World Zoonoses Day

Zoonoses Day which is observed on July 6 every year to commemorate the scientific achievement of administering first vaccination against a zoonotic disease. Zoonoses are infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites that spread between animals and humans.
It was on July 6, 1885, when Louis Pasteur successfully administered the first vaccine against Rabies virus, a zoonotic disease. Approximately 150 zoonotic diseases are known to exist. Zoonoses can spread from direct contact with animals or indirectly, vector-borne or food-borne.
Some of the most common zoonotic diseases are: Plague, Tuberculosis, Cat Scratch Fever, Tick Paralysis Hantavirus, Ringworm, Salmonellosis and many more.
Louis Pasteur was a French biologist, microbiologist and chemist renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation and pasteurization. He is remembered for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and prevention of diseases, and his discoveries have saved many lives ever since. He reduced mortality from puerperal fever, and created the first vaccines for rabies and anthrax.

Two-time Olympic Champion Lin Dan Retires

China's two-time Olympic badminton champion Lin Dan, one of the sport's greatest singles players, announced his retirement. Lin who won the Olympics singles titles in Beijing in 2008 and the 2012 London Games, has won all the sport's major titles, including five world championships' gold medals.
The end of Lin Dan's glorious career comes just over a year after the retirement of his great rival and friend, the Malaysian star Lee Chong Wei. The duo reigned over badminton for more than a decade.

First Indian To Secures Podium Position In International Ultracycling Race

Lt Col Bharat Pannu, a serving Indian Army Officer created history by successfully securing a podium place at the first edition of the Virtual Race Across America (vRAAM) 2020.
With this, he has become the first Indian ever to win a podium place at an international ultracycling race.
Pannu is an army officer posted with the Army's Aviation Test Team.
The Race Across America (RAAM) is a 5000 km transcontinental race from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States of America with a cut-off time of 12 days.
This year, the organisers had to cancel the event due to the ongoing pandemic and came up with a virtual format for the race.
The race saw the participation of 17 ultra-endurance cyclists from around the world, of which only nine could successfully complete the grueling race.
Lt Col Pannu finished 3rd on the leaderboard with a total distance of 4086 km in 12 days and a total cumulative elevation gain of 71,000 metres.

Shashank Manohar Steps Down as ICC Chairman

Shashank Manohar has formally stepped down as International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman after heading the sport's global governing body for four years.
Singapore's Imran Khwaja, previously Manohar's deputy, has been elevated as interim chairman until the process for the next chairman's election is finalised.
Confirming Manohar's departure and Khwaja's elevation, the ICC said that its Board is expected to approve the election procedure for the successor within the next week.
Manohar, who made a surprising return as BCCI president in 2015 following Jagmohan Dalmiya's demise, resigned from the BCCI and took over as the first independent chairman of the ICC in 2016.

Ravinder Jadeja Named the Most Valuable Player of India by Wisden

Spin bowling all-rounder, 31 years old Ravindra Jadeja, was named India's Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 21st century by Wisden for his contribution in both batting and fielding.
Jadeja's MVP rating is around 97.3 which is second only to Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka making him the second most Valuable Test Player of the 21st Century.
The CricViz, an analysis tool in cricket was used by the Wisden to analyse his performance.
Jadeja made his debut in 2009 and represented India in 49 test matches, 165 ODIs and 49 T20Is as of 2020.

Rijju Launches NADA App to Help Athletes

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) launched its first mobile application to eliminate the gap between itself and the athletes by providing easily-accessible information on various aspects of sport, prohibited substances and dope-testing.
The application was launched by Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju through videoconferencing in the presence of Sports Secretary Ravi Mittal and NADA DG Navin Agarwal.
With the launch of this app, athletes can check for themselves the list of prohibited substances and don't have to depend on anyone else for assistance.
NADA is hopeful that the app acts as a one-stop guide for all anti-doping and medication related information. It includes detailed information on commonly-prescribed medicines and can be used by athletes in the Registered Testing Pool (RTP) to update their whereabouts, know about decisions from the disciplinary and appeal panels and for Dope Control Officers to record their availability for testing.
