EndureAir Joins Hands with 5 Defence PSUs to Establish Advanced Testing Facilities under DIT Scheme

  • Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) maker EndureAir collaborated with five defence PSUs for establishing advanced testing facilities under the DIT Scheme of the Ministry of Defence. The ministry signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up these testing facilities within the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) to drive technological advancements and provide essential infrastructure to test and refine niche defence technologies, particularly in unmanned aerial systems.
  • Launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh with an outlay of Rs. 400 crore in May 2020, the Defence Testing Infrastructure (DTI) Scheme is aimed at setting up testing facilities in collaboration with private industry and central or state government, promoting indigenous defence production, reducing military equipment imports and enhancing self-reliance.
  • EndureAir also said that it is the sole private firm involved alongside the five Defence PSUs -- Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Bharat Electronics Ltd, Gliders India Ltd, Yantra India Ltd, and BEML.

In a First, Two Women Officers of Indian Coast Guard Participate in Foreign Engagement

  • In a first, two women officers of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) were on board a patrol vessel on an overseas deployment. ICG offshore patrol vessel Sujay made a port call at Jakarta, Indonesia as part of its ongoing overseas deployment to East Asia.
  • The Indian Coast Guard said that the crew of Sujay engaged in professional interactions focusing on marine pollution response, maritime search and rescue, and maritime law enforcement.
  • The vessel is on a two-day visit to Indonesia.

Ulchi Freedom Shield Exercises

  • South Korea and the United States kicked off annual summertime military exercises, seeking to boost their joint readiness to fend off North Korea's weapons and cyber threats.
  • The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, set to end on August 29, came as North Korea races to advance its nuclear and missile programmes and tries to launch reconnaissance satellites. The drills reflect "realistic threats" across all domains, including the North's missile threats but also GPS jamming, cyberattacks and other lessons learned from recent incidents.

BEML Signs MoU with Indian Navy

  • Bengaluru headquartered BEML, India's leading defence and heavy engineering PSU, signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with the Directorate of Marine Engineering, Indian Navy. The agreement was signed at the Naval Headquarters in Delhi, with Ajit Kumar Srivastav, Director of Defence at BEML, and Rear Admiral K. Srinivas, ACOM (D&R) of the Indian Navy.
  • This landmark agreement is a pivotal step in enhancing bilateral cooperation for the indigenous design, development, manufacture, testing, and product support of critical marine equipment and systems.
  • It also said the partnership aims to strengthen self-reliance in defence production and minimise reliance on foreign imports.
  • BEML was incorporated on May 11, 1964. It started its operations in 1965 with the transfer of a Tractor project from Ordnance Factory Board's Gun & Shell Factory. It was wholly owned by the government and operated by India's Ministry of Defence until 1992, when the government divested 25% of its holdings in the company.

Rajnath Inaugurate Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre building in Chennai

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the newly constructed state-of-the-art Indian Coast Guard's Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) building in Chennai.
  • As per the defence ministry, the MRCC underscores the ICG's commitment to safeguarding lives at sea and ensuring swift response in critical situations.
  • Singh also inaugurate two additional key facilities, a the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre (RMPRC) in Chennai and the Coast Guard Air Enclave (CGAE) in Puducherry.
  • This landmark occasion highlighted a major advancement in maritime safety and regional coordination, marking a significant step towards enhancing maritime security and emergency response along the Indian coastline.

India-Vietnam Holds Maritime security Dialogue

  • The 4th India-Vietnam Maritime Security Dialogue was held at Hanoi close on the heels of Vietnam PM visit to India.
  • The Indian delegation was led by Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary, Disarmament & International Security Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs and the Vietnamese delegation by Trinh Duc Hai, Vice Chairman, National Boundary Commission.
  • During the dialogue, the two sides discussed the ways to enhance maritime cooperation in furthering a conducive environment for mutual growth and global well-being.
  • They reviewed the ongoing cooperation initiatives in the maritime domain and discussed the avenues to cooperate at various international and regional fora for shared objectives.
  • They agreed to further strengthen their shared efforts in areas such as Marine Scientific Research, Ocean Economy, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), Navy and Coast Guard cooperation and maritime law enforcement.

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to address all the top military commanders during the first ever Joint Commanders' Conference planned to be held on September 4-5 in Lucknow.
  • The conference will be held with the theme "Sashakt aur Surakahit Bharat: Transforming the Armed Forces' (String and Secure India: Transforming the Armed Forces').
  • The Joint Commanders' Conference led by the Defence Minister would be held every year by the forces, while the Combined Commanders' Conference headed by the Prime Minister would be held every two years.
  • The last CCC meeting was held in Bhopal in March 2023 and the next one is expected to be held in March 2025.
