Jolt to India's Olympic Preparations as WADA Extends NDTL Suspension by Six Months

  • In a massive jolt to India's Olympic preparations, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) extended the suspension of the country's National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) by another six months citing non-conformation to international standards. The WADA first suspended NDTL in August last year for a period of six months. A fresh round of inspection by the world body, much to the embarrassment of country's sporting establishment, showed that non-conformities still existed. So, the World Anti-Doping Agency has suspended the accreditation of the National Dope Testing Laboratory in New Delhi, India, for a second period of up to six months.
  • The suspension prohibits the NDTL from carrying out any anti-doping activities, including all analyses of urine and blood samples.
  • The laboratory's non-conformities pertain to the International Standard for Laboratories (ISL) identified during a WADA site visit, including the laboratory's isotope ratio mass spectrometry -- the analytical technique of choice for confirmation of prohibited substances.

G. M. Harikrishna Wins Chess960 Event at Biel Festival

  • Harikrishna won the Chess960 event of the 53rd Biel International Chess Festival in Switzerland. It is the first major chess tournament taking place over the board since the coronavirus outbreak.
  • The World No. 26 from Guntur, who is now living in Prague, scored 5.5 points from seven rounds to top the field of 8 players.
  • Chess960 is one of the three events of the main section of the Biel festival, the others being rapid and classical. In Chess960, a format invented by the late World champion Bobby Fischer, the game is played with the pieces randomly shuffled on the back rank of either player, because of which the advantage of opening theory is minimised.

Lionel Messi Finishes as Top Scorer in La Liga for a Record Seventh Time

  • Lionel Messi finished as top scorer in La Liga for a record seventh time after netting twice as dethroned champions Barcelona ended their disappointing campaign on a high with a resounding 5-0 win at Alaves.
  • The Argentine, who also finished as top marksman for a fourth consecutive season, eclipsed the benchmark he previously shared with the late Telmo Zarra.
  • Messi said that individual prizes and objectives are secondary. It's an important achievement to win it seven times but I would have liked it to have been accompanied by the La Liga title.

BCCI Hopes for Formal Postponement of T20 World Cup

  • On hold for the past two months, the fate of this year's T20 World Cup will be up for a decisive round of deliberation when the ICC board meets virtually with the BCCI hoping for a postponement to ensure that the IPL can go ahead.
  • The global event is supposed to be held from October 18 to November 15 in Australia but the country's cricket board had, in May itself, expressed its inability to host amid a second surge of COVID-19 cases in the state of Victoria.
  • With India's case load also exceeding the 10 lakh mark, including more than 26,000 deaths, the IPL, if it is held, is likely to move to the UAE once the central government gives its go ahead.
