Archery World Cup

  • The Indian women's compound archery team defeated hosts U.S.A. 226-225 to enter the finals but the men's team lost in the last-eight stage of the World Championship.
  • The seventh-seeded women's team, comprising Priya Gurjar, Muskan Kirar and Jyothi Surekha, held its nerves in a close battle with Linda Ochoa-Anderson, Paige Pearce and Makenna Proctor.
  • However, the men's team, led by the seasoned Abhishek Verma, lost 235-238 to Austria in the quarter-finals.
  • The Indian women's trio will next face top seeds Colombia in the final. Colombia defeated France 234-220 in its semi-finals match.

Beijing 2022 Launches Official Slogan: "Together for a Shared Future"

  • The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics unveiled its official motto, "Together for a Shared Future", during a ceremony at the city's Capital Museum. The motto was chosen after a lengthy process that included a total of 79 different proposals. This motto embodies the Olympic spirit, the Chinese way of revealing the Olympic spirit.
  • That's because 'together' embodies a type of unity, cohesion and a way of overcoming difficulties. The Games will be held from February 4-20, with Beijing set to become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Raja Rithvik Becomes India's 70th Grandmaster

  • Raja Rithvik has become India's 70th and latest chess Grandmaster, achieving his third and final norm at an event in Hungary.
  • Former world champion and Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand praised the 17-year old Warangal native for entering the GM club.
  • Pune's Harshit Raja had become India's 69th Grandmaster.

Geeta Samota Becomes 'Fastest Indian' to Summit Two Peaks

  • CISF official Geeta Samota became the "fastest Indian" to summit two peaks located in Africa and Russia. Sub inspector Geeta Samota had scaled Mount Elbrus in Russia, the highest peak in Europe. While Mt Elbrus (5,642 m) is in Russia, the Kilimanjaro peak (5,895 m) is located in Tanzania and is Africa's highest peak.
  • Samota works with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), a central paramilitary force under the command of the Union Home Ministry. Geeta Samota joined CISF in 2011 and was in the unit in 2012. She has also scaled Mt Satopanth (7075 metres; located in Uttarakhand) and Mt Lobuche (in Nepal). She was also a team member of the Mt Everest expedition team of the CAPF.

After NZ, England too Calls Off Tour of Pakistan

  • England called off next month's men's and women's tours of Pakistan, three days after New Zealand abandoned their white-ball series in the South Asian country over security concerns.
  • The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) arrived at the decision to withdraw after deliberating over the weekend, pulling out of what would have been the country's first tour of Pakistan since 2005.

Kohli to Step Down as Royal Challengers Bangalore Captain after IPL 2021

  • Virat Kohli announced that he would step down from Royal Challengers Bangalore captaincy after the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021). Earlier, Kohli had announced that he would relinquish the captaincy of the Indian cricket team for T20 Internationals after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
  • Kohli of late hasn't been at his peak as a batsman in Tests, a format which he adores.
  • For close to two years now, Kohli hasn't scored a long-form century and made 563 runs at 26.80 in 12 Tests during this period.
  • While announcing his decision to quit national T20 captaincy, he had stated that he was taking the step to manage his workload better.

Pankaj Advani Lifts Asian Snooker Championship

  • India's Pankaj Advani successfully defended the Asian Snooker Championship at the Al Messila in Doha, Qatar outplaying Amir Sarkhosh of Iran 6-3 (72-42, 72-0, 70-49, 41-66, 70-17, 30-68, 74-34, 12-50, 64-44) in the best of 11 frames final.
  • Pankaj had triumphed in 2019 but in 2017 he was the runner-up. In 2019, Pankaj also became the only player who won the titles in all forms of billiards, snooker, 6Reds, and 10Reds competitions.

Raninder Singh Re-elected NRAI President for Fourth Time

  • Raninder Singh was re-elected as the President of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) the governing body for the sport of Shooting in India, in the General Body Elections held at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
  • The General Body Election of the NRAI had representation from 59 of its members, of whom 56 voted in favour of the re-election of Raninder Singh while 3 votes were cast in favour of Shyam Singh Yadav.
  • Kunwar Sultan Singh was elected unopposed as the secretary general of the national shooting body while Randeep Mann was made the treasurer.
  • Odisha MP Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo will continue to be the federation's senior vice-president besides the eight VP.
  • Pawan Kumar Singh will remain the apex body's joint secretary alongside Sheila Kanungo.
  • The NRAI decided to go ahead with the polls despite the impediments it faced after the petition filed by challenger Yadav in the Delhi High Court, followed by the sports ministry's directive to initiate elections afresh.
