IIT-Kanpur Launches Departments of Design, Space Science and Astronomy

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur approved setting up two new departments in the fields of Design, Space Science and Astronomy, making the total tally to 20 academic departments.
  • The institute's design programme that has been in existence since 2002 will be transformed into the Department of Design. The institute is also planning to launch a Bachelor of Design programme starting as early as 2023.
  • The Design Department will be headed by Professor Nachiketa Tiwari, the current Head of the Design Programme.

The Citizen Constitution Literacy Campaign

  • The Citizen Constitution Literacy Campaign campaign was launched in Kollam district of Kerala. The campaign is first of its kind. The campaign would educate the residents of the district about the basics of constitution. The campaign aims to make Kollam district a constitutionally literate district.
  • The campaign aims to educate seven lakh Kollam residents. It is organized by the Kerala Institute of Local Administration and District Planning Committee. The campaign would brief the preamble of the Indian Constitution, fundamental rights, history of Indian constitution and legal remedies. All the citizens above the age of ten are to be briefed about the constitution. This includes socio – cultural organizations, private establishments, government institutions, educational institutions.

Indian-origin Professor Appointed Oxford University Business School Dean

  • The University of Oxford was appointed Indian-origin academic Professor Soumitra Dutta as the new Dean of its Sad Business School.
  • Professor Dutta, currently Professor of Management at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University in New York, will take up his new UK post on June 1 this year.
  • Professor Dutta also serves on the boards of listed international corporations, has founded several successful start-ups, co-chaired the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council on Innovation Ecosystems and created major global technology and innovation indices.

Raghuvendra Tanwar is Chairman of ICHR

  • Professor emeritus, Kurukshetra University, Raghuvendra Tanwar was appointed as chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR). Tanwar appointment is for a period of three years from the day he assumes the office of the Chairman of the Council or until further order. Tanwar, who joined Kurukshetra University as a lecturer in August 1977, has an outstanding academic record, with two gold medals in MA History.
  • The primary aim and objective of the Indian Council of Historical Research is to promote and give directions to historical research and to encourage and foster objective and scientific writing of history. Enhancing the academic standard of the output of ICHR activities has been the foremost objective in it's agenda.

Kailash Satyarthi and Dr. Jeffrey Sachs Receive Honorary Doctorates from Amrita University

  • Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University) recognized as the fifth-best university in India as per the 2021 NIRF rankings conferred its first honorary doctorates on Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel Peace Laureate, and Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, Global Economist for Sustainable Development.
  • A virtual ceremony was held for the event that was graced by the presence of the well-known humanitarian and spiritual leader, Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma), the Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham.
  • Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Environment, Forest and Climate Change, graced the ceremony via video conference.

LEAD Becomes First Edtech Unicorn of 2022

  • Mumbai-based start-up LEAD became the first edtech company to enter the unicorn club this year. The edtech start-up has raised $100 million in its Series E funding at a valuation of $1.1 billion.The round was led by Westbridge Capital while GSV Ventures also participated.
  • The company focusses on improving a student's school education experience rather than serving as a supplement to schooling like most other edtech start-ups. LEAD says it will enter Academic Year 22-23 with 5,000 schools across more than 500 cities in India with an annual revenue run-rate of $80 million – and reach 2 million students.

IIM-Lucknow Launches Advanced Management Program in Financial Services and Capital Markets

  • To strengthen professionals' skill sets and understanding of financial services, IIM Lucknow and Imarticus Learning launched an advanced management program in financial services and capital markets.
  • Designed by academicians at IIM Lucknow, the program will provide mid-level management professionals with in-depth domain exposure in corporate finance, valuation and modelling, equity research, investment banking, risk management, corporate banking, digital banking, treasury operations, and finTech.
  • The program will cover key aspects of financial services and capital markets. Each of the course modules will have live virtual teaching and learners will also be given access to the campus immersion at IIM Lucknow twice – once at the beginning, and once at the end of the program.

Edtech Firms Form Self-regulatory Body

  • Leading companies operating in the education technology space have formed a consortium – India EdTech Consortium (IEC) – which would adhere to a common "code of conduct".
  • Companies and start-ups such as Byju's, Careers 360, Great Learning, Harappa, Times Edutech & Events Ltd, Scalar, Simplilearn, Toppr, Unacademy, upGrad, Vedantu and WhiteHat Jr have joined the IEC as of now.
  • The consortium members will adhere to a common 'code of conduct' and institute a two-tier grievance redressal mechanism to protect the rights of the learners.
