Wipro Signs MoU with Tel Aviv University

Strengthening the India-Israel scientific collaboration, Indian multinational corporation Wipro has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Israel's Tel Aviv University for research and analysis in quantum science and technology.
According to the MoU, Tel Aviv University's Center for Quantum Science & Technology (QuanTAU) faculty members will work with Wipro and its customers to analyse use cases and potential applications of quantum computing for the Indian IT major's large organisational clients.
Tel Aviv University researchers and Wipro scientists will develop and study various approaches, define potential research solutions and implement these solutions.

Venkaiah Naidu Calls for Bridging STEM Gender Divide

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu called for bridging the gender divide in STEM-related employment that is in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math-related careers.
Vice President said that while India produces the highest percentage of women STEM graduates in the world (about 40 per cent), their share in STEM jobs in India is very low at 14 per cent and needs to be improved.
As per Naidu, due to the government's efforts, the number of girl students in IITs went up from just 8 per cent in 2016 to nearly 20 per cent now.
Naidu also appreciated the Department of Science & Technology's Women Scientists Program as a laudable initiative that encourages women to take up careers in science and maths.

NDRF Inducts its First Women's Team

Keeping in line with the government's policy, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has inducted the first batch of over 100 women calamity combatants and rescuers.
Officials in the country's federal calamity force said that an all-women team of freshly trained NDRF personnel was deployed for contingency duties on the banks of the Ganga in Uttar Pradesh's Garh Mukteshwar town.

India records highest number of babies born on New Year's Day: UNICEF

More than 371,500 babies were born worldwide on New Year's Day and India is estimated to have recorded the highest number of births at around 60,000, according to the UN's children's agency.
UNICEF said that an estimated 371,504 babies were born around the world on New Year's Day. Fiji in the Pacific was projected to have welcomed 2021's first baby while the United States would welcome its last.
Globally, over half of these births are estimated to have taken place in 10 countries: India (59,995), China (35,615), Nigeria (21,439), Pakistan (14,161), Indonesia (12,336), Ethiopia (12,006), the United States (10,312), Egypt (9,455), Bangladesh (9,236) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (8,640), it said.

U.S. Congress passes 'Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act' for Pakistani women

The U.S. Congress has passed the 'Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act' which will expand the number of scholarships available to Pakistani women to receive higher education under a merit and needs-based programme.
Passed by the House of Representatives in March 2020, the bill was passed by the United States Senate by a voice vote on January 1. The bill now heads to the White House for U.S. President Donald Trump to sign into law.
The bill requires the U.S. Agency for International Development to award at least 50% of scholarships under a Pakistan-based higher education scholarship programme to Pakistani women, from 2020 to 2022, across a range of academic disciplines and in accordance with existing eligibility criteria.

Pokhriyal Lays Foundation of School of Engineering, Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Management

Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank laid the foundation stone of the Academic Complex for School of Engineering and Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Management and Entrepreneurship at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
The university aims to complete the building process within 20 months.

Indian School of Democracy Launches Bilingual Fellowship

Indian School of Democracy (ISD) founded by Teach For India Alumni Hemakshi Meghani and Prakhar Bhartiya launched a bilingual fellowship programme for aspiring political leaders. The programme named 'A Good Politician' will begin on August 15, 2021.
The Good Politician' is geared to nurture grassroots political leaders who are already involved in the political sphere.
Spanning over one year, it is meant for leaders aspiring to be elected as sarpanches and municipal councillors.
To ensure access to a range of people, the programme will be taught in Hindi and English.
Indian School of Democracy was founded with the basic principle of sarvodaya - upliftment of all.

PM to lay Foundation Stone of Permanent Campus of IIM-Sambalpur in Odisha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Sambalpur, via video-conferencing.
Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik along with Union Ministers Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank', Dharmendra Pradhan and Pratap Chandra Sarangi will also be present on the occasion. The ceremony will be virtually attended by more than 5,000 invitees.
IIM Sambalpur is the first IIM to implement the concept of a flipped classroom where the basic concepts are learnt in digital mode and experiential learning takes place in the class through live projects from the industry.
The institute also outscored all other IIMs in terms of the highest gender diversity with 49 per cent girl students in the MBA batch of 2019-21 and 43 per cent in the 2020-22 MBA batch.
