Swedish Author Dies At The Age Of 85

  • One of Sweden's best-known authors, Per Olov Enquist, has died aged 85.
  • His career spanned more than half a century, and his work won acclaim not just in his native country but across Europe, especially France and Germany.
  • Enquist's plays and novels - described as pessimistic in their outlook - often deal with questions of truth, and the blurred lines between fact and fiction.The film Pelle the Conqueror, whose screenplay he helped write, won an Oscar for best foreign-language film.

Former IAS officer Sanjay Kothari takes oath as CVC

  •  Retired IAS officer Sanjay Kothari, who was secretary to President Ram Nath Kovind, took oath as the new Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC).
  • Kothari, an officer from the 1978 batch from Haryana, was named as new CVC by a high powered committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February, 2020. In the same meeting, ex-Broadcasting Secretary Bimal Julka was appointed as the next Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).

Eminent theatre actor Usha Ganguly passes away at 75

  • Eminent theatre personality Usha Ganguly died at her residence in south Kolkata.
  • She founded the Rangakarmee group in 1976, which is known for non-conformist productions like 'Mahabhoj','Rudali', 'Court Martial' and 'Antaryatra'.
  • Her Rangakarmee gave a separate idiom, a new language to theatre in Bengal and created a new audience, which had so far been familiar with Bengali group theatre and English theatre, in the late 70s and 80s.

BWF names PV Sindhu As An Ambassador For Awareness Campaign

  • World Champion P V Sindhu was unveiled as one of the ambassadors for Badminton World Federation (BWF)'s 'i am badminton' awareness campaign.
  • The campaign provides a platform for players to express their love and respect for badminton by advocating and committing to clean and honest play.
  • Sindhu, an Olympic silver medallist, said playing clean and honest is very important in any sport.

N Kamakodi reappointed as MD and CEO of City Union Bank

  • Private sector lender City Union Bank reappointed N Kamakodi as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bank. The appointment was approved by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 20 April, 2020. Kamakodi's reappointment is for a further period of three years with effect. The reappointment will be effective from 1 May 2020.
  • Kamakodi has been associated with the City Union Bank since 2003. He was elevated as MD and CEO in 2011.

HSBC Appoints Noel Quinn as Permanent CEO

  • HSBC Holdings PLC has appointed Noel Quinn—a stalwart of the British bank—as chief executive seven months after he assumed the position on an interim basis.
  • Mr. Quinn has been with HSBC for more than 30 years. His appointment removes one element of uncertainty about Europe's largest bank as it deals with the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, which has triggered the worst financial crisis in more than a decade.

Former Fiji Prime Minister Qarase Dies

  • Former Fiji prime minister Laisenia Qarase, who was installed as leader following one coup attempt and overthrown by another, died aged 79.
  • The founder of the Soqosoqo Duavata Ni Lewenivanua Party, who served as Fiji's sixth prime minister from 2000 to 2006, died in hospital after a short illness.
