Neymar Moves Past Ronaldo with 64th Brazil Goal

  • Neymar overtook Ronaldo Nazario and moved into second place behind Pele on Brazil`s all-time goal scoring list after notching a hat-trick in a 4-2 victory over Peru in a World Cup qualifier.
  • According to the count by world governing body FIFA, the Paris St Germain striker now has 64 goals, two more than Ronaldo and 13 behind Pele, who heads the list with 77.
  • Neymar, who made his Brazil debut in 2010, scored his 64 goals in 103 games. 

Constantina Dita Ambassador for the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships

  • Romania's 2008 Olympic champion Constantina Dita was named an ambassador for the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships to be held in Gdynia, Poland on 17th October.
  • The Romanian competed at eight editions of the World Half Marathon Championships and earned seven medals in the process, making her one of the most successful athletes in the history of the event. Her double victory in Edmonton in 2005, taking individual and team gold medals, remains one of the highlights of her career.
  • Along with her major championship medals, she was also successful at big city marathons. She won the 2004 Chicago Marathon and finished second in 2005. She also made it on to the podium at three editions of the London Marathon.

Top Level Exits at Star Sports

  • Four top level executives of Star Sports have quit, including president and CEO Gautam Thakar, just days after Uday Shankar announced his departure from the broadcaster even as IPL has made a solid start despite the Covid-19 disruption.
  • The three other executive vice presidents, who have also put in their papers, are – Ashok Namboodiri (business head – regional sports network), Rajiv Mathrani, (marketing head) and Rupali Fernandes (emerging sports).
  • K. Madhavan, managing director, Star & Disney India had called the meeting of top rung at Star Sports to inform the team of Thakar's decision and elevation of Sanjog Gupta, head of sports content (Production & Programming), to Thakar's role.

Former India Football Captain Carlton Chapman Passes Away

  • Former India football captain Carlton Chapman, who had formed a deadly trio in club football with Bhaichung Bhutia and IM Vijayan in the 1990s, passed away at the of 49.
  • A creative midfielder, Chapman played for India between 1995 and 2001 and the country won the 1997 SAFF Cup under his captaincy. At the club level, he had two successful spells with East Bengal and one with now-defunct JCT Mills.
  • A product of the Tata Football Academy in early 1990s, Chapman joined East Bengal in 1993 and scored a hat-trick in his team's 6-2 win against Iraq club Al Zawra in a first round match at the Asian Cup Winners Cup that year.

Nadal Wins French Open 2020

  • Rafael Nadal won the French Open, 2020 beating Novak Djokovic. This is Nadal's 20th Grand Slam and 13th French Open title.
  • He is a Spanish Tennis player. He is ranked number 2 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He has won two Olympic medals, 21 ATP Tour 500 titles, 35 ATP Tour Masters 1000 titles. Also, he has won 13 French Open, one Australian open, two Wimbledon, four US open.
  • He has a stand alone record of the player with most clay court titles. Due to this, he is called "The King of Clay" in the sport of Tennis.
  • Under female category of French Open, 2020, Iga Swiatek won the title. She was the first player from Poland to win a Grand Slam.
  • She is ranked at 48 by the Women Tennis Association. She is the third highest ranked teenager.

Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies Retain French Open Men's Doubles Title

  • German duo Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies retained their French Open doubles crown as they beat Croatian Mate Pavic and Brazilian Bruno Soares 6-3, 7-5. 
  • A year after becoming the first all-German team to capture a Grand Slam men`s doubles trophy in the professional era, they again shone on the Parisian clay, winning in 89 minutes.
  • The eighth seeds were clinical against the U.S. Open champions, breaking once in each set for victory and became only the fourth team to win back-to-back French Open titles.

Iga Swiatek Wins Maiden Grand Slam Title

  • Iga Swiatek became the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam as she beat Sofia Kenin 6-4, 6-1. 
  • The unseeded 19-year-old, who did not drop a set throughout the claycourt tournament, is the youngest winner since Monica Seles lifted the Suzanne Lenglen Cup in 1992.
  • She is the first player not to drop a set en route to the women's title here since Belgium's Justine Henin in 2007.

Nihal Sarin Wins Junior Speed Chess Championship

  • Indian teenager Nihal Sarin created history by winning the Chess.com's 2020 Junior Speed Online Chess Championship, defeating Russia's Alexey Sarana 18-7 in the final.
  • With this win, Sarin earned USD 8,766 and also qualified for the 2020 Speed Chess Championship Final which will feature the world's best players.
  • Sarin had registered win over American Andrew Tang, Australia's Anton Smirnov and Armenian Haik Martirosyan in order to set-up a title clash with Sarana.

French Open: Sofia Kenin to Lock Horns with Iga Swiatek in Women's Singles Final

  • American tennis star Sofia Kenin will square off with teen sensation Iga Swiatek in the summit showdown of the women's singles event of this year's French Open at the Philippe Chatrier Court.
  • Kenin booked her place in the final of the second Grand Slam event of 2020 with a comfortable 6-4, 7-5 triumph over Czech seventh-seed Petra Kvitova in a one-sided semi-final clash of the women's singles event.
  • En route to her victory, the fourth-seeded American produced controlled tennis and saved 10 break points against two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova.
