World Day of the Handicapped

International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed on 3rd December is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. It has been observed with varying degrees of success around the world. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. It was originally called "International Day of Disabled Persons" until 2007. Each year the day focuses on a different issue.
UNESCO marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with a week-long programme from 25 November to 3 December 2020 under the theme: "Building back better: towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World".

Ninth Edition of International Sand Art Festival

The ninth edition of the International Sand Art Festival has begun at the Chandrabhaga Beach of Konark in Odisha's Puri district with adherence to government prescribed Covid-19 protocols.
About 70 artists from across the country are set to take part in the much-awaited festival that provides a platform for both national and international sand artists to showcase their talent.
The last few years of the festival saw enthusiastic participation from artists from countries like the United States, Russia, Singapore and Italy. This year, however, international artists will not be participating due to the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic.
Sudarsan Pattnaik, world-renowned sand artist and Padmashree Awardee, has been appointed as Chief Curator of the festival.
Artists create sculptures based on relevant themes like environment, culture and national and international affairs. This year, the main themes of the sculptures are 'Environment' and 'Covid-19'.
Every year, the festival is celebrated with great fervour in the first week of December as part of the Konark Dance Festival that is organised during the same time.

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery an international day is a yearly event on December 2, organised since 1986 by the United Nations General Assembly.
The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery marks the date of the adoption, by the General Assembly, of the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others. Today, the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, in fact recalls the date of the adoption of this first Convention to fight human trafficking by the United Nations General Assembly.
The focus of this day is on eradicating contemporary forms of slavery, such as trafficking in persons, sexual exploitation, the worst forms of child labour, forced marriage, and the forced recruitment of children for use in armed conflict.

National Pollution Control Day

Every year, India marks the National Pollution Control Day on December 2. The day is observed in the memory of the people who lost their lives in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
The National Pollution Control Day is celebrated in India to make the citizens aware of laws that exist in India that help to contain pollution.
This year marks the 36th anniversary of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, listed by the International Labour Organisation as among the world's major industrial accidents in the last century.
Among the acknowledged objectives of the day is to educate people on the management and control of industrial disasters, prevent pollution caused by industrial processes or human negligence and create awareness about the importance of pollution control laws.

World AIDS Day

Every year, on 1st December, the world commemorates World AIDS Day. People around the world unite to show support for people living with and affected by HIV and to remember those who lost their lives to AIDS. World AIDS Day was first conceived in August 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland. It was founded in 1988.
World AIDS Day is one of the eleven official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organisation (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunisation Week, World Tuberculosis Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Malaria Day, World Hepatitis Day, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, World Patient Safety Day and World Chagas Disease Day.
All the World AIDS Day campaigns focus on a specific theme and this year's (2020) theme is "Global solidarity, shared responsibility".

PM Narendra Modi Participates in Dev Deepawali Mahotsav in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the 'Dev Deepawali Mahotsav' in Varanasi and congratulated the people of Kashi for getting back the stolen Mata Annapurna's idol.
The idol of Mata Annapurna was stolen from Kashi more than 100 years ago.
PM Modi lit the customary first 'diya' at the Raj Ghat to mark the beginning of the celebrations that are held on every 'poornima' of the Hindu month of Kartik. He was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adiyanath.

International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed by the United Nations on or around 29 November each year, in accordance with General Assembly mandates contained in resolutions 32/40 B of 2 December 1977, 34/65 D of 12 December 1979, and subsequent resolutions adopted under agenda item "Question of Palestine."
The date of 29 November was chosen because of its meaning and significance to the Palestinian people. On that day in 1947, the General Assembly adopted resolution 181 (II), which came to be known as the Partition Resolution.

Nineteenth Meeting of the Council of the Heads of Government of SCO

China announced that Premier Li Keqiang will attend the 19th meeting of the council of the heads of government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states to be held under India's chairmanship.
India will host the virtual meeting of the Heads of the Government of the eight-member bloc on November 30.
Li and other leaders will hold in-depth communication and exchange on deepening SCO cooperation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
They will also discuss measures to enhance economic, trade, investment, production capacity, connectivity, culture and people to people cooperation, push national economic recovery, improve people's livelihood and promote faster and better development of SCO.
