Sea Trials of 1st Sea Sortie of 5th Scorpene Submarine 'Vagir' Begins
The Indian Navy's brand-new submarine, the fifth of the six French-designed Scorpene-class submarines named "Vagir", sailed out on its first sea sortie and will now undergo rigorous trials before it is delivered to the Navy later this year. The submarine-designated "Yard 11879" during its construction by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in collaboration with the Naval Group of France will be named "Vagir" after it is commissioned into service.

G. A. Srinivasa Murthy is Director of DRDL
Senior scientist G. A. Srinivasa Murthy was appointed director of Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Hyderabad. He joined DRDL in the year 1987 and made significant contributions in the area of structural dynamics, ground resonance testing, electrical integration and checkout for various projects of the missile complex.
G. A. Srinivasa Murthy completed his BE in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Andhra University in 1986 and pursued his ME in Digital Systems from Osmania University in Hyderabad.

Maj Gen Korpal is Judge Advocate General of Army
Major General Vijay Kumar Korpal was appointed as the Judge Advocate General (JAG) of the Army. He is the chief legal adviser to the Army Chief and be responsible for the functions of the Army's legal department.
Prior to this, he was serving as the Deputy Judge Advocate, Headquarters Eastern Command at Kolkata. He took over from Maj Gen Praveen Kumar. Maj Gen Korpal belongs to Jalandhar and is an alumnus of DAV College, Jalandhar.

Bharat Dynamics Signs contract with Indian Army for supply of Konkurs Anti-tank Missiles
Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and the Indian Army signed a contract worth Rs. 3,131.82 crore for the manufacture and supply of Konkurs-M anti-tank guided missiles.
The contract, which was signed in New Delhi, will be executed in three years.
Bharat Dynamics has augmented its manufacturing capacity to meet the domestic as well as overseas demand for Konkurs-M. As a part of its global outreach, BDL is also offering Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, Nag, Milan-2T, and Amogha, in addition to Konkurs M, for export.
Konkurs-M is a second generation, mechanised infantry anti-tank guided missile, to destroy armoured vehicles equipped with explosive reactive armour. The missile can be launched either from the BMP-II tank or from a ground launcher. It has a range between 75 to 4000 metres.
India Successfully Flight-tests Marine Version of Rafale for INS Vikrant
The marine version of the French-made Rafale fighter jet was successfully flight-tested at a shore-based facility in Goa where conditions similar to that on the indigenously-developed aircraft carrier INS Vikrant were simulated.
The Rafale-M is pitted against the US-made Super Hornet -- both of which are being evaluated for a possible purchase by the Indian Navy for deployment on the 44,000-tonne INS Vikrant that is undergoing trials in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal for likely commissioning in August.
Lt Gen GAV Reddy is New Defence Intelligence Agency Head
Lieutenant General GAV Reddy was appointed as the new head of the Defence Intelligence Agency. General Reddy succeeded Lt Gen KJS Dhillon. Lieutenant General KJS Dhillon retired after serving in various strategic positions during his 39-year career in the Indian Army.
The Director-General of the Defence Intelligence Agency is the head of the organisation and is among the principal advisors on intelligence to the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff. The post of the director general is held on a rotation basis between the three Armed services. The first Director-General of the DIA was Lt Gen Kamal Davar, former director-general of the Indian Army's Mechanised Forces.

Lt Gen Pande Takes Charge as Army Vice Chief
The Indian Army got a new Vice Chief, besides new Northern Army Command and Eastern Command chiefs.
Lt Gen Manoj Pande, Eastern Army Commander, moved to the Army Headquarters as the new Vice Chief of the Army.
Lt Gen YK Joshi, the Northern Army Commander and one of the senior-most generals after the Army Chief, superannuated. Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi took over as the new Northern Army Commander.
Lieutenant General R. P. Kalita was appointed as the new Eastern Army Command chief in Kolkata.
Lt Gen Joshi, who retired, is one of heroes of the Kargil conflict. Then a Lt Col, he was commanding the 13 battalion of the J&K Rifles. The battalion captured Point 5140, that is at a height of 16,863 ft and the highest occupied point on the Tololing ridge facing Gilgit Baltistan in Pakistan.
