American Author Joan Didion Dies

US author Joan Didion died at her home in New York. She was 87.
The literary icon, was known for works such as Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The Year of Magical Thinking.
Didion was one of the country's most trenchant writers and astute observers. Her best-selling works of fiction, commentary, and memoir have received numerous honors and are considered modern classics.
She engaged in the cool and ruthless dissection of politics and culture, covering everything from hippies to presidential campaigns.

Cricketer Rishabh Pant is Uttarakhand's Brand Ambassador

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was appointed the brand ambassador of Uttarakhand with an aim to promote sports and create mental health awareness among the state's youth.
Pant was born in the state's Roorkee town in Haridwar district.
The cricketer thanked the CM for the honour, saying that he will try his best to motivate people towards sports and fitness.

Justice Girish Thakorlal Nanavati Passes Away

Former Supreme Court judge Justice Girish Thakorlal Nanavati, who investigated the 1984 anti-Sikh and the 2002 Godhra riots, passed away. He was 86.
He was a permanent judge at the Gujarat High Court from July 19, 1979, and transferred to the Orissa High Court on December 14, 1993.
Nanavati was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Orissa HC with effect from January 31, 1994. He was transferred as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court from September 28, 1994. Nanavati was appointed as judge of the Supreme Court with effect from March 6, 1995, and retired on February 16, 2000.

Former Union Minister R. L. Jalappa Passes Away

Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister R.L. Jalappa passed away. He was 96.
Mr. Jalappa was elected to the Lok Sabha from Chickballapur constituency on the Janata Dal ticket in 1996 and became the Union Minister for Textiles in the governments headed by former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and I.K. Gujral. He later joined the Congress and was re-elected from the same constituency in 1998, 1999, and 2004. He served as member of several parliamentary committees.
Mr. Jalappa was in the Congress till 1979. He quit the party to form the Karnataka Kranti Ranga with the former Chief Minister D. Devaraj Urs and was recognised as a prominent OBC leader. In 1980, the party merged with the Janata Party. He again joined the Congress in 1998.
