PGIMER Chandigarh Launches India's 1st Amputee Clinic

The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has launched an amputee clinic.
The clinic has been set up to improve amputation patient care by providing collection of services under one roof and with significant coordination.
The Director said that its basic intent is to unify all diverse sections in the hospital with some upgrades where needed, to provide appropriate management to amputees to guide them in their path to rehabilitation in society.

NSDC Partners with CBSE to Launch First Edition of 'Junior Skills Championship 2021'

With an aim to enhance integration of technical and vocational education at the school-level, the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) has partnered with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to launch the first edition of Junior Skills Championship 2021. The registration process is open and candidates can apply till February 19 at the website- worldskillsindia.co.in/juniorSkills2021.
The event will be held virtually this year. "The championship will be promoted through nearly 21,000 CBSE-affiliated schools across the country, and will focus on students studying from classes 6 to 12."
The championship will have various activities over the next two months. It will include skill competitions for schools, career counselling webinars, digital seminars and panel discussions, online boot camps and roundtable conference of academicians and corporates. The final competition will be held in April.

Bihar Government Increases Scholarship Amount under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana

The Bihar government has increased its scholarship amount for girl students under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana. From this year, girls completing graduation will be provided Rs. 50,000 while those passing intermediate (class 12) would be getting a scholarship worth Rs. 25,000.
Earlier, graduate girls or those with an equivalent degree were provided Rs 25,000, while inter-pass girls received Rs 10,000.
The Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana has the potential to benefit 1.6 crore girls in the state by promoting education.
The Bihar State Cabinet has given its nod for the increase in the scholarship amount allocation for graduate and inter-pass girls under this scheme from the 2021-22 fiscal year.
This move was taken to cut down child marriages in the state and to ensure that girls get equal opportunities for higher education irrespective of their financial background.

Kerala to Gets its first Human Milk Bank

The southern state of Kerala will get its first human milk bank. The state-of-the-art facility will be inaugurated by Health Minister K. K. Shailaja at state-owned Ernakulam general hospital in Kochi.
The facility will provide breast milk to newborn babies who are deprived of it because of various issues, including the sickness of their mothers.
According to the state government, 3,600 babies are born in the general hospital a year and out of those, 600 to 1,000 sick babies are admitted into the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The hospital authorities said that all safety protocols and procedures for collecting, preserving and providing the breast milk to needy children will be ensured as per government guidelines. The collected milk can be stored up to 6 months safely in the bank.

New Zealand Approves Its First Coronavirus Vaccine

New Zealand's medical regulator has approved its first coronavirus vaccine, and officials hope to begin giving shots to border workers by the end of March.
New Zealand has no community transmission of the virus, and border workers are considered the most vulnerable because they deal with arriving travellers.

'Aatmanirbharta' named Oxford Hindi word of the year for 2020

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on Aatmanirbharta in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic, this particular word has been named by Oxford Languages as its Hindi Word of the Year 2020 as it "validated the day-to-day achievements of the countless Indians who dealt with and survived the perils of a pandemic".
Aatmanirbharta means self-reliance. The word was chosen by an advisory panel of language experts Kritika Agrawal, Poonam Nigam Sahay and Imogen Foxell.
The Oxford Hindi word of the year is a word or expression that is chosen to reflect the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the passing year, and have lasting potential as a term of cultural significance.

Ayesha Aziz Becomes India's Youngest Female Pilot

This 25-year-old woman from Kashmir is acting as a source of inspiration and a beacon of empowerment for numerous Kashmiri women after becoming the youngest female pilot in the country.
In 2011, Ayesha Aziz became the youngest student pilot to get a license at the age of 15 and underwent training to fly a MIG-29 jet at Russia's Sokol airbase the following year. She later graduated in aviation from the Bombay Flying Club (BFC) and obtained a commercial license in 2017.

IIT-Gandhinagar Develops Gaze Sensitive, Virtual Reality-based Social Interactive System for Indi...

The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGn), has developed a virtual reality-based system that can deliver individualised feedback based on the dynamic gaze patterns of individuals with autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder.
The system, 'Towards design of multi-user virtual reality-based interactive social communication platform for individuals with Autism and its implications on eye gaze', developed under Prof. Uttama Lahiri, an associate professor at electrical engineering department, works on eye-tracking measures that are considered to be very essential since individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are often distracted and have less attention span.

IIT-Bombay to Launch 16th Annual Entrepreneurship Fest- E-Summit 2021

With an aim to foster the spirit of self-reliance among youth and help them get exposure to entrepreneurship, E-Cell IIT-Bombay will launch the 16th edition of their annual entrepreneurship fest – 'E-Summit 2021: A Blizzard of Ingenuity'. Presented by Westbridge Capital and powered by IDFC bank, E-Summit is scheduled for February 6th-7th and will be held virtually due to the pandemic. The event comprises speaker sessions, workshops, competitions, hackathons, internship job fairs, etc.
The event will have "The Ten Minute A Million" or more popularly known as TTMM. Under the initiative, shortlisted startups will get a chance to make a 10-minute pitch in front of a panel of India's best angel investors, followed by an on-the-spot decision on financial backing. Selected startups have a chance to secure backing of Rs 20 lakh and beyond.

India's First 'Gender Park' in Kerala's Kozhikode

The Kerala government is all set to launch Rs 300 crore three-tower 'Gender Park' in Kozhikode. The park will become functional on the occasion of the second edition of the International Conference on Gender Equality (ICGE-II). The park will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, in between February 11-13 that will also mark the inauguration of the second edition of ICGE-II.
The gender park was established by the government of Kerala in 2013. It is an initiative that works towards gender equality and empowerment in Kerala. The headquartered for the initiative is in the capital of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram.
However, the main campus is at Silver Hills, Kozhikode. The campus has an area of 24-acre. The park has been set with its main focus on gender justice.
The platform will provide an environment for policy analysis, research, capacity development, advocacy, economic and social initiative. The park will be operational under the Department of Social Justice. This space is the first of its kind across the world.
