International Dance Day

  • International Dance Day is a global celebration of dance, created by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO.
  • The event takes place every year on 29 April, which is the anniversary of the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), the creator of modern ballet.
  • The day strives to encourage participation and education in dance through events and festivals held on the date all over the world. UNESCO formally recognize ITI to be the creators and organizers of the event.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work 28 April

  • Recognizing the great challenge that governments, employers, workers and whole societies are facing worldwide to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work will focus on addressing the outbreak of infectious diseases at work, in particular, on the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Concern is growing over the continuing rise in COVID-19 infections in some parts of the world and the ability to sustain declining rates in others.
  • Governments, employers, workers and their organizations face enormous challenges as they try to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and protect safety and health at work. Beyond the immediate crisis, there are also concerns about resuming activity in a manner that sustains progress made in suppressing transmission.
  • The World Day for Safety and Health at Work will aim to stimulate national tripartite dialogue on safety and health at work.


World Penguin Day 2020

  • World Penguin Day is celebrated on April 25, 2020. The annual northward migration of penguins is on or around April 25.
  • Penguins are a group of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the southern hemisphere, especially in Antarctica.
  • It is celebrated as World Penguin Day to create awareness about the threat to the existence of these flightless birds.
  • The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC), a non governmental organisation mentions that this day coincides with the annual northern migration of Adelie penguins of Antarctica.

World Immunization Week Is Celebrated From 24 To 30 April

  • World Immunization Week is celebrated from 24-30 April. It is celebrated in the last week of April by the World Health Organization (WHO). The observation of the week aims to promote the use of vaccines in order to protect people of all ages against disease. 
  • Immunization saves millions of lives every year and is recognized as one of the world's most successful and cost-effective health interventions. At present, over 20 million children in the world are not getting the vaccines they need.

International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day Is Observed On 26 April

  • International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day is observed on 26 April. The day aims to raise awareness of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and the risks of nuclear energy in general.
  • The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was built in 1977. It was built to help make electricity for the infrastructure of the Soviet Union (present Pripyat, Ukraine) to develop economic growth. On 26 April 1986, a reactor in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant experienced a catastrophic explosion and fire. 

Basava Jayanthi Was Celebrated On 26 April

  • Basava Jayanthi was celebrated on 26 April. It is an annual event that is celebrated in the honour of the birth of Vishwaguru Basaveshwara, the 12th-century philosopher and social reformer.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Lord Basaveshwara and greeted the people on the occasion of Basava Jayanthi. The day aims to spread Lord Basavanna's works and his ideas around the world to make the world a better place.
  • Basavanna was a 12th-century philosopher, Kannada poet, statesman, and a social reformer. He lived during the reign of the Kalachuri-dynasty king Bijjala I in Karnataka, India.

World Veterinary Day Was Observed On 25 April

  • The World Veterinary Day was observed on 25 April 2020. The day is observed on the last Saturday of April of every year.
  • The day provides an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of veterinarians to the health of animals and society. The theme for 2020 World Veterinary Day is "Environmental protection for improving animal and human health." The day is initiated by the World Veterinary Association (WVA).

  • Every April 26, World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated to learn about the role that intellectual property (IP) rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity.
  • World IP Day 2020 puts innovation – and the IP rights that support it – at the heart of efforts to create a green future. 

World Day Of Laboratory Animals 2020

  • The World Day of Laboratory Animals has been observed annually on April 24th with the associated "Lab Animal Week" (20th-26th April) since 1979 as a movement to end the sufferings of the animals that are used for testing in the laboratories around the world and replace them with the advanced scientific non-animal techniques. 
  • This World Day for Animals in Laboratories was established by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to educate the public and Governments about the animal tests and the alternatives for the past 40 years.
  • The product testing required the testing to be done on two mammal species, a rodent species and a non-rodent species during the testing the animals are burnt, blinded, scalded, poisoned, mutilated and starved.

International Delegate's Day

  •  In order to raise awareness of the role of the representatives and delegates of the Member States to the United Nations, the UN General Assembly has proclaimed 25 April as International Delegate's Day.
  • The 2020 International Delegate's Day is special for two reasons. First, 25 April 2020 is the first time that International Delegate's Day is observed. Second, the 2020 observance also marks the milestone seventy-fifth anniversary of the San Francisco Conference, an event that laid the foundations of the United Nations.

World Malaria Day 2020

  • World Malaria Day or WMD is observed on April 25 every year. The day aimed at taking urgent action in the control of the deadly disease. 
  • The theme of World Malaria Day 2020 is "Zero malaria starts with me."
