India Gets First Maritime Security Coordinator

Former vice Chief of Navy Vice Admiral G. Ashok Kumar, who retired last year, was appointed as the country's first National Maritime Security Coordinator (NMSC).
Proposed after the 26/11 terror attacks, the NMSC will be part of the National Security Council Secretariat, and will report to National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.
As the NMSC, Kumar will have the responsibility of coordinating between all the agencies involved in maritime security and maritime civil issues as well. He will also be tasked with improving the country's blue economy needs. He will look at all aspects of maritime security, and will be the nodal point for all issues related to it.

India, Philippines to Expand Ties in Defence, Maritime

India and the Philippines agreed to further strength their engagement in counter-terrorism, defence and maritime security, covering defence capabilities as well as military training and capacity building.
These were the key takeaways of External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar's visit to Manila.
This was the first high-level contact between the two countries after the landmark $375 million deal to sell Brahmos missile system to the Philippines.

BHEL Bags Order to Supply Compact Heat Exchanger Sets for Tejas Aircraft

State-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) bagged an order from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd to supply compact heat exchanger sets for 83 LCA Tejas MK1A aircraft.
The order envisages manufacturing, assembly, testing and supply of compact heat exchangers to be fitted in the light combat aircraft, Tejas, being manufactured by HAL.
The BHEL's Heavy Plates and Vessels Plant (HPVP), Visakhapatnam is the sole supplier of heat exchangers for LCA Tejas to HAL since 1996.

India Set for Biggest Naval Exercise at Visakhapatnam

In what will be a show of diplomatic heft, India will be hosting the largest naval exercise involving more than 45 countries.
The naval exercise "MILAN 2022" is scheduled to be held in two phases from February 26 to March 4 at Visakhapatnam. The sea phase will commence on March 1 and will include submarine hunting at sea, planes, copters and warships and submarines will be involved in these war games in the Bay of Bengal.
The theme 2022 is "Camaraderie — Cohesion — Collaboration" which aims to promote collective responsibilities of maritime security for ensuring safe and secure seas.
The exercise in conducted once in two years and the one in 2020 was cancelled amid Covid fear.

9th India-Sri Lanka Army-to-Army Staff Talks

The ninth edition of the Army to Army Staff Talks (AAST) between delegations from the Indian Army and Sri Lankan Army were held in Pune with an aim to bolster bilateral defence ties between two countries who are neighbours in the strategically significant Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The talks focused on further strengthening defence cooperation engagements including training and exchanges in the fields of sports and culture.
The first edition of the talks was held back in 2011, have since focused on defence cooperation, training, joint military exercises and exchanges in other areas. These annual talks alternately held in India and Sri Lanka also include guest delegations' visits to various places of interest. The Sri Lankas delegation also visited various ket defence establishments in Pune.

Myanmar and Pakistan in Arms Deal, Guided by China

Pakistan's military partnership with India's eastern neighbour Myanmar is gathering momentum with a senior level military delegation from the Directorate of Military Procurement from the SE Asian country scheduled to visit Pakistan for pre-shipment inspection of arms.
Myanmar military is planning to purchase 60 & 81 mm mortars, M-79 grenade launchers and Heavy Machine Guns from Pakistan and a senior level delegation is planning to visit to inspect the products ahead of their shipment.
Myanmar is also eyeing to purchase Air to Surface missiles from Pakistan. These missiles are for their JF-17 fighter aircraft. Myanmar cannot directly purchase these missiles from China due to a ban imposed by Beijing.
