IIT Madras Gets New Director as Bhaskar Ramamurthi Steps Down
IT Madras is set to have a new director as Director Bhaskar Ramamurthi is stepping down as the director of the esteemed institution after completing two terms. Director Bhaskar Ramamurthi will be succeeded by V. Kamakoti, who is currently in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at IIT Madras.
An Alumnus of IIT Madras, Prof. Kamakoti is currently the Associate Dean for Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (ICSR), IIT Madras. He is also a member of the National Security Advisory Board, Government of India.
He designed India's first Indigenously-developed Microprocessor 'SHAKTI.'

Four IITs Get New Directos, Including Delhi
The government appointed new directors to the Indian Institutes of Technology in Delhi, Madras, Indore and Mandi.
Prof Rangan Banerjee of IIT Bombay was appointed as the next director of IIT Delhi, while Prof V Kamakoti of IIT Madras was elevated as director of the same institute. Prof Laxmidhar Behera of IIT Kanpur and Prof Suhas Joshi of IIT Bombay were appointed as directors of IIT Mandi and IIT Indore, respectively.
The outgoing directors of IIT Delhi and IIT Madras – Prof Ramgopal Rao and Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi – were serving on extension, with their five-year tenures having ended in April 2021. IIT Mandi and IIT Indore were being led by acting directors Prof Ajit Kumar and Prof Neelesh Kumar Jain, respectively.
Man gets Genetically-modified Pig Heart in World-first Transplant
A US man became the first person in the world to get a heart transplant from a genetically-modified pig.
David Bennett is doing well after the experimental seven-hour procedure in Baltimore.
The transplant was considered the last hope of saving Mr. Bennett's life, though it is not yet clear what his long-term chances of survival are.
It was either die or do this transplant," Mr Bennett explained a day before the surgery.
Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center were granted a special dispensation by the US medical regulator to carry out the procedure, on the basis that Mr. Bennett - who has terminal heart disease - would otherwise have died.

Hundred New Sainik Schools to Provide Opportunity to Girl Students to Join Armed Forces
According to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the government's decision to set up 100 new Sainik schools will provide an opportunity for girl students to join the armed forces and contribute to national security.
Singh said that the government is for increasing the role of women in the armed forces and a series of steps have been taken in that direction, including clearing the way for their admission in Sainik schools and providing permanent commission to women officers.
The defence minister exuded confidence that the decision to establish new Sainik schools will encourage girls to realise their dreams of serving the country.

Modi Inaugurates Second Campus of Kolkata's Cancer Institute
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the second campus of the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in Kolkata. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attended the inauguration virtually.
The new campus is equipped with modern facilities such as nuclear medicine (PET), 3.0 Tesla MRI, 128 slice CT scanner, Radionuclide therapy unit, endoscopy suite, and modern brachytherapy units among others.

Professor Pradeep Kumar Mishra is New VC of AKTU
Prof. Pradeep Kumar Mishra, vice chancellor (VC) at Jharkhand University of Technology, Ranchi, was appointed the new VC of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), Lucknow. He will replace Prof. Vineet Kansal who was given the additional charge of vice chancellor in August last year.
Mishra was appointed VC for three years from the day he assumes office.
