India to Set Up Research Reactor for Affordable Treatment of Cancer, Other Diseases

  • India will set up a research reactor in PPP mode for the production of medical isotopes.
  • This will produce medical isotopes and make available affordable treatment for cancer and other diseases.
  • The research reactor in public-private partnership (PPP) mode would use irradiation technology for food preservation - to compliment agricultural reforms and assist farmers.

Education Minister Launches Titles On Psycho-Social Impact Of Pandemic

  • Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' launched e-editions of titles on "Psycho-Social impact of pandemic & lockdown and how to Cope With".
  • The titles have been launched under the corona studies series published by National Book Trust (NBT) India.
  • The e-launch was followed by an interactive session with the researchers and authors of NBT study group.

A Novel Tool to Help Gain Deeper Insight into Parkinson's Disease

  • The Scientists of IIT Dhanbad and CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) have teamed up together to find a major cause of Parkinson's disease a solution.
  • Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease and so far, no cure has been found to heal the disease. The researchers of these institutes have found a technique to monitor the aggregation of ASyn protein.

NIT Kurukshetra Implements Enterprises Resource Planning (ERP), SAMARTH

  • Department of Higher Education, M/o Human Resource Development, has mission to provide quality education to students across all Universities & HEIs.
  • For this, M/o HRD has developed an e-Governance platform, SAMARTH (Enterprises Resource Planning) ERP, under National Mission of Education in Information and Communication Technology Scheme (NMEICT).
  • ERP, SAMARTH, is an Open Standard Open Source Architecture, Secure, Scalable and Evolutionary Process Automation Engine for Universities and Higher Educational Institutions. It caters to faculty, students and staff at a University/Higher Educational Institutions.
  • Now, the ERP, SAMARTH, has been implemented at National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra, a participating unit under the World Bank supported Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP). The objective of this initiative is to automate the processes of the Institute.

India Likely to Miss Global Nutrition Targets by 2025: WHO's Global Nutrition Report 2020

  • According to World Health Organization (WHO)'s Global Nutrition Report 2020, India is one among 88 countries to miss global nutrition targets by 2025 & is with highest rates of domestic inequalities in malnutrition.
  • India along with Nigeria & Indonesia are worst in disparities in stunting & the levels varied four-fold across communities.
  • The World Health Assembly in 2012 identified 6 nutrition targets for maternal, infant and young child nutrition to be met by 2025 they are:
  • Reduce stunting by 40% in children under 5; Reduce Anaemia by 50% in women of reproductive age(15-49 years); Reduce 30% in low birth weight; No increase in childhood overweight; Increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months up to at least 50%; Reduce and maintain childhood wasting to less than 5%.

BBMP, Bengaluru Launches "Pranavayu" To Track Oxygen Levels

  • The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru, Karnataka, has launched an initiative called "Pranavayu" as many COVID-19 patients have low oxygen levels that put them at risk of complications.
  • This initiative helps each individual to monitor blood oxygen levels and heart rates of patients showing influenza-like illnesses (ILI) in fever clinics.
  • Through this initiative, the BBMP doctors at Fever Clinics will monitor patients using an oximeter.
  • A pulse oximeter is a small device or probe that can be clipped onto a finger for the reading of blood oxygen level and heart rate.

Malnutrition Among Women, Children Continues to Paralyse Healthcare

  • Even as India struggles against the spread of Covid-19, the country's structural fault lines in health continue to be a cause of concern. Despite the government's efforts to fight malnutrition among women and children, 68% of under-five-year deaths in India can be attributed to child and maternal malnourishment, while 83% of neonatal deaths is due to low birth-weight and short gestation, a Lancet paper revealed.
  • The study done by India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative, a collaboration of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), and Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), ministry of health and family welfare other Indian institutions, is the first comprehensive estimate of district-level trends of child mortality. Another scientific paper child growth failure was published in EClinicalMedicine.

TVS Group, Sundaram Med, IIT-M Develop Low-Cost, Automated Respiratory Assists

  • The TVS group, Sundaram Medical Foundation and IIT-Madras have jointly developed a low-cost, automated respiratory assist device called The Sundaram Ventago.
  • This was done in collaboration with hospitals like Kauvery Hospital and the Madras Medical College and with guidance from global educational institutions like MIT-Boston.
  • It provides respiratory support to patients via the controlled and automated squeezing of a self-inflating or AMBU bag and includes functionalities to control respiratory rate (breaths per minute), tidal volume, pressure parameters and I:E ratios.

  • The Helpline Number 080 46 80 10 10 was launched through a virtual platform in New Delhi.
  • The helpline aims at providing Cognitive Emotional Rehabilitation Services to all University Students of Odisha.
