World Laughter Day

  •  World Laughter Day takes place on the first Sunday of May of every year.
  • The first celebration was on May 10, 1998, in Mumbai, India, and was arranged by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement.

World Press Freedom Day

  • The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day or just World Press Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • The theme for 2019 World Press Freedom Day is "Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections In Times of Disinformation".

International Workers' Day

  •  International Workers' Day, also known as Workers' Day, Labour Day in some countries and often referred to as May Day, is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement which occurs every year on May Day (1st May), an ancient European spring festival.
  • The date was chosen by a pan-national organisation of socialist and communist political parties to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on 4th May 1886.
  • The 1904 Sixth Conference of the Second International, called on all Social Democratic Party organisations and trade unions of all countries to demonstrate energetically on the First of May for the legal establishment of the 8-hour day, for the class demands of the proletariat, and for universal peace.
  • The first of May is a national, public holiday in many countries across the world, in most cases as "Labour Day", "International Workers' Day" or some similar name, although some countries celebrate a Labour Day on other dates significant to them, such as the United States, which celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday of September.

Gujarat Day

  •  The state of Gujarat was officially formed on 1 May 1960 but the idea was first floated in 1928 in a magazine called Kumar. 1st May is hence officially celebrated as Gujarat Day.
  • The concept of Mahagujarat was suggested nine years later by writer and freedom fighter Kanaiyalal Munshi during a 1937 meeting of the Gujarat Sahitya Sabha in Karachi.
  • A  political movement known as Mahagujarat Andolan sought the creation of the state of Gujarat for Gujarati and Kutchhi-speaking people.
  • The Mahagujarat Andolan was led by Indulal Yagnik.
  • President Rajendra Prasad, Vice-President Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru finally agreed on the formation of the two states on a linguistic basis. Thus, on 1 May 1960, Gujarat and Maharashtra came into being as two new states of India.

Maharashtra Day

  •  Maharashtra Day, commonly known as Maharashtra Diwas also referred to as Maharashtra Din is a state holiday in the Indian state of Maharashtra, commemorating the formation of the state of Maharashtra from the division of the Bombay State on 1st May 1960.
  • Maharashtra Day is commonly associated with parades and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history and traditions of Maharashtra.
  • The Golden Jubilee celebrations for Maharashtra Day were conducted on 1st May 2011 across Maharashtra.

Ayushman Bharat Diwas

  • Ayushman Bharat Diwas is celebrated across the country on April 30. The Ayushman Bharat programme seeks to provide easily available and affordable medical facilities in the remote parts of the country. The Scheme has the benefits cover of 5 lakh rupees per family per year. Through the scheme, the families belonging to poor and vulnerable population based on Socio-Economic Caste Census database will be benefited. A beneficiary will be allowed to take cashless benefits from any public and private empanelled hospitals across the country. The Ayushman Bharat has twin missions. The first is to create a network of Health and Wellness Centres to deliver comprehensive primary health care close to the community. In the second, it aims to provide insurance coverage to 40% of India's population for secondary and tertiary care, including hospitalization costs.

World Intellectual Property Day

  •  World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on 26 April. The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe".
  • April 26 was chosen as the date for World Intellectual Property Day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organisation entered into force in 1970.
  • The theme for 2019 World Intellectual Property Day is 'Reach for Gold: IP and Sports'.
