World Sleep Day

  •  World Sleep Day (the Friday before the northern hemisphere vernal equinox) is an annual event organised by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Sleep Society, formerly World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM), since 2008.
  • The goal is to celebrate the benefits of good and healthy sleep and to draw society's attention to the burden of sleep problems and their medical, educational, and social aspects, and to promote the prevention and management of sleep disorders.
  • It is estimated that sleep deprivation costs the US over $400 billion a year with Japan losing $138 billion, Germany $60 billion, the UK $50 billion, and Canada $21 billion.
  • The first World Sleep Day was held on 14 March 2008. 
  • The slogan for the 2019 World Sleep Day is 'Healthy Sleep, Healthy Aging'.

World Consumer Rights Day

  •  Every year 15th March is celebrated as the World Consumer Rights Day.
  • World Consumer Rights Day was inspired by President John F Kennedy, who sent a special message to the US Congress on 15th March 1962, in which he formally addressed the issue of consumer rights.
  • He was the first world leader to do so.
  • The consumer movement first marked that date in 1983 and now uses the day every year to mobilise action on important issues and campaigns.
  • World Consumer Rights Day is an annual international event that signifies celebration and solidarity in the international consumer movement, demanding that, consumer rights are to be respected and protected.
  • The event also gives a chance to protest against the market abuses and social injustices which undermine those rights.
  • This year the theme promoted is "Trusted Smart Products".

Anniversary of World Wide Web Celebrated

  •  Google celebrated 30 years of World Wide Web (WWW) with a doodle.
  • English scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the WWW in 1989 and wrote the first web browser in 1990.
  • Working at CERN, Switzerland, Berners-Lee laid out the basic concepts of the WWW in a proposal which included ideas like HTML, URL and HTTP.
  • The first web browser was released in 1991 -- first to the research institutions and then to the general public on the Internet in the same year.

International Women's Day

  • International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 every year. It is a focal point in the movement for women's rights.
  • After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women's Day on February 28, 1909 in New York, the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference suggested a Women's Day be held annually. After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.
  • The theme for 2019 International Women's Day 2019 is: 'Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change'.

National Security Day

  •  Since 1972 our country commemorates National Security Day on March 4 every year. The day has a huge significance.
  • It is celebrated to pay tribute and honour to our nonpareil security forces (including our Army Officers, guards, policemen, commandos) and others who play a major role in maintaining peace and security of our nation.
