FIFA: Tazuni unveiled as mascot for 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

Tazuni, a fun, football-loving penguin was unveiled as the Official Mascot of the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023. Tazuni would become an important symbol for the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand, appearing on official tournament merchandise and media platforms, as well as in real life in community activities ahead of the event.
Tazuni, a 15-year-old midfielder whose story involves her falling in love with football after playing with a group of children on a beach, is set to feature on merchandise, media platforms and community activities in the build-up to the FIFA Women's World Cup. The name Tazuni is a fusion of the Tasman Sea, the home of penguins and Unity, which is the key value of the event.

Javelin Thrower, DP Manu Bags Gold at National Open Athletics Championships

D. P. Manu created a new meet record in men's javelin with a best throw of 81.23m at the 61st National Open athletics championships at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru, Karanata.
It was nowhere close to his personal best (84.35m) but with less-than-ideal preparation, he wasn't allowed to practise at the venue ahead of the competition, and under wet conditions, the Services athlete hailing from Belur, Karnataka, showed his worth yet again.
Manu's opening salvo was an impressive 80.32m, taking him past Ravinder Singh Khaira's previous meet record of 79.04m set in 2016. The 22-year-old bettered it with 80.50m off his third throw before finishing with a high of 81.23m.

Sajan Bhanwala Becomes 1st Indian to Win Medal at U23 Worlds, Takes Bronze

Sajan Bhanwala became the first Indian Greco Roman wrestler to win a medal at the Under-23 World Championship when he edged past Ukraine's Dmytro Vasetskyi on 'criteria' to emerge winner in the bronze play-off.
It was the Ukrainian who pulled off a four-pointer on the edge of the circle for a solid start but Bhanwala bounced back immediately with a strong move that got him into a position from where he could pin his rival.

Irish Professional Bernard Dunne is Indian Boxing's New High Performance Director

Former Irish professional boxer Bernard Dunne was named the high performance director (HPD) for Indian boxing. Dunne, who had a five-year (2017-2022) stint with the Irish Athletic Boxing Association, replaced Santiago Nieva.
During Dunne's tenure with the Ireland team, Kellie Harrington emerged World (2018, Delhi) and Olympic (2021, Tokyo) champion, while Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O'Rourke won golds at this year's World championships in Istanbul and Aidan Walsh secured a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.
Dunne, who has bagged 13 national titles, joined the Indian boxing elite programme at Patiala. He won the WBA World Championship in 2009 and the European Championship in 2007.
Dunne led the Irish high-performance boxing team from 2017 to 2022.

Long jumper Shaili Singh Wins Gold Medal on Final Day of National Athletics Open Championships

Teenaged Shaili Singh showed yet another glimpse of her brimming potential by winning her first National Open athletics gold with a leap of 6.41m in the women's long jump event at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru, Karnataka.
L. Sruthilekshmi and Nayana James , two long jumpers from Kerala, clinched the silver and bronzr, respectively after recording identical jumps of 6.22m. The silver went to Sruhilekshmi because she did not foul in any of her attempts while Nayana committed two fouls.

Roger Binny Succeeds Sourav Ganguly as BCCI President

Former World Cup-winning all-rounder Roger Binny was elected unopposed as the new Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president at the board's latest Annual General Meeting (AGM). Binny replaced Sourav Ganguly as the board chief, ending the former India captain's 3-year tenure at the top job.
Binny, who played 27 Tests and 72 ODIs for India between 1979 and 1987, has held key positions in administration in the Karnataka State Cricket Association over the years. He has been the president of the KSCA since 2019. Binny also served as the national selector for the men's cricket team in the past.
The following members were elected as the new Office Bearers of the BCCI:
President: Roger Binny, Vice President: Rajeev Shukla, Secretary: Jay Shah, Joint Secretary: Devajit Saikia, Treasurer: Ashish Shelar.

Qatar to Host AFC Asian Cup 2023

Qatar will stage next year's Asian Cup in place of original host China after seeing off rival bids from South Korea and Indonesia, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced.
The continental championship was awarded to China in 2019 but the world's most populous country relinquished the rights earlier this year as it pursued a zero-COVID policy.
The AFC re-opened the bidding process and the three candidates were considered by the executive committee.
"Qatar's capabilities and track record in hosting major international sporting events and their meticulous attention to detail are well admired throughout the globe," AFC president Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said.
"With their existing world-class infrastructure and unrivalled hosting capabilities, we are confident that Qatar will stage a worthy spectacle befitting the prestige and stature of Asia's crown jewel."

INA Ezhimala's Indian Navy Sailing Championship 2022

Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala is conducting the Indian Navy Sailing Championship 2022 from October 18 to 21, 2022. The championship is being held at the state-of-the-art Marakkar Watermanship Training Centre in Kerala.
The mega sailing championship is being conducted under Indian Naval Sailing Association (INSA) at IHQ MoD (Navy). It is the largest intra-Navy sailing event in which nearly 100 yatchpersons from all three Indian Naval Commands, including 15 Officer Trainees of the Indian Naval Academy are participating.
Fearless sailors, both men and women, are to take part in Team Racing Format in Enterprise and Match Racing Format in Laser Bahia Classes to showcase their skills, team spirit and leadership qualities.

Jyothi Yarraji Becomes First Indian Woman to Run Sub-13s Hurdles

Jyothi Yarraji, an Indian sprinter made history in the women's 100m hurdles as she became the first Indian woman to run a sub-13s time to win the gold medal at the Nation Games 2022. Jyothi Yarraji broke her national record representing Andhra Pradesh by running the final in 12.79s. Earlier, Jyothi Yarraji won the women's 100m gold, leaving behind sprinters lime Dutee Chand and Hima Das.
The National Open Athletics Championships 2022 were the last senior domestic competition of the season which was held at the Kanteerava Stadium, Bangalore. There were more than 800 participants from across the country to compete in 47 medal events at the five-day meet. On October 19, 2022, the competition concluded. The events included race walking (men's and women's), pole vault, discus throw, long jump, shot put, heptathlon, hurdles, javelin throw, etc.

Ballon d'Or 2022: Karim Benzema, Alexia Putellas Clinch Top Honours

Real Madrid Star Karim Benzema walked away with the Ballon d'Or trophy in a ceremony held at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, France.
Bayern Munich's Sadio Mane finished as a runner up while Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City was at third spot.
Benzema became the first French player since Zinedine Zidane to win the top honour. Zidane had won this award back in 1998.
Barcelona's Alexia Putellas became the first to win two back-to-back Women's Ballon d'Or trophies in consecutive seasons.
Beth Mead, England's Euro 2022 winning star and top scorer at that tournament, finished as runners up, while Sam Kerr of Chelsea from Australia stood at third position.
Alexia won the award after an incredible 2021-22 seaon in which she helped Barca reach second consecutive Champions league final, scoring 11 goals in 10 matches and a total of 18 goals and 15 assists within 26 league matches.
The Ballon d'Or is an annual football award presented by French news magazine France Football since 1956. Between 2010 and 2015, in an agreement with FIFA, the award was temporarily merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year (founded in 1991) and known as the FIFA Ballon d'Or. That partnership ended in 2016, and the award reverted to the Ballon d'Or.

Aayan Khan, the Youngest Player in Men's T20 World Cup 2022

UAE's Aayan Khan, the 16-year-old all-rounder, is the youngest player to feature in the men's T20 World Cup. He was picked in the UAE XI for the team's first match of the T20 World Cup against the Netherlands at the Simonds Stadium in Geelong. He impressed in the U19 World Cup earlier this year with 93 and one for 13 in UAE's 82-run win over West Indies. Aayan was out for a seven-ball five against the Netherlands. He then bowled three overs for 15 runs and picked a wicket.
Aayan broke Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir's record. The left-arm quick played his first T20 World Cup when he was 17 years and 55 days old.
Notably: Netherlands' Stephan Myburgh, at 38 years and 230 days, is the oldest in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Hong Kong's Ryan Campbell played in the 2016 World Cup when he was 44 years and 33 days old.

Manish, Vaidehi win Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship

Manish Sureshkumar and Vaidehi Chaudhari won the men's and women's singles titles respectively in the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship at the DLTA complex, New Delhi.
In the women's final, Vaidehi cruised past Sai Samhitha Chamarthi 6-2, 6-0.
In the men's final, Manish Sureshkumar played with purpose and professionalism as he dismantled the challenge from Digvijay Pratap Singh 6-2, 6-3.

FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup: India Lose 0-5 to Brazil, End Campaign with All-loss Record

India ended their FIFA Women's Under-17 World Cup campaign with an all-loss record and without scoring a goal as they suffered a 0-5 defeat to Brazil in their last group match.
Debutants India had lost to USA (0-8) and Morocco (0-3) in their previous Group A matches. They finished last in the four-team group without any point while conceding 16 goals in the three matches.
USA, who beat Morocco 4-0 in Margao, topped the pool and qualified for the quarterfinals along with Brazil.

Pat Cummins Replaces Aaron Finch as Australia's New ODI Captain

Pace spearhead Pat Cummins was named as Australia's new ODI captain following Aaron Finch's retirement from the format last month.
Cummins beat the likes of Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell March and Alex Carey to be appointed as Australia's 27th ODI skipper.
David Warner was not considered for the job as his lifetime leadership ban still remains with Cricket Australia (CA) contemplating a change in its code of conduct.
CA confirmed that Cummins will lead Australia in next year's ODI World Cup in India.
According to CA, Cummins will become the first fast bowler to lead Australia's men's team in white-ball cricket.

India Wins Women's Asia Cup 2022

India maintained their dominance in the Women's Asia Cup with an eight-wicket demolition of a self-destructing Sri Lanka in the final, at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet, for their seventh title. Sri Lanka, who were playing their first tournament final in 14 years, imploded after opting to bat on a slow and turning pitch. They could only manage 65 for nine which India knocked off in 8.3 overs. Smriti Mandhana struck a sublime 51 not out off 25 balls. Despite the wickets of Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues, Smriti continued her blitzkrieg as she along with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, ran away with the win.

Rudrankksh Becomes 2nd Indian Shooter to Win 10m Air Rifle Gold

Rudrankksh Patil ended India's 16-year-long wait for a World Championship gold medal in the 10-metre rifle event. The 18-year-old, who broke into the senior Indian team at the start of the year, held his nerves to register a 17-15 win in the gold medal match against Italy's Danilo Dennis Sollazzo at the ISSF World Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
The last shooter to win a 10-m rifle gold in the World Championship was Olympics gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, who achieved the feat in the 2006 edition in Zagreb, Croatia. In the process, Patil also won India a quota place for the 2024 Paris Olympics. This was India's second Paris quota place in the sport. Bhowneesh Mendiratta had won a quota place in the men's trap event at the Shotgun World Championship in Osijek, Croatia.
