Rajasthan Launches Online Scholarship Portal for Class 1-12 Students

  • The Rajasthan government launched an online portal for students to digitally apply for scholarships. The portal will allow students to apply online for all scholarship for classes 1-12. Along with the portal, the education department also released an online annual work evaluation report module.

Goa First Rabies-free State

  • Goa has become the first Rabies-free state of India. According to Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, state has not reported a single rabies case in last three years.
  • Chief Minister highlighted; Goa has achieved 5,40,593 vaccinations against rabies in dogs.
  • State has also educated nearly a lakh people about dog bite prevention and has set up 24-hours rabies surveillance which comprise of an emergency hotline and rapid response team for dog bite victims.
  • Task of controlling rabies was being carried out by Mission Rabies project which is a central government grant.
  • Mission Rabies is a charity, initially founded as an initiative by Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS). It is a United Kingdom-based charity group which assists animals. Mission Rabies works with 'One Health approach' which is driven by research to eliminate dog bite transmitted rabies disease. It was launched in September 2013 with the objective of vaccinating 50,000 dogs against rabies in India. Rabies has estimated to kill 59,000 people annually. Mission Rabies teams have vaccinated 968,287 dogs since 2013. Organisation has worked in the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Goa, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Assam.

Punjab Govt. Urges Defence Ministry to Sanction Third Sainik School

  • The Punjab government has urged the Centre to sanction a third Sainik school for the state in Bathinda district. The first Sainik School is at Kapurthala and the second is to come up at Gurdaspur.
  • Punjab CM said that the state government has already allotted 40 acres of land at Dalla Gorian in Gurdaspur to establish Punjab's 2nd Sainik School and the MoA has also been signed and submitted to the department of ex-servicemen welfare in the Ministry of Defence. However, he said this shall not, in his opinion, suffice to meet the aspirations of the Punjabi youths.
  • Sainik School, Kapurthala is at present the only Sainik School in Punjab, established way back in 1961. The youths of Punjab have always displayed an exemplary zeal in joining the armed forces and serving the nation, he said, adding there is an urgent need to establish additional Sainik schools in the state.

IIT-Hyderabad to Offer New Online MTech and MDes Programmes

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad announced new seven online MTech programmes and an online MDes programme for working professionals starting from August 2021. The programmes are launched in view of the IIT Hyderabad's vision to impart wide knowledge to the students in science, technology, and liberal arts.
  • The online MTech/MDes programmes are being offered in various disciplines and streams by different departments of the institute. They are based on the credit system and offer a wide choice of courses to the students. Each programme has core and elective courses and project work.

NSDC And WhatsApp Launch "Digital Skill Champions Program"

  • The National Skill Development Corporation and WhatsApp announced an alliance to launch the Digital Skill Champions Program that aims to train India's youth on digital skills, in order to make them employment ready. The partnership identifies two broad areas of collaboration viz., WhatsApp Digital Skills Academy and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) and WhatsApp Business App Training sessions.
  • Through this program, school and university students would be coached to imbibe digital and online skills that would culminate with WhatsApp and NSDC awarding 'Digital Skill Champions' certification. The course is based on a module format, is comprehensive and intensive in imparting knowledge about important aspects of the online ecosystem, equipping students with technology-based learning on campuses across tier 3 and 4 towns and cities throughout the country.

IGNOU Introduces PG Programme in Urdu

  • Indira Gandhi National Open University's School of Humanities has launched a master programme in Urdu (MUD) through open distance learning mode. Interested students can apply through the admission portal of the university.
  • Candidates who want to apply for the programme should have a bachelor degree or a higher degree from a recognised university. The course is for two years duration. Good knowledge of reading comprehension and writing skill would be a prerequisite for this programme.
  • The programme exposes learners to a wide range of Urdu language and literature. It would be helpful in developing a sound understanding of Urdu literature and also other literature such as Arabic, Persian, English, and Hind.

World Bank Sanctions Funds for Andhra's SALT Programme

  • According to Education Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Adimulapu Suresh, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) has sanctioned funds of Rs. 1,860 crore to implementation of SALT programme.
  • SALT programme stands for "Supporting Andhra's Learning Transformation" programme. This programme was launched with the aim of improving learning outcomes, quality of teaching practices and school management in basic education. This aim would be achieved by transforming government schools into vibrant and competitive institutions.
  • Apart from improvement in basic education etc, the programme focuses on reforming curriculum, improving classroom practices, professional development of teachers and preparing students to be fit for global competitive by introducing English as medium of instruction across State-run educational institutions.

IIT Madras Launches 'Centre for Research on Start-Ups and Risk Financing'

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has launched a 'Centre for Research on Start-Ups and Risk Financing' (CREST) which will provide academic and thought leadership in innovation, entrepreneurship and risk capital.
  • CREST mission has been launched with the vision to be globally recognized as leading centre of research in the fields of creation, development, and financing of innovation, start-ups, and entrepreneurship. It also seeks to establish a system of cross-country collaborative research which will help in use of unique data sets on start-ups and venture capital. It will carry evidence synthesis on start-up & innovation ecosystem to inform policymakers and practitioners.

Delhi Sports University Appoints First VC

  • The Delhi government appointed former Olympic medalist weightlifter Karnam Malleswari as the first Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Sports University.
  • Malleswari is the first Indian woman weightlifter to bring home an Olympic medal. She created history at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 by lifting 110 kg and 130 kg in the 'snatch' and 'clean and jerk' categories.

IIM Bangalore Only Indian B-school in Top-100 QS Executive MBA Rankings

  • The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore continued to be the only Indian business school (B-school) in the top global 100 list in the latest 2021 edition of Executive MBA Rankings by global higher education consultancy QS Quacquarelli Symonds.
  • IIM Bangalore's PGPM ranked at 39, down from 36th position last year, followed by Indian School of Business (ISB)'s Post Graduate Programme in Management for Senior Executives (PGP MAX) in the 101-110 rank band and IIM Kozhikode's MBA Programme for Working Executives in the 151-plus band.
  • All three Indian B-schools fell from their previous year rankings. In the previous 2020 QS Executive MBA Rankings, ISB's PGP-MAX was ranked at 81 while IIM Kozhikode's programme was ranked in the 101+ band.

IBM, IISc Launch Innovation Lab

  • IBM and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), a premier academic research institution in India, launched the IBM-IISc Hybrid Cloud lab to advance research in hybrid cloud technologies and drive breakthrough innovations in this area.
  • Students and faculty across departments of the institute, which is located at the IISc campus in Bengaluru, will work alongside IBM Research scientists to conduct cutting-edge research that can help organisations leverage the true power of hybrid cloud by enabling faster, seamless, and more secure adoption of hybrid cloud & Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • The IBM-IISc Hybrid Cloud lab will bring together a talented community of scientists, faculty and students, who are passionate about solving some of the toughest research challenges that enterprises face today, in scaling the adoption of cloud computing across industries.
