National Panchayati Raj Day

  • National Panchayati Raj Day is the national day of Panchayati Raj System in India celebrated by Ministry of Panchayati Raj on 24 April annually.
  • Then Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh declared the first National Panchayati Raj Day on 24th April 2010.
  • This day marks the passing of Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992 that came into force with effect from 24 April 1993. The passage of 73rd Amendment Act is hailed as defining moment in history of democratic India as it permits states to take steps to organize village panchayats and provide them with necessary powers and authority necessary to facilitate them to function as units of self-government.

World Book Day

  •  World Book Day, also known as World Book and Copyright Day, or International Day of the Book, is an annual event the organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright.
  • World Book Day was first celebrated on 23 April 1995, and continues to be recognised on that day.
  • The original idea was of the Valencian writer Vicente Clavel Andrés as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes, first on 7 October, his birth date, then on 23 April, his death date.
  • In 1995 UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on 23 April, as the date is also the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as that of the birth or death of several other prominent authors.

Earth Day

  • Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day now includes events in more than 193 countries, which are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.
  • The theme for Earth Day 2019 is 'Protect Our Species'. It aims to draw attention to the rapid extinction of species across the world, which is directly linked to human activity which causes climate change, deforestation and pollution.

Civil Services Day

  • The Civil Service Day is celebrated on 21st April every year. The purpose for this day is to rededicate and recommit themselves to the cause of the people. It is observed by all Civil Services. This day gives civil servants the opportunity for introspection and thinking about future strategies to deal with the challenges being posed by the changing times.
  • On this occasion, all officers of Central and State Governments are honoured for excellence in public administration by the Prime Minister of India. The 'Prime Minister Award for Excellence in Public Administration' is presented in three categories. Under this scheme of awards instituted in 2006, all the officers individually or as group or as organisation are eligible.
  • The award includes a medal, scroll and a cash amount of ₹100,000 (US$1,400). In case of a group, the total award money is Rs. 500,000 (US$7,000) subject to a maximum of Rs. 100,000 (US$1,400) per person. For an organisation the cash amount is limited to Rs. 500,000 (US$7,000).

World Heritage Day

  •  The International Day for Monuments and Sites also known as World Heritage Day is an international observance held on 18 April each year around the world with different types of activities, including visits to monuments and heritage sites. 
  • The International Day for Monuments and Sites was proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites on 18 April 1982 and approved by the General Assembly of UNESCO in 1983.
  • The aim is to promote awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage of humanity, their vulnerability and the efforts required for their protection and conservation.
  • The theme for 2019 is Rural Landscapes
