IIT Bombay Hosts Conference of BRICS Network Universities 2021

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) is hosting a three day virtual "Conference of BRICS Network Universities". This conference is being held as a part of India's Chairmanship of the 13^th BRICS Summit in 2021. The basic objective of BRICS Network University is enhancing educational cooperation in general, and especially in the realm of research and innovation. The theme of the Conference of BRICS Network Universities is "Electric Mobility".
The event will see 18 experts from Brazil, Russia, India, China and S. Africa deliver keynotes on various aspects of electric mobility like traffic management, hydrogen technology, hybrid vehicles, lithium-ion batteries and linkage between e-mobility and livelihoods.
Around 100 students, researchers and faculty from the BRICS Network Universities of the five-member countries will participate in the conference.
The BRICS Network University is a union of higher education institutions of the five BRICS member countries. IIT Bombay is the lead institution of India for the BRICS Network University.

Innovation Ambassador Programme to Train Teachers

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has collaborated with All Indian Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to launch the innovation ambassador programme.
Under this, teachers from CBSE-affiliated schools will be trained on five modules – design thinking and innovation, idea generation and ideal hand-holding, intellectual property rights (IPRs), product/prototype development, finance, sales and HR.

CBSE Inks MoU with NCEAR for Skill Development in Schools

CBSE signed an MoU with the National Council of Applied Economic Research for a project on skill development in schools. NCEAR will undertake a research study in two phases to provide appropriate advice to implement skilling in schools in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020.
The MOU was signed in the presence of Anita Karwal, Secretary (School Education & Literacy), Praveen Kumar, Secretary (Skill Development and Entrepreneurship), and CBSE Chairman Manoj Ahuja.
This study will analyze inputs from CBSE, compare the existing teaching and learning patterns to identify the gaps and issues with the current programme being run in CBSE schools and will focus on learning outcomes, relevance of the skills and their impact on pathways to work and future education.

English Medium Made Compulsory in All Degree Colleges of Andhra Pradesh

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to make English medium compulsory across all government, private aided and unaided degree colleges across the state from the academic year 2021-22.
The Department of Higher Education of Andhra Pradesh strongly feels that the introduction of English medium education at the undergraduate (UG) level would enhance the career prospects of graduates.
According to the findings in India Skills Report of 2019, English figured among the top three skills, along with learning agility and adaptability, that employers look for in India.

Weyan Village in Bandipora, India's First to Inoculate all Adults

Weyan, a village in district Bandipora (J&K) has become the first village in the country, where the entire population above 18 years has been vaccinated. The vaccination in Weyan village was covered under the J&K model, a 10-point strategy to inoculate everyone who is eligible for the shots at a faster pace.
The Union territory also achieved 70 per cent vaccination for those in the 45+ age group despite the initial vaccine hesitancy, almost double the national average. The village is located only 28 kilometres away from Bandipora district headquarters, but a distance of 18 kilometres has to be covered by foot as there is no motorable road.

IIT Ropar Develops Nation's First Power-free CPAP Device 'Jivan Vayu'

Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar has developed a device 'Jivan Vayu' which can be used as a substitute of CPAP machine. This is the nation's first such device which functions even without electricity and is adapted to both kinds of oxygen generation units like O2 cylinders and oxygen pipelines in hospitals. These provisions are not available in otherwise existing CPAP machines.
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a treatment method for patients having breathing problems during sleep called sleep apnea. The machine uses mild air pressure to keep the airways open for easy breathing. It is also used to treat infants whose lungs have not fully developed. The machine blows air into the baby's nose to help inflate his or her lungs. The treatment is all the more necessary during early stages of the Covid-19 infection. It reduces lung damage and allow patients to recover from the inflammatory effects.

Amazon India Announces Machine Learning Programme

Amazon India announced the launch of an integrated learning programme for students to learn applied Machine Learning (ML) skills, making them industry ready for careers in the new technology.
The programme, ML Summer School, has been introduced to help train students in ML and address the growing demand for talent with this skill set across various industries.
The curriculum of ML Summer School will cover the fundamental concepts in ML while linking them to practical industry applications through an immersive 3-day course.
Students will get to learn first-hand on how advanced ML techniques such as Deep Learning and Probabilistic Graphical Models can be leveraged to solve specific business problems in the e-commerce domain such as demand forecasting, catalogue quality, product recommendations, search ranking and online advertising.

'Namaste Yoga' Mobile App Launched

'Namaste Yoga' a mobile application was launched in the curtain raiser event for the 7th International Day of Yoga. The event was organised by the Ministry of Ayush in association with the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga.
Speaking on the occasion, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said that yoga is a way to a healthy and happy life and the government strives to promote Yoga among all sections of society. Talking about the 'Namaste Yoga'mobile application, Ayush Minister Kiren Rijiju said that it has been designed as an information platform for the public.
Ayush Ministry said that it aims to raise awareness about yoga and make it accessible for the larger community. Ayush Ministry said that the event also marked the beginning of a 10-episode series on various aspects of Common Yoga Protocol which would be telecast on DD India. The series has been produced by Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga.

All India Survey on Higher Education 2019-2020

Ministry of Education has released latest edition of "All India Survey on Higher Education" (AISHE) 2019-2020. As per the survey, number of institutions of national importance has increased to 135 which accounts for 80 percent in last five years.
According to survey, number of institutions of national importance has increased to 135 in 2020 from 75 in 2015.
Gender parity Index has also improved.
Number of PhDs has increased by 60 per cent since 2015. Number of students pursuing PhD in 2019-20 was 2.03 lakh while in 2014-15 it was 1.17 lakh.
Number of teachers stands at 15,03,156. Out of them, 57.5 percent are male while 42.5 percent are female.
Total enrolment in higher education is 3.85 crore in 2019-20, which was 3.74 crore in 2018-19 & 3.42 crore in 2014-15.
AISHE report is published by Ministry of Education since 2010-11. Survey provides key performance indicators on current status of higher education in India. Data is collected on parameters like number of teachers, student enrolment, examination results, programmes, education finance and infrastructure.
