Rohit Sharma 'Honoured and Humbled' for Khel Ratna Nomination

  • Named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2019, Rohit became the first player in history to score five ODI centuries in a single edition of the World Cup.
  • He surpassed MS Dhoni to hit the maximum number of sixes in international matches on Indian soil. Later in the year, being assigned the responsibility of opening the batting in Tests, Rohit became the only player to have twin centuries in his maiden appearance as a Test opener.
  • India batsman Rohit Sharma, was nominated for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, expressed his gratitude for being shortlisted for the honour by the BCCI.

Virat Kohli Only Cricketer in Forbes' Top 100 Highest-Paid Athletes of 2020

  •  India captain Virat Kohli remained the only cricketer to be included in the list of top 100 highest-paid athletes of 2020 put forward by Forbes magazine.
  • The right-handed batsman is also the only Indian athlete to be featured in the list.
  • According to Forbes, Kohli had an estimated total earnings of $26 million ($24m from endorsements and $2m from salary/winnings). He made a jump of over 30 places from 2019, as he was positioned at the 66th spot in this year's list.
  • Meanwhile, Swiss tennis great Roger Federer has become the first from his sport to top Forbes' list of highest paid athletes. With an estimated $106.3 million earned over the past 12 months, Federer edged out Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo from the top spot.
  • The three athletes immediately below Federer are all football players with Ronaldo on second with estimated earnings of $105 million. His arch rival and Argentine great Lionel Messi is third with an estimated $104 million while Brazil's Neymar comes fourth with $95.5 million.

Hockey Legend Balbir Singh Sr Passes Away at 96

  • Triple Olympic gold medallist Balbir Singh Senior breathed his last at a Mohali hospital. He was 96.
  • Singh was member of the 1948 London Olympics gold medal-winning Indian hockey team, apart from being the vice-captain of the 1952 victorious side and skipper of the 1956 champions.
  • Singh, whose full name was Balbir Singh Dosanjh but was called Senior to differentiate from the other five Balbirs who played for India in later years, was also the oldest surviving Olympic medallist from India, a record which now passes on to his 1948 London Olympics team-mate Keshav Dutt.

Aritz Aduriz, Spanish Footballer Announces Retirement

  • Spanish footballer, Athletic Bilbao striker Artiz Aduriz announced his retirement at the age of 39 after finding out that he requires prosthetic hip replacement surgery.
  • Aritz Aduriz started with Athletic and also played for the Spanish clubs Valladolid, Mallorca and Valencia.
  • In 2010 he won his first Spain cap.
  • In the Spanish Super Cup 2015 final he scored four goals over the two legs and defeated FC Barcelona (5-1) on aggregate to win the title.
  • He won 13 caps for Spain becoming the oldest player to score for Spain in 2016, he scored 141 goals in 296 appearances for Bilbao.
  • He became a member of Spain's Vicente del Bosque's squad in the European Championship 2016, France.

TCLL and Sports Authority Gujarat in Pact to Train 2000 Athletes

  • Times Centre for Learning Limited (TCLL) recently signed an MOU with the Sports Authority Gujarat to impart training for personality and skill development for aspiring athletes across Gujarat.
  • Sports Authority Gujarat has partnered with TCLL and they will be beginning by training over 2000 young and aspiring athletes across Gujarat in areas such as Nadiad, Anand, Tapi, Porbandar, Surat and Himmat Nagar.

Naomi Osaka Becomes World's Highest-Paid Female Athlete

  • Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has become the world's highest-paid female athlete, displacing US rival Serena Williams at the top of the list.
  • According to Forbes magazine, Osaka, 22, a two-time Grand Slam champion, made £30.7m in prize money and endorsements over the past 12 months.
  • That was £1.15m more than the amount earned by 38-year-old Williams.
  • Both shattered the previous single-year earnings record of £24.4m set in 2015 by Russia's Maria Sharapova.
  • Since Forbes began tracking women athletes' income in 1990, tennis players have topped the annual list every year.
  • Osaka, whose father was born in Haiti and whose mother is Japanese, is 29th on the 2020 Forbes list of the world's 100 top-paid athletes, four spots ahead of Williams, the winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles.
