First Defence Minister-led Joint Commanders' Conference to Discuss Security Challenges, Future Wa...

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to address all the top military commanders during the first ever Joint Commanders' Conference planned to be held on September 4-5 in Lucknow.
  • The conference will be held with the theme "Sashakt aur Surakahit Bharat: Transforming the Armed Forces' (String and Secure India: Transforming the Armed Forces').
  • The Joint Commanders' Conference led by the Defence Minister would be held every year by the forces, while the Combined Commanders' Conference headed by the Prime Minister would be held every two years.
  • The last CCC meeting was held in Bhopal in March 2023 and the next one is expected to be held in March 2025.

Rahul Navin, the New Full-time Director of the ED

  • Acting Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Rahul Navin was appointed as full-time Director of the central agency. Navin will remain Director till August 13, 2026 when his two-year tenure will end. His superannuation from service is due in September 2027.
  • The move came almost a year after the post of regular director of ED fell vacant after Sanjay Mishra's tenure ended.
  • A 1993 batch Indian Revenue Service officer, Navin, has supervised some of the most politically sensitive cases including the Delhi liquor policy case and the Jharkhand land deals case. He is the only ED director to execute the arrest of two sitting Chief Ministers — Arvind Kejriwal and Hemant Soren.

IPS Nalin Prabhat Appointed New DGP of Jammu and Kashmir

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs appointed 1992-batch IPS officer Nalin Prabhat as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir. He is set to assume charge from October 1. Till then, he will work as the Special Director-General (DG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) sanctioned the inter-cadre deputation of Prabhat, who was the DG of the National Security Guard (NSG), from Andhra Pradesh to Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre for three years.
  • The decision to change Prabhat's cadre came just three months after he was appointed as the NSG DG. Earlier, ACC approved his appointment as the NSG DG until August 31, 2028.
  • Before joining the NSG, Prabhat was the additional director general and Special DG of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and headed its formation in Jammu and Kashmir.

  • General Phan Van Giang, Vietnam's Minister of National Defence, led a high-level delegation to the BrahMos Pavilion at the 10th International Military-Technical Forum 'Army 2024' in Russia. The visit signifies Vietnam's growing interest in advanced defence technologies and potential collaboration with India and Russia in the defence sector.
  • During the visit, General Giang received a detailed overview of the BrahMos supersonic missile system, a joint venture between India and Russia, known for its precision, speed, and multi-platform capabilities. The BrahMos delegation highlighted the missile's latest advancements, including its extended range, improved accuracy, and adaptability to various launch platforms.
  • The BrahMos Pavilion's participation in the 'Army 2024' forum further solidified its position as a leader in missile technology and a major contributor to the global defence industry. The event serves as a platform for showcasing military innovations, fostering international collaborations, and promoting global security.

India Successfully Tests Indigenous Long-range Glide Bomb 'Gaurav' (14)

  • India carried out a successful maiden flight test of long-range glide bomb (LRGB) Gaurav from a Su-30 MK-I fighter jet of the Indian Air Force. During the flight test, the glide bomb hit the target erected at Long Wheeler's Island with pinpoint accuracy.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented the DRDO, the Indian Air Force and the industry for the successful flight test of the glide bomb.
  • 'Gaurav' is an air launched 1,000 kg class glide bomb capable of hitting targets at long distance.

US Approves $20 Billion in Weapons Sales to Israel amid Threat of Wider Middle East War

  • The US approved $20 billion in arms sales to Israel, including scores of fighter jets and advanced air-to-air missiles.
  • Congress was notified of the impending sale, which includes more than 50 F-15 fighter jets, Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, or AMRAAMs, 120 mm tank ammunition and high explosive mortars and tactical vehicles and comes at a time of intense concern that Israel may become involved in a wider Middle East war.
  • However, the weapons are not expected to get to Israel anytime soon, they are contracts that will take years to fulfil. Much of what is being sold is to help Israel increase its military capability in the long term, the earliest systems being delivered under the contract aren't expected until the 2026 timeframe.

Mitra Shakti: India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise

  • A joint exercise between the militaries of India and Sri Lanka began in the island nation to facilitate interoperability and sharing of best practices.
  • The 10th edition of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise 'Mitra Shakti' at the Army Training School, Maduru Oya, is being conducted from August 12-25. It will enhance the joint military capability so as to undertake counter-insurgency operations in a sub-conventional scenario under the UN mandate.
  • Joint exercise 'Mitra Shakti' is an annual training event conducted alternatively in India and Sri Lanka. Its last edition was conducted in Pune in November 2023.
  • The aim of the joint exercise is to enhance the joint military capability of both sides to undertake counter-insurgency operations in a sub-conventional scenario under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate. The exercise will focus on operations in the semi-urban environment.
