23 August: International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

The night of 22 to 23 August 1791, in Santo Domingo (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic) saw the beginning of the uprising that would play a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
It is against this background that the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is commemorated on 23 August each year.
This International Day is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples. In accordance with the goals of the intercultural project "The Slave Route", it should offer an opportunity for collective consideration of the historic causes, the methods and the consequences of this tragedy, and for an analysis of the interactions to which it has given rise between Africa, Europe, the Americas and the Caribbean.
International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition was first celebrated in a number of countries, in particular in Haiti (23 August 1998) and Goree in Senegal (23 August 1999).

23 August - European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism

European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism, also known as Black Ribbon Day in some countries, is an international day of remembrance for victims of totalitarian regimes, specifically Stalinism, Communism, Nazism and Fascism. It is observed on 23 August and symbolizes the rejection of "extremism, intolerance and oppression"
It was designated by the European Parliament in 2008/2009 as "a Europe-wide Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarianand authoritarian regimes, to be commemorated with dignity and impartiality" and has been observed annually by the bodies of the European
Union since 2009, 23 August was chosen to coincide with the date of the signing of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, a 1939 non-aggression pact between the USSR and Nazi Germany which contained a protocol dividing Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland into designated German and Soviet spheres of influence.

Solapur To Host First Ever Terry Towels Expo

The textile town of Solapur will host one of the world's biggest exclusive expos for terry towels to woo international buyers who will be able directly source from local manufacturers. This will be the first ever expo of its kind.
The local units supplying to the domestic and exports markets are collectively generating a sales revenue of ₹1,200 crore and the objective is to grow this revenue multifold by directly dealing with international buyers.
Organised by the Textile Development Foundation of Solapur in association with Global Network (International Trade Advisory) and supported by Ministry of Co-operative, Marketing and Textile, Maharashtra, the expo will showcase a variety of towels along with unique jacquard woven terry towels and bath linen products.

Modi Event In US Sold Out, 50K People Register

"Howdy, Modi!", the community event to be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United States has been sold out with over 50,000 people registering for the programme.
"Howdy", short for 'How do you do?', is a friendly greeting commonly used in southwestern United States.
Over 50,000 supporters have already registered for the mega community summit in September,2019 at the NRG Stadium.
The live audience will be the largest ever for an Indian Prime Minister in North America and also the largest for a foreign leader in the US other than Pope Francis.
PM Modi is scheduled to visit the US in September 2019 to attend the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, 2019 prior to which he will travel to Houston to meet the leading businesses, political and community leaders here in Houston, the fourth largest city with a population of over 130,000 Indian-Americans.
The summit, with the tagline of 'Shared Dreams, Bright Futures' will highlight the contributions of Indian-Americans to enrich American life as well as the key role it has played in strengthening relations between the two nations.

75th Birth Anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi

Sadbhavana Diwas is celebrated on 20 August every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
This day is observed to encourage the national integration, peace, affection and communal harmony among the Indian people of all religions.
On the occasion of Sadbhavana Diwas close family members, senior Congress party members pay homage to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by laying down garlands on Veer Bhoomi, where he was cremated.
This day is observed to encourage the national integration, peace, affection and communal harmony among the Indian people of all religions.
'Sadbhavana' in English language means goodwill and bonafide. Being as the youngest Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi's thought process was modern and different from others.

20 August - Indian Akshay Urja Day

Akshay Urja diwas is an awareness campaign about the developments of renewable energy in India, celebrated on August 20 every year since 2004.
The Indian Ministry for New & Renewable Energy Sources initiated Akshay Urja Day (Diwas) in 2004. The first function was organised at New Delhi in 2004 and 2005 followed repeated in Nagpur in 2006 and at Hyderabad in 2007 and Panchkula, Haryana in 2008.
The day commemorates the birthday of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
The energy such as Solar Energy, Wind energy, hydroelectrical power are few example of Akshay Urja. It is essential to develop way to use akshay urja or renewable energy more efficiently.
The main motive of Akshya urja Diwas is to make people aware that they have to think about the renewable energy (Akshya Urja) apart from tradition energy.

World Mosquito Day

World Mosquito Day, observed annually on 20 August, is a commemoration of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross's discovery in 1897 that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.
Ross is responsible for the annual observance, having declared shortly after his discovery that the day should be known as World Mosquito Day in the future.
The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine holds Mosquito Day celebrations every year, including events such as parties and exhibitions, a tradition dating back to as early as the 1930s.

19th August, 2019 - Afghanistan 100th Independence Day

The Afghan government has postponed celebrations to commemorate the 100th Independence Day of Afghanistan which was scheduled in the historic Dar-ul-Aman Palace.
Presidential spokesperson Sediq Sediqqi said the Secretariat tasked to organise the 100th Independence Celebrations of Afghanistan has postponed the event as per President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani's instructions in a bid to pay respect to families of deadly bombing attack victims in Kabul.

World Humanitarian Day observed on August 19

Bengal Mark 'I-Day' On August 18 Every Year

Independence Day came three days late in some areas of Bengal bordering Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan.
This little known episode of Indian history — the result of an error by the boundary commission — has since then been observed in parts of the state which celebrate Independence Day on August 18.
Cultural programmes are held to recall the three days when Bengal stood on the threshold of fresh communal strife in 1947 after being partitioned.

India Parade: Toronto To Ensure Safety

Canada's largest city have said they will "not tolerate" any violence or harassment as Toronto hosted the India Day Parade on August 18, 2019.
The parade attracts about 50,000 visitors annually mainly from the Indian diaspora. It showcases floats from India's various states and territories including Jammu and Kashmir and Indo-Canadian organisations.
Officials have been concerned over protests during the event this year particularly as pro-Khalistani groups, including the hardline Sikhs for Justice, which was recently banned in India, have joined forces with Kashmiri separatist groups after the abrogation of Indian Constitution's Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Indian Amy Emerges as Champions at 5th Army International Scout Masters Competition

The Closing Ceremony of the Fifth Army International Scout Masters Competition 2019 was held in Jaisalmer on 16 August 2019.
Honorable Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh was the Chief Guest.
The ceremony was attended by General Bipin Rawat, Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General SK Saini, Southern Army Commander, delegations of participating countries, members of the International Organising Committee and several civilian and military dignitaries.
The Defence Minister gave away the Champions Trophy to the winning Indian team, Runner's Up Trophy to Uzbekistan and the Second Runner's Up trophy to Russia.

Parsi New Year 2019

The Parsi New Year, also known as Navroz, is celebrated to mark the beginning of the new Iranian calendar. In Persian, 'Nav' means new, and 'Roz' stands for the day, this literally translates to 'new day'.
This tradition is believed to have begun over 3,000 years ago, and is observed by Iranians and the Parsi community around the world on 18 August every year, and most prominently in Maharashtra and Gujarat in India on account of the sizeable Parsi population.
