Mongabay Founder Wins Environmental Journalism Award

  • Mongabay founder and CEO Rhett A. Butler has been awarded a 2020 SEAL Environmental Journalism Award in recognition of his coverage of environmental issues for the website. The honor is presented by the SEAL (Sustainability, Environmental Achievement & Leadership) Awards, an environmental advocacy organization.
  • His fellow winners – at outlets ranging from The Guardian to The New York Times and The Washington Post – were selected based on each journalist's work, a data-driven analysis of the impact and reach of their articles, and the bringing of fresh perspectives and social relevance to environmental issues, the organizers said. Butler has been publishing on Mongabay since he founded it in 1999.
  • "I'm humbled to receive a 2020 SEAL Journalism Award," Rhett said. "I accept this honor on behalf of the Mongabay team and our network of contributors, who work tirelessly to deliver news and inspiration from nature's frontline."

Delhi Police Receives Best Marching Contingent Trophy-2021

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presented the trophies of best marching contingents of the Republic Day Parade 2021 in New Delhi on February 15, 2021. Jat Regimental Centre bagged the trophy of best marching contingent among the Tri-Services while Delhi Police was adjudged as the best marching contingent among the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and other auxiliary services.
  • Brigadier Adarsh K Butail and Subedar Major (Honorary Captain) Virendra received the trophy on behalf of the Jat Regimental Centre and Special Commissioner of Police Robin Hibu and Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat, Commander received the trophy on behalf of Delhi Police. The two contingents were adjudged on the basis of assessment by two panels of judges.

5 Indian-origin Persons, Feature in TIME Magazine's List of 100 Emerging Leaders

  • Five Indian-origin personalities, including Twitter's top lawyer Vijaya Gadde and U.K.'s Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, and Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad feature in TIME magazine's annual list of 100 "emerging leaders who are shaping the future".
  • The 2021 TIME100 Next, is an expansion of TIME's flagship TIME100 franchise of the most influential people in the world and highlights 100 emerging leaders who are shaping the future.
  • Other Indian-origin personalities on the list are Instacart founder and CEO Apoorva Mehta, doctor and Executive Director of nonprofit Get Us PPE Shikha Gupta and founder of nonprofit Upsolve, Rohan Pavuluri.
  • Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad is also on the list.

WCCB receives Asia Environmental Enforcement Award-2020

  • The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) has received the Asia Environmental Enforcement Award-2020 awarded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
  • Sharing the information, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said that WCCB getting the award twice in three years is a testimony of India's commitment towards ending wildlife crime.
  • Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) has been awarded this year under the Innovation category. Earlier, the Bureau had received the award in 2018 under the same category.

Manipur Doctor Gets Japan's Highest Honour

  • Japan has conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays decoration on Manipur physician and former president of state tourism forum, Dr Thangjam Dhabali Singh, to honour his contribution to strengthening ties between Japan and India, and Japan and Manipur. He was honoured in a simple event in Imphal.
  • "We appreciate that Dr Singh has earnestly dedicated himself to deepening the bonds between Japan and Manipur. During his tenure from 2012 to 2017 as president of Manipur Tourism Forum (MTF), Japan and Manipur rediscovered each other and got even closer, going beyond our historical ties," said a statement from Japanese ambassador Suzuki Satoshi.

Theodore Baskaran Wins Sanctuary Lifetime Service Award 2020

  • S. Theodore Baskaran who is a writer, a historian, a naturalist and an activist has won the Sanctuary Lifetime Service Award, 2020. The award was instituted by the Sanctuary Nature Foundation.
  • Theodore Baskaran was chosen for the award in the light of his dedication to the wildlife conservation. He won the award for his writing prowess in English and Tamil contributing towards the conservation discourse. He was also chosen for the award in the backdrop of inspiring the young naturalists.

JNU Professor Receives Award for Promoting Korean Studies in India

  • Jawaharlal Nehru University's professor Ravikesh has been awarded the South Korean Deputy Prime Minister's citation for his contributions and research in the field of Korean studies in India, the Korean Cultural Center in New Delhi announced. The award was jointly presented by the Deputy Prime Minister and South Korea's Department of Education.
  • Professor Ravikesh is the chairperson of Centre for Korean Studies, School of Language, Literature & Culture Studies at JNU and has over two decades of research experience in the field of Korean Studies, according to a press release by the university.
  • His core research includes Korean language teaching, modern Korean literature, aesthetics, literary translation, and aspects of e-Learning in teaching a foreign language.

Anthony Fauci Wins $1 Million Israeli Prize for 'Defending Science'

  • Dr. Anthony Fauci has won the $1 million Dan David Prize for "defending science" and advocating for vaccines now being administered worldwide to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The Israel-based Dan David Foundation named President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser as the winner of one of three prizes. It said he had earned the recognition over a lifetime of leadership on HIV research and AIDS relief, as well as his advocacy for the vaccines against COVID-19.
  • Fauci has served seven presidents and has been the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984.
  • The Dan David Prize, established in 2000, gives $1 million awards in three categories each year for contributions addressing the past, present and future.
