Mother's Day 2020

  • Every year we celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May to honors the Mothers of this world for the unconditional love, adoration and indispensable affection they bestow upon their children, and try to make them live this day to the fullest.
  • Though, Mother's Day 2020 was different as much of the world is placed inside homes due to lockdown in-place to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus.
  • The first Mother's Day was celebrated in West Virgina, USA in 1908, when a school teacher Anna Jarvis organised a Memorial Service at St. Andrew's Methodist Church commemorating the immaculate contribution of her mother in her life, three years after she had passed away in 1905.

Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Victims of WWII is Observed on 8-9 May

  • The United Nations (UN) has a two-day global observance that occurs on May 8 and 9 each year. It is known as the "Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War".
  • Many memorials are dedicated to those who sacrificed their lives during World War II.

World Red Cross Day is Observed on 8 May

  • World Red Cross Day is celebrated on May 8 every year.
  • This date marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, who is the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
  • He is also the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He was born on 8 May 1828.

International Day of the Midwife 2020

  • The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) celebrates the International Day of Midwives on May 5. The day is observed to spread awareness about the status of midwives and the essential care they provide to mothers and their newborns.
  • For the year 2020, the International Day of Midwives 2020 theme was 'Celebrate. Demonstrate. Mobilise. Unite'. The Confederation aims to stress on how midwives and women can jointly 'mobilise and unite toward a shared goal of gender equality'.

  • Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances,Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh participated in the Bamboo Conclave through Video Conference.
  • The aim of the conference was to discuss the importance of Bamboo, which will provide an opportunity for India to emerge as an economic power post COVID-19.

World Press Freedom Day 2020

  • World Press Freedom Day popularly known as World Press Day is one of the calendar events planned, organised and promoted by the United Nations, observed annually on May 3.
  • The day is celebrated to raise awareness regarding the importance of freedom of the press. The day is reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.
