy universal appeal.

Former President Pranab Mukherjee's Birth Anniversary

President Ram Nath Kovind paid homage to former President Pranab Mukherjee on his Birth Anniversary.
He paid floral tributes in front of a portrait of Pranab Mukherjee at Raj Bhavan, Uttarakhand.
Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu paid tribute to former President Pranab Mukherjee on his birth anniversary.
In a tweet, Mr. Naidu said, Pranab Mukherjee was an erudite statesman, towering intellectual and a consensus builder. He said Pranab Da served the nation with distinction in various capacities.

Masayuki Uemura, Creator of Nintendo's iconic NES Console, Passed Away

Masayuki Uemura, a Japanese home computer game pioneer whose Nintendo consoles sold millions of units worldwide, has died, according to the university in Kyoto where he taught. He was 78.
Uemura, the lead architect behind Nintendo Co.'s trailblazing home game consoles, died, Ritsumeikan University said in a statement. The cause of his death was not released.
Born in Tokyo in 1943, Uemura studied electronic engineering at the Chiba Institute of Technology and joined Nintendo in 1971.
Uemura was tasked by then-president Hiroshi Yamauchi in 1981 with developing a home console for games like Donkey Kong, which was a huge hit in the United States at the time but only available for arcade use.

Indian American Raghavan promoted to key White House post under Biden rule

US President Joe Biden elevated Indian American Gautam Raghavan to a new position making him head of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel.
Biden announced Raghavan's promotion to the key White House post after UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced his intent to appoint Cathy Russell as the next executive director of UNICEF.
Russell is currently the head of WH PPO.
A first-generation immigrant, Raghavan was born in India, raised in Seattle and graduated from Stanford University. He is the editor of "West Wingers: Stories from the Dream Chasers, Change Makers, and Hope Creators Inside the Obama White House." He lives with his husband and their daughter in Washington, DC.
