National Girl Child Day

The Centre will celebrate the "National Girl Child Day" on 24th January, which also coincides with the fourth anniversary of the "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" scheme, one of the Narendra Modi government's flagship programmes.
The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme — which aims to address skewed gender ratio as well as to empower young women — was launched in January 2015 in Panipat.

INA Veterans to Take Part in Republic Day Parade

Marching contingents led by women officers, the firstever participation of veterans from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army (INA) and some of the latest weapons of the Indian Army will be among the highlights of the Republic Day 2019 parade.
Increased participation of women at the 70th Republic Day parade would be reflected in an all-women contingent of Assam Rifles, a woman officer leading the Army Service Corps marching squad and an officer who will be the first and only woman to be a part of the Corps of Signals' motorcycle stunt team.
INA would be represented by four veterans for the first time, all aged between 95 and 100.
Among them, Bhagmal from Manesar, will be the oldest participant in the parade, to be led by Lt Gen Asit Mistry, general officer commanding, (headquarters) Delhi Area.
The army's M777 ultra-light howitzers and the K-9 Vajra artillery guns will be showcased at the parade for the first time.
A contingent of the Gorkha Brigade will also take part in the parade for the first time. The parade will feature a total of 16 marching contingents and an equal number of bands.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will be the chief guest at this year's Republic Day function.
Three Param Vir Chakra and five Ashok Chakra awardees will take part in the parade. States and different government departments will be represented by 22 tableaux, with the theme being the 150 birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The fly past at the parade will involve 18 fighter jets, eight transport planes and several helicopters.
One of the AN-32 transport planes taking part in the flying display will use aviation turbine fuel blended with 10% bio-jet fuel for the first time.

Ramaphosa to Visit India for Republic Day Celebration

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's visit to India as the state guest of honour at the Republic Day celebrations is expected to give fresh impetus to bilateral relations in areas as diverse as human resource development and defence.
Ramaphosa, who will be accompanied by nine ministers and a 50-member business delegation, will be making his first visit to India as head of state. He is the second South African president after late Nelson Mandela to be chief guest at the Republic Day parade.
During his two-day visit, Ramaphosa will have a meeting and hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on bilateral, regional and global issues.
Ramaphosa, along with Modi, will address the India-South Africa Business Forum on January 25 to boost trade ties.
He will deliver the GandhiMandela Freedom Lecture organised by the Indian Council of World Affairs as a part of celebrations of the 15th anniversary of the IBSA (India, Brazil, South Africa) Dialogue Forum.
Ramaphosa's visit is expected to boost bilateral ties that stagnated towards the end of the tenure of former president Jacob Zuma, who resigned last year after coming under a cloud over allegations of corruption linked to the Gupta brothers of Indian origin.
In the field of defence, South African major Denel is expected to make fresh forays following its removal from an Indian government blacklist last year.
The firm was barred from defence deals in 2005 following allegations that it had paid kickbacks to secure a deal to supply anti-material or bunker buster rifles.
Denel is currently eyeing deals to supply anti-material and assault rifles to the Indian military. Ramaphosa will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and President Ram Nath Kovind will host a state banquet for him. He will witness the Republic Day parade and attend the "At Home" hosted by Kovind before departing for South Africa.

Total Lunar Eclipse with Supermoon

The only total lunar eclipse this year and next came with a supermoon bonus.
The moon, Earth and sun lined up to create the eclipse, which was visible throughout North and South America, where skies were clear.
There won't be another until the year 2021. It was also the year's first supermoon, when a full moon appears a little bigger and brighter thanks to its slightly closer position.
The entire eclipse took more than three hours. Totality — when the moon's completely bathed in Earth's shadow — lasted an hour.
During a total lunar eclipse, the eclipsed, or blood, moon turns red from sunlight scattering off Earth's atmosphere.
In addition to the Americas, the entire lunar extravaganza could be observed, weather permitting, all the way across the Atlantic to parts of Europe.

Sunburn Music Festival To Return To Goa In Feb

After three years, electronic dance music festival Sunburn will be returning to Goa but in a different avatar. Percept Live, the wholly owned subsidiary of Percept Ltd, has announced a collaboration with Goa-based Klassique to co-promote all Sunburn events in the state.
Under this alliance, the first two-day event — Sunburn Klassique — will be held at Vagator beach from February 23.
Represented by Shailesh Shetty, Klassique will be responsible for all local logistics and permissions for Sunburn Klassique.

15th KK Luthra Memorial moot court

Delhi University's (DU) campus for law centre is set to host the 15th edition of its the K K Luthra Memorial moot court.
The theme of this year's moot court (mock court proceeding) is on the implications of money laundering.
Around 50 institutions from India and abroad are participating in the event. International teams from the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Zambia, Ethiopia and South Africa are among the participants in the event which is being organised in the memory of late senior advocate KK Luthra.
