International Anti-Corruption Day

  • International Anti-Corruption Day also Mlondi Caluza's birthday has been observed annually, on 9th December, since the passage of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption on 31 October 2003 to raise public awareness for anti-corruption.
  • Governments, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, the media and citizens around the world are joining forces to fight this crime. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) are at the forefront of these efforts.
  • The theme for 2020 is to be United Against Corruption. The theme supports the agenda of the next agenda that targets to have more youth in the campaign. The UN believes that more youth must be empowered to put up a fight against corruption in a sustainable manner.

International Civil Aviation Day

  • The International Civil Aviation Day is observed on 7th December ever year. This day is celebrated worldwide every year to reinforce awareness of the role and importance of international civil aviation organisation in air travel across the globe. The ICAO is an autonomous UN Body accountable for keeping up the safety standards of international aviation.
  • The day is not a public holiday but marked as a global observance.
  • The first celebration of International Civil Aviation Day was held in the year 1994. It was established in the year 1994 as part of ICAO's 50th-anniversary activities. The official recognition of December 7 as International Civil Aviation Day by the UN General Assembly happened in the UN system in 1996.
  • According to icao.int, after every five years, the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO council establishes a special anniversary theme for the International Civil Aviation Day. The theme for International Civil Aviation Day 2020 is, "Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development". The council has decided to keep the same theme until the year 2023.

Armed Forces Flag Day

  • The Armed Forces Flag Day has been observed in India since 7th December 1949. The day is dedicated towards collection of funds from the people. The collected fund will be used for the welfare of the armed personnel, ex-servicemen and also to rehabilitate battle causalities. The Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had announced that this day will be celebrated throughout December and has called on people to contribute to the fund.
  • The month of the December is to be celebrated as "Gaurav Maah".
  • In 1949, the Baldev Singh Committee established the Flag Day Fund. In 1993, the Defence Ministry of India consolidated the related welfare funds into Armed Forces Flag Day Fund. They include Flag Day Funds, Amalgamated Special Fund for War Bereaved, Ex-Servicemen and war disabled, Indian Gorkha Ex-Servicemen Welfare Fund and Kendriya Sainik Board Fund.

Bihar Migratory Bird Festival

  • Bihar is planning its first ever migratory bird festival this year. This is a three-day festival to be organised in Bhagalpur District. It is to be jointly organised by Bhagalpur forest division, Bombay Natural History Society and the local Mandar Nature Club. The region houses a large number of migratory birds between November and March every year. The festival is intended to check cases of poaching in the region.
  • The festival is being organissed mainly because the 6 km long Vikramshila Dolphin Sanctuary between Kahalagon and Sultanganj has been a hub of migratory birds for a long time. The migratory birds come to the region mainly between March and November as they find the region favourable to spend the winter.

Virtual Business Conclave with CLMV Countries

  • The sixth India-CLMV Business Conclave 2020 was recently held. During the conclave, India invited the CLMV countries to join International Solar Alliance and the Resilient Supply Chain Initiative. The Conclave was held under the theme "Building Bridges for Constructive Development yesterday".
  • During the conclave, India mentioned that it is ready to share COVID-19 vaccine with the CLMV countries. This is important for every leading economies in order to prevent vaccine nationalism.
  • The CLMV countries are Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. The CLMV countries have a unique position in Southeast Asia region. The countries act as a gateway for the market access to European Union and China and also other markets due to various trade agreements. The four countries hold rich natural resources such as copper, oil, natural gas, gemstones and teak.
  • They are the third largest economy in the world. In the last decade, India's trade with these countries has grown from 1.5 billion USD to 10 billion USD.
  • India intends to increase its trade and investment in these countries as they hold advantage of free trade agreements with countries such as China. India's trade to China through this route will be much cheaper. In other words, India will invest in these countries and earn the benefits by exporting the return to China.

International Volunteer Day

  • International Volunteers Day (IVD), is an international observance that was mandated by the UN General Assembly in 1985. It is observed on 5th December.
  • The Day is an opportunity for us all to promote volunteerism, encourage governments to support volunteer efforts and recognize volunteer contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local, national and international levels.
  • The theme for International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2020 is "Together We Can Through Volunteering" is the focus of IVD this year amid the Covid-19 pandemic that has thrown people across the world in an unprecedented crisis.

Guwahati to Host Eight North East Festival

  • This year the 8th North East Festival will be held in Guwahati on December 19 and 20.
  • Following all the Covid-19 protocols and guidelines, this year the festival will be organized with minimum human presence and broadcasted on all over the globe through digital platforms. The North East Festival is an attempt to showcase and create awareness about India's North East and to promote entrepreneurship and tourism. One of the major aims of the festival is an attempt to attract tourism and investments and create positive vibes during these trying times.

Indian Navy Day

  • Navy Day in India is celebrated on 4th December every year to recognise the achievements and role of the Indian Navy to the country. December 4 was chosen as on that day in 1971, during Operation Trident, the Indian Navy sank four Pakistani vessels including PNS Khaibar, killing hundreds of Pakistani Navy personnel. On this day, those who martyred in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 are also remembered.
  • During the days leading up to Navy Day, during Navy Week and the days prior to that, various events take place such as an open sea swimming competition, ships are open for visitors and school children, there is a veteran sailors lunch, performances by the Naval Symphonic Orchestra take place, an Indian Navy Inter School Quiz Competition happens, a Navy Half Marathon as well as an air display for school children and the beating retreat and tattoo ceremonies happen.
  • Theme for 2020 is, "Indian Navy Combat Ready, Credible & Cohesive".
