Govt. Launches Phase-II of Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship

  • Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the second phase of Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship, a two-year programme to create opportunity for youth and enhance skilling at the grass root level.
  • The fellowship seeks to combine classroom sessions by academic partner IIMs with on-field exposure at the district level to create credible plans and identify barriers in raising employment, economic output, and promote livelihoods in rural areas.
  • Dharmendra Pradhan urged district collectors and academic partner IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) to facilitate the fellows and script a success story of change through this fellowship.

IIT Bombay Launches Certificate Courses in Digital Transformation and Power Electronics

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, in partnership with edtech platform Coursera, has launched two new certificate programmes — digital transformation and power electronics and motors for electric vehicles (EVs). These programmes will help learners gain technical, managerial, and leadership skills. Interested candidates can enroll in both programs until November 19, 2021. The classes will begin in November 2021.
  • Four-month-long digital transformation certification, with live lectures, is designed for non-IT managers leading digital transformation initiatives. The course teaches how to identify opportunities to transform the organisation through strategic implementation of new technologies and builds analytical skills to understand how to implement and execute the right solutions.

Life Expectancy in India Drops by 2 Years due to Covid

  • According to the scientists from a city-based International Institute for Population Studies (IIPS), Covid-19 pandemic has affected the lives of people across the world.
  • As per scientists, in India, covid-19 pandemic resulted in a drop in life expectancy by almost two years.
  • Report points out a drop in life expectancy at birth in men as well as women.
  • In the year 2019, life expectancy at birth was 69.5 years for men while 72 years for women. This is decreased to 67.5 years for men and 69.8 years for women in the year 2020.
  • The study also included a factor term called 'length of life inequality'.
  • As per study, Covid-19 claimed maximum lives of men among the people aged 39-69.
  • In the year 2020, the age group 35-79 observed excess deaths due to covid-19 as compared to normal year.

Haryana Announces Free Education Scheme

  • Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, announced a free education scheme in state, to boost the level of education in the state.
  • Scheme has been announced to those whose verified family income is lower than Rs. 1.80 lakh per annum.
  • This announcement was made by CM, while he was interacting with students who have cracked civil services exam-2020 and JEE advance exam-2021, during a felicitation programme held at Panchkula.
  • Announcement was made under Haryana's 'Super 100 Programme'.
  • Through this scheme, the state government seeks to ensure that no talented student, belonging to a poor family, loses a chance to go with his or her dreams.

West Bengal Adopts 3-tier Model of Skilling to Strengthen Technical Education

  • With a focus on experience-based education and hands-on training, the West Bengal government has adopted a three-tier model of skilling with vocational training centres at panchayats, ITI institutes at blocks and a polytechnic college at every sub-division of the state.
  • Technical Education and Skill Development Minister Humayun Kabir said his department is in the process of setting up at least one polytechnic institute in every sub-division of the state.
  • The government has identified 495 vocational training centres for upgrading and trying to converge technical education with the labour department to identify district-wise skill gaps.

Bangalore University Introduces 4-year BA/BSc Honours Course

  • With the implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP), Bangalore University said it is starting four-year Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Honours degree courses from the academic year 2021-22.
  • The courses are skill-based, choice-based and cross-disciplinary, trans-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary in nature that would provide the students the option of electives across the disciplines as per the objectives of the new NEP.

NCERT Launches One-year Diploma in Guidance and Counselling

  • The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) announced a one-year diploma course for the training of professionals in guidance and counselling.
  • The course will be a mixture of both distance and face-to-face modes. The course aims at enhancing the skills and competencies of teachers to promote the holistic development of students and handle their academic, socio-emotional, and ethical problems.
