Infosys Launches Online Program for University Students
IT major Infosys announced the launch of 'Summer of Ideas' initiative for university students worldwide.
The global eight-week ideathon, powered by Infosys' digital learning platform Wingspan, will help the global student and academic community overcome the loss of learning opportunities as a result of the disruption caused by COVID-19.
The initiative will allow students access to Infosys mentorship and specially curated learning materials virtually.
The program will induct nearly 2,000 participants, divided into teams of five that will shape their ideas based on 10 themes related to emerging technologies.

Karnataka Bans Online Education for Children up to Class V
Karnataka announced a ban on online education by schools from pre-nursery to fifth grade responding to opinions shared by child psychiatrists, and educational experts.
The decision applies to all schools within Karnataka regardless of their affiliation to central or state boards, Education Minister S. Suresh Kumar announced. As for permitting online education from class 6 to class 10, the government has formed a panel of experts which will study the challenges and come up with a set of guidelines for schools. The committee will submit its report in 10 days.
The same committee will also study how primary schools can deploy technology (not online classes) to teach children up to class 5 in a way it is all-inclusive and reaches children even in remotest part of Karnataka.

India's Top Universities Drop in World Rankings
India has three universities among the top 200 global peers like last year, but most of them have slipped in rankings this time, according to the QS World University Ranking 2021.
As per the report by British ranking and education consulting agency Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay was ranked the best from India at 172, followed by Indian Institutes of Science (IISc) in Bangalore (185) and IIT Delhi at 193rd position.
IIT-Bombay dropped 20 positions from last year's world university ranking, IISc dropped by one position, and IIT-D's rank has slipped to 193rd from the previous rank of 182.
Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and Harvard University were the top three universities, respectively. California Institute of Technology in the US and Oxford University in the UK complete the top five in the list.

Scientists Develop a Rare-earth-based Magnetocaloric Material for Cancer Treatment
Scientists at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), an autonomous R&D centre of the Department of Science and Technology, have developed a rare-earth-based magnetocaloric material that can be effectively used for cancer treatment.
The magnetocaloric materials (certain materials in which application and removal of a magnetic field causes the materials to become warmer or cooler) developed by ARCI are being tested at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology (SCTIMST).

Eight Indian Institutes Enter Top 100 in THE Asia University Ranking
In the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Ranking launched in June 2020, Indian became the third most represented country with 8 institutes in the top 100. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) at 36th position on the list retains its top position in India.
Six IITs are featured in the top 100 of list along with Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT). The six IITs are IIT Ropar, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Indore, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IIT Roorkee.
In India around 489 universities were qualified for this year's ranking with 72 additional institutes as compared to 2019.
The most represented country was Japan with 110 institutes followed by China and India with 81 universities and 72 institutes respectively.
The ranking is based on the citations, industry income, international outlook, research and teaching.
