SERB Announces Women Excellence Award 2021

  • The SERB Women Excellence Award was announced on the occasion of International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2021.
  • Four young women fellows from the National Science Academies have been awarded for excelling in science and engineering.
  • The four young women are: Shobhna Kapoor, Antara Banerjee, Sonu Gandhi and Ritu Gupta.
  • The SERB Women Excellence Award will provide them a grant of Rs. 15 lakh.
  • The grant would be provided for a period of three years to the awardees in order to pursue their research ideas.
  • The SERB Women Excellence Award is given by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB). It is given in order to support the basic research in the frontier areas of science and engineering. This award was launched in 2013. It is a one-time award and is given to women scientists who are below 40 years of age. It is given to those women scientists who have received recognition from any of the National Academies like Young Scientist Medal, Young Associateship, etc.

Robert Irwin Wins the Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice Award

  • Robert Irwin, an Australian wildlife photographer, has won the first prize in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year People's Choice Award Contest. Robert won the award for the image titled 'Bushfire', which is the picture of the devastating Australian bushfire in 2020, he captured using a drone, near the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in Cape York, Queensland.
  • The image shows a line of fire burning in between the bushes, dividing it into parts.
  • Irwin's image was chosen from a shortlist of 25 finalists that received a total of 55,486 votes. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the largest wildlife photography competition in the world, organized by the Natural History Museum.

  • The Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence were announced in February 2021.
  • Lifetime Achievement Award was won by former HDFC Bank MD Aditya Puri.
  • Businesswoman of the year award was jointly won by Preetha Reddy, Vice-Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals and Suneeta Reddy, MD, Apollo Hospitals.
  • Emerging company of the year award went to ICICI Lombard General Insurance.
  • Business reformer of the year award was won by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.
  • Corporate citizen of the year award was won by Tata Consultancy Services.
  • Global Indian award was won by Piyush Gupta, CEO, DBS Group.
  • Entrepreneur of the year award was won by Adar Poonawalla Chief Executive Officer, Serum Institute of India.
  • Business Leader of The Year award was won by Pawan Munjal, Chairman, Hero MotoCorp.

'Writing with Fire' Wins Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival

  • "Writing with Fire", an Indian film chronicling the rise of Khabar Lahariya, India's only newspaper run by Dalit women, has won the audience award in the World Cinema Documentary category at the Sundance Film Festival 2021.
  • The festival is presented by Sundance Organisation, a non-profit that discovers and supports independent artists, and introduces audiences to their work.
  • The virtual award ceremony was remotely hosted by actor-comic Patton Oswalt.
  • "Writing with Fire", which also marks the feature debut of directors Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, follows this ambitious group of Dalit women -- led by their chief reporter, Meera -- as the team switches from print to digital in order to stay relevant.

India Society for Spices to Confer Sugandha Bharathi Awar

  • The Indian Society for Spices (ISS), located at the ICAR- Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) here, will present the Sugandha Bharathi and Sugandhasree awards during SYMSAC-2021, International Symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops.
  • Dr. P.N. Ravindran, plant breeder, author and writer, best known for his contributions in the field of spices research, development and documentation, has been selected for the Sugandha Bharathi Award. He was former director and project coordinator of the ICAR-IISR and a distinguished scientist who has authored spices-related books for many international publishers.
  • The ISS has been honouring outstanding achievements in the field of spices research and development with the Sugandha Bharathi Award once in four years. The awardees are selected for their lifetime contribution for the development and improvement of spices, aromatic crops and medicinal plants. The award consists of a gold medal and a citation.
