Sankalp Gupta Becomes India's 71st Chess Grandmaster

Sankalp Gupta became India's 71st Grandmaster by scoring 6.5 points and finishing second in the GM Ask 3 round-robin event in Arandjelovac, Serbia.
Sankalp secured the three required Grandmaster norms in just 24 days by playing three tournaments on the trot. In all three events, his rating performances were at 2599 and above.
The Maharashtra player also touched the 2500 Elo rating mark during the tournament.
To achieve the Grandmaster title, a player has to secure three Grandmaster norms and cross the live rating of 2,500 Elo points.

Rashid Khan Becomes Youngest Bowler to Take 400 T20 Wickets

Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan became the youngest bowler to take 400 T20 wickets during his team's crucial Super 12 encounter against New Zealand in Dubai. Martin Guptill became Rashid's 400th victim in T20 cricket. Rashid joined an elite list of cricketers as he picked up his 400th wicket in ongoing New Zealand vs Afghanistan T20 World Cup game. He is the 4th bowler to enter the 400 club after Dwayne Bravo (553), Sunil Narine (425) and Imran Tahir (420).
Earlier, Rashid had become the fastest bowler to register 100 dismissals in Twenty20 Internationals during a T20 World Cup 2021 match against Pakistan. Rashid has 103 wickets for Afghanistan and 93 scalps for Sunrisers Hyderabad while the rest have come for the teams he plays for in different T20 tournaments around the world.

Barcelona Fans Welcome New Coach Xavi Hernandez

Thousands of fans arrived at the Camp Nou to welcome Xavi Hernndez as Barcelona's new coach, hoping he can turn the club's fortunes around after a dismal start to its first season post-Lionel Messi.
Xavi, who thrived in Barcelona's side for several years when Paris Saint-Germain forward Messi was also in the same team, was officially introduced at a reception usually offered only to top players.
Xavi has signed a contract until June 2024.

T20 World Cup: India Ousted as New Zealand Clinch Semi-final Spot

India were sent packing from the T20 World Cup after a clinical New Zealand clinched a facile eight-wicket triumph over Afghanistan in their final Super 12 game to claim the last available semi-final spot.
India's slim hopes hinged on Afghanistan upstaging the Black Caps as that would have brought the Net Run Rate into equation and opened the doors for Virat Kohli's men.

Mountaineer Mohite Gets Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award

Maharashtra-based mountaineer Priyanka Mohite was bestowed with the prestigious 'Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2020' for her outstanding contribution in the field of land adventure.
Mohite, who hails from Satara district, received the award from President Ram Nath Kovind at a function in the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.
Mohite, who started out by trekking in Sahyadri ranges in western Maharashtra and rock-climbing, began summiting mountains from 2010.
In her 11-year mountaineering career, she has scaled the world's highest peak Mt Everest besides Mt Lhotse and Mt Makalu, among others.

Manika-Archana Win Women's Doubles Title in Slovenia

India's Manika Batra and Archana Kamath tasted their first major success as a pair by winning the women's doubles title at the WTT Contender Lasko.
The world number 36 pairing beat the 23rd-ranked combine of Melanie Diaz and Adriana Diaz from Puerto Rico 11-3, 11-8, 12-10. The India duo saved four game points in third set to seal the match.
Manika and Archana had to dig deep to beat China's Liu Weishan and Wang Yidi in the semi-finals.

Akash Ends with Bronze Medal at World Boxing Championships

Debutant Akash Kumar (54 kg) signed off with a bronze medal in the AIBA Men's World Boxing Championships after being bested by Kazakh teenager Makhmud Sabyrkhan in the semi-finals.
Akash lost 0-5 to end India's campaign in the marquee competition, where Akash became only the seventh Indian male boxer to secure a medal. He also claimed a prize money of USD 25,000.

Unmukt Chand 1st Indian Male to Sign up for BBL

Unmukt Chand became the first Indian male cricketer to sign up for the Big Bash League as he is set to feature in the Melbourne Renegades side in the upcoming edition. The 28-year-old, who led India to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2012, has represented India A, apart from featuring in teams like Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. He announced his retirement from Indian cricket in August this year stating that he would explore 'better opportunities from around the world'.
Chand has now shifted his base to the United States of America (USA). He was recently named 'Player of the Tournament as his side, Silicon Valley Strikers, won the Minor League Cricket (MCL) title. The right-handed batter will travel to Australia later this month and be available for the entire duration of the tournament.

Jasprit Bumrah is Now India's Highest T20 Wicket Taker with 64 Scalps

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah became India's leading wicket taker in the shortest format when he dismissed two batters during the T20 World Cup match against Scotland to take his tally to 64.
The Gujarat pacer achieved the feat when he castled Mark Watt in the 18th over of the game.
Bumrah, who had match figures 2/10, now has 64 T20 wickets from 54 matches. He surpassed spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who has 63 wickets from 49 matches.
Ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is third with 55 wickets from 48 matches and is followed by pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar (50 wickets from 52) and Ravindra Jadeja (43 wickets from 54 matches).

Boxing Worlds: Debutant Akash Kumar Enters Semis

Boxer Akash Kumar (54 kg) secured India's first medal at the ongoing AIBA Men's World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia by advancing to the semi-finals with a superb win over former Olympic silver-medallist Yoel Finol Rivas of Venezuela.
However, Narender Berwal (+92 kg) bowed out of the competition, out-maneuvered by Azerbaijan's Mahammad Abdullayev. Berwal lost 0-5.

Yuvraj Singh Hints at Comeback from Retirement Next Year

World Cup-winning former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has decided to come out of retirement in February next year "on public demand", more than two years after he called it quits.
It remains unclear whether he will be returning to be in contention for a place in the Indian team or in T20 leagues.
The player-of-the-tournament at the 2011 World Cup, the swashbuckling all-rounder had announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in June 2019.
Yuvraj played 304 ODIs and 40 Test for India, scoring 8701 and 1900 runs respectively after making his debut in October 2000.
