World Wildlife Day

  •  On 20 December 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided to proclaim 3 March, the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as World Wildlife Day, which was proposed by Thailand, to celebrate and raise awareness of the world's wild fauna and flora.
  • The theme for 2019 is  "Life below water: for people and planet".
  • This year the day is set to become historic for Indians as India is likely to become the first country in the world to have a King Cobra sanctuary.

World Civil Defence Day

  •  World Civil Defence Day, created by decision of the ICDO General Assembly in 1990, is celebrated every year on the 1st of March. This Day commemorates the entry into force of the ICDO Constitution as an intergovernmental organisation in 1972 and has two main purposes:
  1. Of bringing to the attention of the world public the vital importance of Civil Protection and of raising awareness of the preparedness for, and prevention and self-protection measures in the event of accidents or disasters;
  2. Of paying tribute to the efforts, sacrifices and accomplishments of all the national services responsible for the fight against disasters.

Zero Discrimination Day

  •  Zero Discrimination Day is an annual day celebrated by the UN and other international organisations.
  • The day aims to promote equality before the law and in practice throughout all of the member countries of the UN.
  • The day was first celebrated on March 1, 2014, and was launched by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé on 27 February of that year with a major event in Beijing.

National Science Day

  •  National Science Day is celebrated in India on 28 February each year to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman on 28 February 1928.
  • For his discovery, Sir C.V. Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
  • In 1986, the NCSTC asked the Government of India to designate February 28 as National Science Day.
  • On the occasion of the first NSD (National Science Day) (28 February 1987) NCSTC announced institution of the National Science Popularisation awards for recognising outstanding efforts in the area of science communication and popularisation.
  • The theme for 2019 is on "Science for the People, and People for the Science".

International Mother Language Day

  •  International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and promote multilingualism.
  • First announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, it was formally recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in a resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
  • The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh.
  • In Bangladesh 21st February is the anniversary of the day when Bangladeshis fought for recognition for the Bangla language.
