PM Modi Lays Foundation of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the Major Dhyan Chand Sports University. As per reports, the university will be established at an estimated cost of Rs. 700 crore at the Salawa and Kaili villages of the Sardhana town in Meerut.
  • The sports university will have the capacity of training 1,080 sportspersons, including 540 women and 540 men.
  • Named after field hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, the sports university has been planned with all the modern, state-of-the-art sports infrastructure – including a synthetic hockey ground, football ground, separate grounds for basketball, volleyball, handball, and kabaddi.

Atal Innovation Rankings 2021

  • Ministry of Education's innovation cell released the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) 2021. ARIIA 2021 classifies participating institutions into two major categories; technical and non-technical.
  • In the technical ranking, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) was recognized as the Most Innovative Educational Institute in India. This is the third time that IIT Madras has secured the first rank. IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi were placed at the second and third ranks respectively.

PM Modi Launches Blockchain-based Digital Degrees at IIT Kanpur

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a system to award blockchain-based educational degrees in digital form to students. These digital degrees can be verified globally and are unforgeable, according to IIT Kanpur director.
  • The technology has been developed by the institute under the National Blockchain Project.
  • The blockchain system works on the principle of decentralisation. This means that the control is not in the hands of a central agency, but to a distributed network of nodes.
  • This will help in keeping the data safe even if any specific node is compromised.
  • Also, the information in a blockchain is recorded and stored sequentially along with an exact timestamp. The previous information can't be altered, only amended by adding a new block. This makes tampering with a transcript very hard.

Karnataka CM Announces Extension of 'Raitha Vidya Nidhi' Scheme

  • Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced extending 'Raitha Vidya Nidhi' scheme for class 8-9 girl students in view of the drop in their enrolment in rural areas.
  • A government order in this regard would be issued immediately.

Kerala Best State on Health Parameters

  • Kerala emerged as the top ranking state in terms of overall health performance among larger states, while Uttar Pradesh is the worst, according to the fourth Health Index launched by Niti Aayog. The fourth round of the Health Index took into account the period 2019-20 (reference year).
  • Tamil Nadu and Telangana emerged as the second and third best performers, respectively, on health parameters.
  • The report, however, added that Uttar Pradesh ranked at the top in terms of incremental performance by registering the highest incremental change from the base year (2018-19) to reference year (2019-20).
  • Among the smaller states, Mizoram emerged as the best performer in overall performance as well as incremental performance, while among UTs, Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir ranked among the bottom UTs in terms of overall performance but emerged as the leading performer in terms of incremental performance.
  • The report was prepared in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with technical assistance from the World Bank.

IIT Guwahati Launches School of Business

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati commenced its academic activities at the newly initiated School of Business and will soon be admitting the first batch of students at its flagship programme, namely, the Masters of Business Administration (MBA).
  • The admission process for the MBA programme will open in January 2022, and the first batch is expected to commence their studies from July 2022. The admission to the MBA programme will be in line with the admission process adopted by other IITs offering MBA programmes, with the requirement of opening this programme to prospective applicants who have qualified the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2021.

  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras launched the 'Surendra and Dorothie Shah Chair' for furthering cutting-edge research in the field of Civil Engineering materials. This assumes huge significance due to the immense amount of construction work undertaken every year in India, with the volumes and expenditures continually increasing.
  • Prof. Surendra P. Shah, one of the foremost global experts in engineering materials, particularly concrete and other cement-based construction, chose IIT Madras to set up the Institute Chair. He has led the development of new advanced materials, which have become world standards in these fields, and his work revolutionized the way modern concretes are used worldwide.
