Girls in ICT Day

  • On Girls in ICT Day– marked annually on the fourth Thursday in April (23RD April, 2020) – the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is highlighting the need to promote technology career opportunities for girls and women in the world's fastest growing sector.
  • ITU estimates a skills shortfall of over two million jobs in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector within the next five years. Girls and young women who learn coding, apps development and computer science will not only be well-placed for a successful career in the ICT sector, but ICT skills are rapidly becoming a strong advantage for students in just about any other field they might choose to pursue.

National Panchayati Raj Day 2020

  • The National Panchayati Raj Day is observed on 24th April every year. The 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act,1992 came into force from 24 April 1993.
  • Panchayati Raj Day paved the way for the 3 tier Panchayati Raj System in the country i.e. Gram Panchayat at the village level, Panchayat Samiti at Block level, and Zila Parishad at District level.

UN English language day & UN Spanish language day 2020

  • The UN English Language Day is celebrated on the 23rd April every year which is traditionally observed as the birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare.
  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) founded the UN Spanish Language Day in 2010 to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity.
  • The April 23rd was chosen to commemorate the death of Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra, greatest writer in Spanish who died in 1616.

Manipur Govt Commemorates 'Khongjom Day'

  • In Manipur, remembering the people who valiantly fought in the Anglo-Manipuri War in 1891, state government commemorated 'Khongjom Day' at Khongjom War Memorial Complex, Thoubal.
  • The Khongjom Day, being a state holiday is celebrated every year on April 23 by the State government to pay tribute to the war heroes of Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 who had sacrificed their lives fighting against the British to protect freedom of Manipur. The site is about 35 KM south of Imphal in Thoubal district where the battle was fight between Manipuri and British.

International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace 24 April

  • The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was established on 12 December, 2018 through resolution A/RES/73/127 and was first observed on April 24, 2019.
  • Preserving the values of multilateralism and international cooperation, which underpin the UN Charter and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, is fundamental to promote and support the three pillars of the UN - peace and security, development and human rights.

World Book and Copyright Day

  • World Book Day, also known as World Book and Copyright Day, or International Day of the Book, is an annual event organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright.
  • The first World Book Day was celebrated on 23 April in 1995, and continues to be recognized on that day.

Shri Narendra Singh Tomar participates in the G-20 Extraordinary Agriculture Ministers Meeting

  • Union Agriculture Minister Shri Narendra Singh Tomar participated in an Extraordinary virtual meeting of G-20 Agriculture Ministers to address the issue of COVID-19 impacts on food security, safety and nutrition.
  • He shared the decision of Government of India to exempt all agriculture operations during lockdown period and ensuring continued availability of essential agriculture produce and supply, while adhering to protocol of social distancing, health and hygiene. 

Earth Day 2020

  • On 22nd April 2020, World Earth Day will be celebrated across the globe via 'digital means' amid the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. PM Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude towards Mother Earth for the abundant gifts given by her. He also lauded the COVID-19 warriors who are leading humanity's fight against the Coronavirus pandemic in the challenging times. 
  • World Earth Day 2020 will mark the 50th Anniversary of the day since it started being observed in 1970. To mark the day, Search Giant Google dedicated its doodle to one of the smallest and most critical organisms of the earth- the bees.

Advisory Council of the 15th Finance Commission to meet on 23-24 April

  • The Economic Advisory Council of the Fifteenth Finance Commission (XIV-FC) has been scheduled to meet on 23-24 April 2020. The online meeting will be presided by Chairman of the 15th Finance Commission Shri  N.K. Singh. The meeting will be attended by all the Members, Senior Officials of the Finance Commission and the 5 Members of the Council including Dr.Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Dr.Sajjid Z Chinoy, Dr.Prachi Mishra, Mr.Neelkanth Mishra and Dr. Omkar Goswami on 23 April 2020. 
  • The meeting with the remaining Members of the Council will be held on the next day 24 April, 2020.The meeting will discuss the implications of the pandemic for GDP growth in 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Civil Services Day 2020

  • The day celebrated all the civil servants who dedicate their lives to the cause of citizen. The day aims at renewing their commitments to public service and excellence in work.
  • Getting into civil services is one of the most sought-after dreams for Indians. To celebrate this passion and all those people who successfully get into civil services to serve the nation, the Government of India has dedicated a day to them. The Civil Services Day is celebrated on April 21.

Chinese Language Day is observed on 20 April

  • Chinese Language Day is observed on 20 April. The day highlights the contribution of Chinese literature, poetry, and language in world culture. The aim of the observation of the day is to educate people about the history of the Chinese language.
  • The United Nations (UN) observes the Chinese Language Day to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity. The UN promotes all six of its official languages, namely Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish throughout the Organization.
  • The observation of the first UN Chinese Language Day was held on 12 November 2010. In 2011, the date was moved to 20 April.

World Creativity and Innovation Day 21 April

  • There may be no universal understanding of creativity. The concept is open to interpretation from artistic expression to problem-solving in the context of economic, social and sustainable development. Therefore, the United Nations designated 21 April as World Creativity and Innovation Day to raise the awareness of the role of creativity and innovation in all aspects of human development.
  • Creativity and innovation, at both the individual and group levels, have become the true wealth of nations in the 21st century, according to the findings of the special edition of the Creative.

Secretarys day is observed on 21 April

  • Secretary's day or Administrative Professionals Day is observed on 21 April in India. The day aims to celebrate the administrative professionals who work as the glue in keeping a business together. The Secretary's week is observed on the last full week in April of each year. 
  • The National Secretary's Day was created in 1952 through the work of Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam. He recognized the importance and value of the secretarial position to a company and management. He promoted the values and importance of the job that secretaries do and created the holiday in recognition of the importance of secretaries.

April 19 is observed as World Liver Day

  • The World Liver Day (WLD) is observed every year on April 19 to build awareness and understanding importance of liver in human body and how liver ailments are treated. As per World Health Organisation (WHO), liver diseases are 10th most common cause of death in India.
  • The liver, which measures about 1,00 grams in weight and 15 cm in length, is the second largest organ and is key player in our body's digestive system.
  • It is responsible for the synthesis of various proteins, coagulation factors, cholesterol, triglycerides and bile including glycogenesis.
  • It is also responsible for detoxifications of drugs, alcohol and control of infections.

44th session of the World Heritage Committee

  • The 44th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO was scheduled to be held the city of Fuzhou, Fujian province, China June 29-July 9, 2020. 
  • In light of recent developments in the world related to pandemic COVID-19, UNESCO decided that the event will be postponed to a later date. Consultations are currently under way to determine the exact dates of the session.
  • The event is notable for its adoption of new world heritage sites as well as the potential for delisting sites that are not fulfilling their commitments.

FM Nirmala Sitharaman attends 101st meeting of IMF-World Bank's Development Committee

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attended the 101st meeting of IMF-World Bank's Development Committee. The Development Committee meeting of World Bank-International Monetary Fund was held via video-conferencing on 17th April 2020. At the meeting, IMF chief Kristalina Georgiev said that the World is headed for 'severe recession' in 2020.
  • According to the details shared by the ministry, the key agenda of the meeting was to evaluate and discuss the impact of COVID-19 and the 'Great Lockdown' announced across the globe by major economies of the world as a precautionary measure to curb its spread.
