Cricket Association of Bengal Gives Legendary Cricketer Award to Jhulan

  • Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) conferred former India women's team pacer Jhulan Goswami with the Legendary Cricketer award at its annual prize distribution day.
  • The cricketer recently retired from cricket after playing for nearly 20 years and establishing many records.
  • CAB held its annual prize distribution day on October 29 after a gap of two years.
  • This year, prizes were given to players for the season 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22.
  • Special awards were also conferred to various players on occasion.
  • Indian women's cricketer Deepti Sharma was conferred the Iconic Cricketer award for winning silver medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022.
  • Uday Bhanu Banerjee and Gargi Banerjee were awarded Kartick Bose Lifetime Achievement Award for 2019-2020.

Rohan Bopanna, Matwe Middelkoop Enter in the Quarter-finals of Erste Bank Open

  • India's Rohan Bopanna and Dutch Matwe Middelkoop beat the Argentine pairing of Pedro Cachin and Diego Schwartzman in straight sets to progress to the quarter-finals of Erste Bank Open in Austria.
  • The Indo-Dutch combination defeated Cachin and Schwartzman 6-1 6-3. Bopanna and Middelkoop will face Andres Molteni and Santiago Gonzalez next. The Argentine-Mexican pair of Malteni and Gonzalez defeated second seeds Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski 7-6(6) 7-5 in another match.
  • Bopanna and Middelkoop had won their third title of the season in Tel Aviv early this month.

BCCI Announces Equal Pay for Centrally Contracted Men and Women Indian Cricketers

  • In a historic move, BCCI announced equal pay for all centrally contracted men and women Team India cricketers. BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced the development.
  • According to the current system, Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. will earn match fees of Rs. 15 lakh per Test, Rs. 6 lakh per ODI and Rs. 3 lakh per T20I, the same as their men counterparts.
  • Earlier this year, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) had struck a deal with the country's players' association, which enabled the women cricketers to earn as much as the mail players, while Cricket Australia (CA) is also working to do away with gender disparity.

Harmanpreet Named Captain for India's FIH Pro League Matches in Bhubaneswar

  • Harmanpreet Singh was named captain of a 22-member Indian men's hockey team for the season opening FIH Pro League matches against Spain and New Zealand in Bhubaneswar.
  • Manpreet Singh has been named as his deputy.

Western Air Command Wins Air Force Lawn Tennis Championship

  • Western Air Command, Indian Air Force (IAF) won the Air Force Lawn Tennis Championship 2022-23 held at Head Quarter MC, Vayu Sena Nagar, Nagpur. The final match of the team Championship was played between Western Air Command and Training Command in which Western Air Command emerged as the winner. The final of the open singles was played between Corporal Pradeep of Training Command and Sergeant Manolin of Western Air Command and Corporal Pradeep emerged as the winner.
  • The Championship was inaugurated by Air Marshal Vibhas Pande, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, HQ MC on 17 October 2022. A total of eight teams comprising of 48 players from the seven Commands of Indian Air Force, participated in the Championship.
  • The Championship was held in two events namely, Team Championship and Open Singles. The matches not only showcased the talents and great potential of the players but generated a lot of enthusiasm amongst the air warriors to pick up Lawn Tennis as a sport.

Yuvraj Singh Named Brand Ambassador of T20 World Cup for the Blind

  • The Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) announced former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh as its brand ambassador for the 3rd T20 World Cup for the Blind to be held in India in December. Ajay Kumar Reddy B2 (Andhra Pradesh) would lead the Indian team while Venkateswara Rao Dunna – B2 (Andhra Pradesh) would be the vice-captain.
  • The World Cup matches will be held from December 6 to 17. The participating countries for the 3rd T20 World Cup for the Blind are India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • The World Cup is an initiative of the Samarthanam Trust for the disabled, which has been organizing this championship since 2012. Samarthanam perceives sports as a medium to improve inclusion and encourage persons with disabilities on various fronts.

Formula-1 Racing: Max Verstappen Wins US Grand Prix 2022

  • Belgium's Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing won the 2022 Formula 1 Aramco United States Grand Prix 2022 which was held at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, United States (US). With this, he equalled Germany's Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher's record of 13 wins in a Formula 1 season. He defeated the UK's Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes. Hamilton had to settle for second place, with Mercedes' wait for a 2022 victory continuing, while Leclerc salvaged a podium finish for Ferrari as the Italian team mathematically dropped out of contention for the constructors' crown.

Indian Shooter Swapnil Kusale Wins India's 3rd Paris 2024 Olympics Quota

  • Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale won India's third Paris 2024 Olympics quota place at the ISSF World Championship in Cairo, Egypt. It was Kusale's fourth-place finish in the men's 50 meter rifle 3 positions event that earned him the quota. Kusale, who shot a qualification score of 593 to qualify for the eight-shooter final at the second spot, was in contention for the gold-medal match too but a low 8.2 in his final shot in the eighth series in the final denied him a medal. He is also an ISSF World Cup gold medalist.
