Indian Navy Hones Anti-submarine Warfare Skills in Exercise Sea Dragon

An Indian Navy P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft participated in multinational Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Exercise Sea Dragon-22 at Guam in the U.S. that saw the participation of Quad countries, Canada and South Korea. The two-week exercise began on January 5 and concluded on January 20.
The exercise was aimed to enhance interoperability among participating nations by evolving common tactics in response to emerging traditional and non-traditional security challenges in maritime domain.
Naval aircraft from the U.S., India, Japan, Canada, Australia and South Korea – which included P8A, P8I, P1, CP140 Aurora and P3C Orion maritime reconnaissance aircraft practised high-end ASW skills. "The aircrew also undertook professional interaction with other participants from friendly foreign countries," the Navy stated.
Sea Dragon is an annual, multi-national high-end exercise hosted by the U.S. Navy.

BSF: Operation Sard Hawa

The Border Security Force, BSF launches Operation Sard Hawa. Under the operation, the BSF increases the surveillance in the Pakistan border. It is usually launched in the Rajasthan border, especially in the Jaisalmer region. It is a regular annual exercise. It is launched in the month of January.
The Operation Sard Hawa is conducted during winters and Operation Garam Hawa is conducted during summers. These operations are held to control the infiltration in the borders. During winters thick fog blocks the vision in the border area. This scenario is highly advantageous for the terrorists to cross the border. It is essential for the security forces to stay alert during this season. The BSF conducts Operation Sard Hawa during winter for this reason. This year, the Operation Sard Hawa is to be conducted between January 23 and January 28.
The Operation is also launched to keep a hawk's eye and enhance the security before Republic Day celebrations.

India Undertakes Maritime Partnership Exercise with Japan

Indian Naval Ships Shivalik & Kadmatt undertook Maritime Partnership Exercise with Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force Ships Uraga and Hirado in the Bay of Bengal in January.
The exercise included a wide range of flying operations, replenishment approaches and tactical manoeuvres.
The precision, coordination and high level of interoperability reflected not only the high standards of professionalism and preparedness the two navies maintain to counter threats at sea, but also the high level of trust and understanding that they have built over the years.
The complex maritime exercises would enable the two navies to further strengthen their already wide-ranging strategic partnership and, when required, to jointly safeguard their maritime interests and ensure peace, security and stability in the region.

Exercise Milan 2022: India to Host 46 Nations Mega Naval Wargames

India has invited a total of 46 friendly foreign countries to participate in the multinational naval exercise Milan in Visakhapatnam, scheduled from February 25, 2022. The theme of this 11th edition of exercise Milan is 'camaraderie, cohesion and collaboration'. This exercise was initiated in 1995 and held biennially and conducted with friendly navies.
The professional competitions and conferences planned during this phase shall build the operational tempo for the Sea Phase planned from March 1-4. This Phase would be utilised to consolidate upon the lessons learnt during harbour interactions and to build upon the experience of operating together at sea.
The countries that have been extended invitations for participation include Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Israel, Iran, France, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Brazil, United Arab Emirates, among others.
As per an official, India has increased its naval engagements with friendly nations at bilateral, trilateral and multilateral levels since 2018.

Indian Army Signs Contract with Pvt. Sector Aimed at 'Atmanirbhar Defence'

In a significant step towards achieving self-reliance in the defence sector, the Indian Army signed its first contract worth Rs. 96 crore with Anadron Systems Pvt Ltd under Make-II for Maneuverable Expendable Aerial Target.

Lt Gen Manoj Pande Appointed as Next Vice Chief of Army Staff

The Government of India in January 2022 gave its approval to the proposal for the appointment of Eastern Army Commander Lieutenant General Manoj Pande as the next Vice Chief of Army Staff.
The Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Manoj Pande will be the next Army Vice Chief. He will be the successor to Lt Gen CP Mohanty who is scheduled to superannuate on January 31, 2022.
General Pande is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers) in December 1982. He is a graduate of Staff College, Camberley (United Kingdom) and attended the Higher Command Course at Army War College, Mhow at Indore in Madhya Pradesh and National Defence College (NDC) at Delhi.
During his 37 years of distinguished service, Pande took an active part in Operation Vijay and Operation Parakram.

South Korea Signs Deal to Sell M-SAM Surface-to-air Missiles to UAE

South Korea signed a preliminary deal with the UAE to sell Seoul's mid-range surface-to-air missiles to the Gulf nation, in the latest sign of deepening defence cooperation between the two nations.
The deal was signed after Moon held talks with UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in Dubai.
In November 2021, the UAE's defence ministry announced that it plans to acquire the missiles.
The M-SAM system, called Cheongung II, is a core element of South Korea's multi-layered anti-missile program. Cheongung, means heaven's bow in Korean.
Employing "hit-to-kill" technology, the missile is designed to intercept hostile missiles coming in at altitudes below 40 km.
