World Telecommunication Day

World Telecommunication Day (WTD) has been celebrated annually on 17 May since 1969.
The date marks the anniversary of the founding of ITU on 17 May 1865, when the first International Telegraph Convention was signed in Paris.
In 1973, the event was formally instituted at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos, Spain.
Every year a topical theme is chosen and events celebrating that theme take place around the world.
With the growth in importance of information technology alongside telecommunications – especially the Internet – it was recognised that the topic also needed to be brought to public attention.
In 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) called upon the United Nations General Assembly to declare 17 May as World Information Society Day (WISD).
The aim was to focus on the importance of these technologies and the wide range of related social and economic issues that had been raised by the summit.
The UN General Assembly resolved in March 2006 that World Information Society Day (WISD) would indeed take place every year on 17 May.
Later in 2006, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, decided to combine both celebrations as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD).

International Day of Families

The International Day of Families is observed on the 15th of May every year. The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 with resolution A/RES/47/237 and reflects the importance the international community attaches to families.
The International Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.
The theme for 2019 International Day of Families is "Families and Climate Action: Focus on SDG13".

International Nurse Day

International Nurses Day (IND) is an international day observed around the world on 12th May (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth) of each year, to mark the contributions that nurses make to society.
The International Council of Nurses has celebrated this day since 1965.

Mother's Day

The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia.
St Andrew's Methodist Church now holds the International Mother's Day Shrine.
Her campaign to make Mother's Day a recognised holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died.
Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.
Anna Jarvis wanted to honour her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honour all mothers because she believed a mother is the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.
In 1908, the U.S. Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother's Day an official holiday.
However, owing to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, by 1911 all U.S. states observed the holiday, with some of them officially recognising Mother's Day as a local holiday (the first being West Virginia, Jarvis' home state, in 1910).
In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honour mothers.

National Technology Day

National Technology Day is observed every year on 11th of May in India, acting as a reminder of the anniversary of Shakti. Shakti is the Pokhran nuclear test which was held on 11th of May, 1998.
The day highlights the important role of Science in our daily lives and encourages students to embrace Science as a career option.
Various events are organised in different technical institutes and engineering colleges to mark the day.

World Laughter Day

World Laughter Day takes place on the first Sunday of May of every year.
The first celebration was on May 10, 1998, in Mumbai, India, and was arranged by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement.
