Health Minister Releases 'The State of the World's Children 2021' Report

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya released UNICEF's global flagship publication "The State of the World's Children 2021; On My Mind: promoting, protecting and caring for children's mental health in New Delhi. The report details the significant impact of COVID-19 pandemic on children's mental health.
This is very vital to address mental health as an important aspect for creating a healthy society. Mansukh noted that teachers are very important stakeholders for addressing mental health issues along with parents and family.
UNICEF India Representative Dr Yasmin Ali Haque presented some key findings of the report.
As per the report, around 14 per cent of 15 to 24-year-olds in India, or 1 in 7 of them, reported often feeling depressed or having little interest in doing things.

Centre Decides to Defer Change in NEET-SS Exam Pattern from 2022-23

In a relief to thousands of young doctors pursuing higher specialisation courses, the Centre told the Supreme Court that in the interest of students, it has decided to implement changes in the pattern of the NEET-Super Speciality (NEET-SS) examination from the academic year 2022-23.
The government indicated that it may defer the examination for the academic year 2021-22 by a couple of months as they have to start the process all over again.

State of the Education Report for India-2021

According to a UNESCO report, there are nearly 1.2 lakh single-teacher schools in the country, of which an overwhelming 89 per cent are in rural areas. The report projects that India needs 11.16 lakh additional teachers to meet the current shortfall.
The findings in the report, 'State of the Education Report for India-2021', focused on teachers, are largely based on analysis of Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) and the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) data.
Based on calculations of PLFS 2018-19 data, the report points out that across states there are 1,10,971 single-teacher schools, which translates to 7.15% of 11.51 lakh schools, employing 95 lakh teachers. "89 per cent of these single-teacher schools are in rural areas. States with a high percentage of single-teacher schools include Arunachal Pradesh (18.22 per cent), Goa (16.08 per cent), Telangana (15.71 per cent), Andhra Pradesh (14.4 per cent), Jharkhand (13.81 per cent), Uttarakhand (13.64 per cent), Madhya Pradesh ( 13.08 per cent), Rajasthan (10.08 per cent)," the report stated.

World's 1st Malaria Vaccine Recommended by WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended the widespread use of a malaria vaccine among children in Africa and other areas of high malaria transmission, a breakthrough in the long fight against the deadly disease.
The vaccine WHO has endorsed, called RTS, S, or Mosquirix, is more than 30 years in the making and works to prime the immune system against 'Plasmodium falciparum', the deadliest malaria parasite and the most common one in Africa.
According to WHO, it is the first vaccine to complete large-scale clinical trials and show that it can significantly reduce malaria, including life-threatening malaria, in young children in Africa.

IIT-Madras Launches Two Diploma Courses in Programming and Data Science

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras will be offering two diploma programmes in programming and data science. The courses would be delivered through a comprehensive learning delivery model that competes with a classroom learning experience. The courses include lecture videos, lecture-based activity questions, practice assignments, graded assignments, and mini-projects that reinforce problem-solving skills.
There will be live sessions with course instructors where questions from the learners are answered for every subject. The evaluation would be done through in-person quizzes and end-term examinations, ensuring that this programme meets with the same academic rigour as an on-campus programme.

Facebook Launches Creator Education Programme in India

Facebook launched the largest creator education and enablement programme in India.
This programme will provide an opportunity to content creators, on its platform and Instagram, to learn, earn and grow their communities.
While addressing the 2021 edition of 'Creator Day India', Instagram Head Adam Mosseri noted that India is one of the fastest growing markets for photo sharing and short video platform.
India has become the best place for creators to grow and make a living. So, Facebook has planned to do this by developing a range of creative tools in order to democratise expression. For instance, Reels is a great example of democratised creativity. On an average, more than 6 million Reels are produced in India per day.
Social media platform is also introducing monetisation tools in order to help creators earn through content.

No Teacher, No Class: State of the Education Report for India, 2021

The 'State of the Education Report for India 2021: No Teacher, No Class ' was launched by UNESCO New Delhi, with over 400 attendees, including representatives from the government, civil society, academia, partners and youth.
Published annually, this third edition of the State of Education Report of India, focused on the theme of teachers, teaching and teacher education, underscores that the work of teaching is complex. It attempts to provide an understanding of key aspects of the teaching profession, provides a profile of nearly 9.7 million teaching workforce, as well as the challenges of their intricate teaching routine and their professional development.
This publication is the annual flagship report of UNESCO New Delhi and it is based on extensive research.
The substance of the Report has been developed by an expert team of researchers in the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, under the guidance of the UNESCO New Delhi Office.

Centre Launches National Action Plan for Rabies Elimination by 2030

The Centre on the occasion of World Rabies Day launched a national action plan NAPRE for the elimination of dog mediated rabies by 2030.
Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Parshottam Rupala unveiled the National Action Plan for dog Mediated Rabies Elimination by 2030 (NAPRE).
The two Union ministers also launched the Joint Inter-Ministerial Declaration Support Statement for the elimination of dog mediated rabies from India by 2030 through the One Health Approach.

IIT-H Develops Alternative to Corneal Transplantation

Indian Institute of technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) developed a hydrogel from discarded corneas that can be used as an alternative to Corneal transplantation.
Research team was led by Dr. Falguni Pati, an Associate Professor at Department of Bio-medical Engineering at IIT-H.
Hydrogel was developed from discarded corneas of human and bovine sources using novel and simple method.
The team discovered the most significant feature of this tissue-specific hydrogel in order to prevent cells from scar tissue formation.
Tissue formation is attributed to micro-environment which cannot be offered by any synthetic or other natural material.
Hydrogel is capable of being injected because of its two phases viz., liquid and gel on the basis of incubation temperature.
Cornea is the transparent front part of the eye, covering iris, pupil, and anterior chamber. Cornea refracts light and accounts for about two-thirds of the eye's total optical power. Refractive power of the cornea is 43 dioptres in Humans. Cornea can be reshaped by surgical procedures like LASIK.
