Michael Clarke Appointed Officer in Order of Australia

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke was appointed an officer in the Order of Australia, an honour for achievement or meritorious service.
The 39-year-old, who retired from international cricket following the World Cup triumph in 2015, played 115 Tests, 245 ODIs and 34 T20Is, scoring 8643, 7981 and 488 runs respectively.

Russia Hires Bragin as Men's National Hockey Team Coach

Russia hired Valery Bragin as coach of the men's national hockey team as it gears up to defend its Olympic title in 2022.
Bragin moved up from his longtime role in charge of the Russian under-20 team, which he led to the silver medal at this year's (2020) world junior championships.
Bragin replaced former Toronto Maple Leafs player Alexei Kudashov, who moved into a consultant role with the national team after 11 months as head coach.
Bragin also took over from Kudashov as head coach of club team SKA St. Petersburg, whose operations are tightly intertwined with those of the national team. Roman Rotenberg is the general manager for both teams and holds vice president roles in both the club and the federation.

AIFF Invites Bids for New I-League Clubs

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) invited bids for new clubs who would take part in the Hero I-League from 2020-21. The bids have been invited from non-Hero I-League cities and include names of several cities like New Delhi, Ranchi, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bhopal, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, amongst others.
Prospective owners will be able to purchase the invitation to tender from the Football House in Delhi between June 10 and June 20 upon payment of Rs. 4 lakh.

India to Host 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup

The Asian Football Confederation has awarded the hosting rights of the 2022 Women's Asian Cup to India for the first time since 1979.
The decision was taken at the AFC Women's Football Committee meeting. In February, the AFC Women's Football Committee had recommended India to be hosts.
The tournament will likely be held in the second half of the year. In the 1979 edition, India had finished as runners-up.
The tournament will feature 12 teams, expanded from the previous slot of 8 teams.
India qualifies directly as hosts. The event will also serve as the final qualification tournament for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes Football's First Billion-dollar Man

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi - the rivalry between the two footballing legends define an entire generation. Be it the number of goals, the number of trophies or the number of awards, Messi and Ronaldo continue to compete with each other in every aspect. Sometimes, Messi would pip Ronaldo in some areas, and sometimes, Ronaldo would surpass Messi in others.
According to a report in Forbes, the Portugal star forward Ronaldo has beaten Lionel Messi to become the first footballer to earn $1 billion during his playing career.
The 35-year-old, who had earned $105 million before taxes and fees in the past year, is the third athlete to reach the mark during his career, only after golfer Tiger Woods and boxer Floyd Mayweather.
Ronaldo is also the first player to reach the earnings milestone of $1 billion in a team sport.

Japan Will Explore Simplified Version of Olympic Games

Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike said that it may be necessary to a stage a "simplified" Olympics next year due to the impact of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic and that organisers were already discussing possible changes.
John Coates, the head of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) inspectorate for Tokyo, said that organisers had to plan for what could be a "very different" Olympics if Covid-19 isn't completely eradicated by next year.

Chelsea to Sign Germany Forward Timo Werner

As per reports, Chelsea agreed a deal in principle to sign Germany striker Timo Werner from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.
The report added that Werner has a 55 million euro release clause which expires on June 15 and that Premier League club Chelsea had offered the 24-year-old a contract worth 200,000 pounds per week.
Werner is second-top scorer in the Bundesliga this season with 25 goals, four behind Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski. He has made 29 appearances for Germany, scoring 11 times.

SAI to Launch Khelo India e-Pathshala

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) is all set to launch Khelo India e-Pathshala in association with National Sports Federations (NSF) from June 1, 2020 with an aim to provide first-ever national-level open online coaching and education programme for grassroot-level athletes.
Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and Union Minister of Tribal Affairs and Archery Association of India president Arjun Munda inaugrated the programme through a webinar.
The programme will cover 21 sporting disciplines, including, athletics, archery, boxing, cycling, fencing, football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, kayaking & canoeing, kabaddi, para games, rowing, shooting, taekwondo, table tennis, Volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling and wushu.
The e-learning programme will feature eminent athletes demonstrating technical skills and interacting with young athletes about techniques to improve their overall game.
