World Wetland Day

  •  The national capital celebrated World Wetland Day on Saturday at the Yamuna Biodiversity Park (YBP) in north Delhi. The event saw hundreds of participants, including over 300 students from various colleges of Delhi University and other educational institutions, besides researchers, academicians and nature enthusiasts.
  • This year's theme was "Wetlands and Climate Change". Participants shared their experiences of change in environmental quality and increase in groundwater level after the creation of Yamuna Biodiversity Park.

World Wetland Day

  •  World Wetlands Day occurs annually on February 2nd, marking the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971.
  • Established to raise awareness about the value of wetlands for humanity and the planet, WWD was celebrated for the first time in 1997 and has grown remarkably since then. Each year, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community, have taken advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits.
  • Some of these benefits include: biologically diverse ecosystems that provide habitat for many species, serve as buffers on the coast against storms and flooding, and naturally filter water by breaking down or transforming harmful pollutants.

Martyrs' Day

  •  Martyrs' Day is an annual day observed by nations to salute the martyrdom of soldiers who lost their lives defending the sovereignty of the nation. The actual date may vary from one country to another. Here is a list of countries and Martyrs' Days.
  • Martyrs' Day (India), is observed on January 30, the anniversary of the assassination of Mohandas Gandhi in 1948.
  • Martyrs' day is also observed across the Indian state of Punjab on March 23, on the death anniversary of Bhagat Singh in 193. 30 January is the date observed at the national level.
  • The date was chosen as it marks the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1948, by Nathuram Godse.
  • On Martyr's Day the President, the vice president, the Prime Minister, the defence minister, and the three Service Chiefs gather at the samadhi at Raj Ghat memorial and lay wreaths decorated with multi-colour flowers.
  • The armed forces personnel blow bugles sounding the Last Post. The inter-services contingent reverse arms as a mark of respect.
  • A two-minute silence in memory of Indian martyrs is observed throughout the country at 11 AM.

Four-day Heritage Conservation Fest 

  •  A four-day cultural festival by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) will celebrate 35 years of heritage conservation by the organisation. 
  • Scheduled to take place from January 28-31, the 'INTACH Utsav' will showcase glimpses of its work and create awareness amongst the people for their heritage.
  • The Utsav will feature a variety of classical and folk music, dances, lectures, workshops, heritage walks and food stalls. A craft bazaar will simultaneously display the craft and textile heritage of the country.

70th Republic Day Celebration

  •  The 70th Republic Day celebrations were held at Rajpath, Delhi. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was the chief guest this year.
  • The ceremonial parade was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, vice president M Venkaiah Naidu, defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and other dignitaries.
  • After the national anthem, slain soldier Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra by President Kovind. The former militant-turned-soldier was awarded the country's highest peacetime gallantry honour for laying down his life fighting militants in Shopian in November 2018. Wani's wife and mother received the award.
  • For the first time, four Indian Indian National Army veterans—all above 95-years-old— participated in the parade. Assam Rifles also created history by fielding an all-women marching contingent led by Major Khusboo Kanwar for the first time.
  • While Captain Shikha Sharma was the first woman army officer to become a stunt rider, the audience's loudest cheers were reserved for the human pyramid formed by 33 daredevils on nine motorcycles.
