Richard Leakey, Kenyan Conservationist who Campaigned against Ivory Trade, Dies

Richard Leakey, a Kenyan conservationist and paleoanthropologist who spearheaded campaigns against the ivory trade to save the dwindling African elephant population, died. He was 77.
For years, Mr. Leakey served in various roles in the government, including as director of the state-run National Museums of Kenya and twice as board chairman at the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Indian Football: Former Goalkeeper Kanai Sarkar Passes Away

The All India Football Federation condoled the death of former Indian national team goalkeeper Kanai Sarkar, who passed away.
Kanai Sarkar made his national team debut in September 1971, in a friendly match against the USSR, and was also a part of the Bengal team which went to Tehran to participate in the Asian Club Cup in 1970.

Online travel company EaseMyTrip appointed actors Vijay Raaz and Varun Sharma as its brand ambassadors. This is the first time that the company has appointed brand ambassadors.
The actors with their mass appeal and strong connect with the audience will complement the brand's image.

Alia Bhatt is PETA India's 2021 'Person of the Year'

To celebrate Alia Bhatt's work in support of an animal-friendly fashion industry and her advocacy for dogs and cats in need, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has named the actress its 2021 Person of the Year.
Alia Bhatt is an animal lover and often shares pictures with her pets. This year, Alia Bhatt invested in Phool, the company behind Fleather, which is a vegan leather made from discarded temple flowers. Her vegan kidswear line, Ed-a-Mamma, also won a 2021 PETA India fashion award for helping to nurture kids' love for animals and nature. Alia also starred in a pro-adoption PETA India campaign to help cats and dogs. She has used her position to call for stronger animal protection laws.

EO Wilson, Dubbed 'Darwin's Heir', Dies

Edward Osborne Wilson, one of the world's leading naturalists and conservationists, died aged 92.
Wilson was an award-winning biologist and professor at Harvard and Duke Universities and earned the nickname of the natural heir to Charles Darwin.
He specialised in studying ants and ecosystems, and campaigned to halt the rapid global decline in biodiversity.
During his career he discovered more than 400 species of ants, and proved that ants usepheromone excretions to communicate with one another.
EO Wilson applied his study of ants to other organisms, including humans.

Former President of Greece Karolos Papoulias Dies

Veteran Greek politician Karolos Papoulias, who served as President at the height of the economic crisis of the 2010s, died at the age of 92.
Papoulias spent a decade as president after being elected in 2005 and again in 2010, during the crisis that plunged the country into the gravest political and economic turmoil of recent decades.
His popularity suffered a major blow for supporting austerity measures dictated by international lenders in return for a bailout, which sparked violent protests.

Desmond Tutu, South African Anti-apartheid Campaigner and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Passes Away

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and veteran of South Africa's struggle against white minority rule died at the age of 90.
In 1984 Tutu Key dates in the life of South African cleric and activist Desmond Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent opposition to apartheid. A decade later, he witnessed the ends of that regime and he chaired a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, set up to unearth atrocities committed during those dark days.
The outspoken Tutu was considered the nation's conscience by both Black and white, an enduring testament to his faith and spirit of reconciliation in a divided nation.
