Joshua Cheptegei Sets World Record as Athletics Returns in Monaco

Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei ensured a thrilling return for competitive athletics as he shattered the much-vaunted 16-year-old 5,000m world record at the Monaco Diamond League. Cheptegei's astonishing display capped a warm welcome back for track and field for a season almost wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic, with fellow world champions Noah Lyles and Karsten Warholm also shining on the track. Lyles had worn a black glove on his right hand and raised his fist at the start of the 200m to show his support for recent anti-racism protests.
Cheptegei clocked 12min 35.36sec to shatter Ethiopian legend Kenenisa Bekele's previous best of 12:37.35, set in 2004.
Following exhibition events in Oslo and Zurich in June and July, the Diamond League meeting in Monaco marked the start of the competitive season.

Suresh Raina Joins MS Dhoni in Retirement

Left-handed batsman Suresh Raina announced his retirement from international cricket.
Raina's announcement came minutes after MS Dhoni's decision to bid adieu to international cricket.
It was on July 30, 2005, when Raina made his debut for the Men in Blue. He went on to make his debut in an ODI match against Sri Lanka at Dambulla.
Raina is the first Indian batsman to register centuries in all three formats of the game.
Raina played 18 Tests, 226 ODIs, and 78 T20Is for India. Raina also cemented his place as one of the best fielders ever to play the game for India.
He was also a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad and the batsman had played crucial knocks in the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the tournament.
Raina would now be seen in action for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

MS Dhoni Announces Retirement from International Cricket

MS Dhoni, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing down curtains on a near 16-year-long storied career of one of the country's greatest limited-overs cricketers. Dhoni retires as India's most successful captain in limited-over internationals, having won three ICC trophies - 2007 T20 World Cup, 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy - the only captain to do so.
Dhoni made the confirmation through a video on Instagram, its caption reading: "Thanks – Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. From 1929 hours consider me as Retired."
The announcement means that Dhoni's last India game would remain the semifinal of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in which India lost to New Zealand by 18 runs. It was his 350th ODI, in which he scored 50 off 72 balls before being run-out by a bullet throw from Martin Guptill in the deep. Incidentally, Dhoni was run-out in his first ODI as well.
Having retired from Test cricket in December of 2014 with 4876 runs from 90 matches, Dhoni carried on playing ODIs and T20Is. With 10,733 runs, Dhoni is fifth in the list of India's all-time run-scorers in ODI behind Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. His overall Indian numbers are staggering: 538 matches, 17,266 runs, 16 centuries, 108 fifties, 359 sixes, 829 dismissals.

Punjab Cricket Association Requests Yuvraj Singh to be Player Cum Mentor

Punjab Cricket Association requested former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh to come out of retirement and become a player cum mentor of the state team.
PCA secretary Puneet Bali made the request since Yuvraj, who retired last year, was already mentoring some players, inclduing Shubman Gill.
Last month Yuvraj spent time mentoring the likes of Gill, Anmolpreet Singh, Abhishek Sharma and Harpreet Brar, all of whom are set to play in the upcoming IPL in UAE.
Punjab has lost a number of key players in recent years and Bali said that the state team can benefit from Yuvraj's experience and mentoring.

INOX Group to be Official Sponsor of Indian Team at 2021 Tokyo Olympics

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced that the INOX group will be the official sponsor of the Indian team for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics.
The Tokyo Olympics was rescheduled to next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be held from July 23 to August 8 in 2021.
As part of the partnership the Group will also support team's promotions through its entertainment company -- INOX Leisure Limited, which owns a chain of multiplexes in the country.

Joshua Cheptegei Aims to Return with a World Record

Ugandan athlete Joshua Cheptegei is aiming to make a real statement and claim a world record in his first race on the track this year.
The 23-year-old is aiming to break the 16-year-old world record for the 5,000 metres, set by Ethiopian great Kenenisa Bekele, at the first Diamond League meeting of the year.
Cheptegei does not seem concerned that this will be his first track race this season, which has seen many events cancelled or postponed due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.
It will be the 10,000 metre world champion's first race since February, which was also in Monaco and resulted in a world record for the 5km on the road.
His time on the road was 12 minutes 51 seconds, which is actually six seconds faster than he has run on a track.
In order to claim Bekele's record of 12:37.35 minutes the Ugandan will have to run more than 20 seconds faster than he has ever done on a track.

PCA to Name Mullanpur Stadium after Late Maharaja Yadavindra Singh

Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) is set to name its new stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, Punjab after the late Maharaja Yadavindra Singh.
PCA President Rajinder Gupta proposed the idea to name the stadium and it had been approved.
Maharaja Yadavindra Singh played a test match for India against England in 1934.
Maharaja Yadavindra Singh was the father of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. He was the 9th and the last Maharaja of Patiala.

Former Mohun Bagan Captain and India Defender Manitombi Singh Dies

Former India defender and Mohun Bagan captain Manitombi Singh passed away at the age of 39 at his native village near Imphal in Manipur.
Mohun Bagan family is deeply saddened by the untimely demise of former club captain Manitombi Singh.
Manitombi was a key member of the Stephen Constantine-coached India Under-23 side that lifted the LG Cup in 2003 by defeating Vietnam 3-2 in Ho Chi Minh City.
It was India''s first international triumph since their victory at an eight-nation tournament in Singapore in 1971.
Manitombi also represented India in the 2002 Busan Asian Games.
